I can testify to the durability of this lens. I was near the top of a mountain shooting with a longer lens and chatting with other hikers. I decided to go inside a cave and snatched up my backpack only to see my 18-149 roll out and start its journey down the slope. (They roll really fast!). Because of the incline I couldn’t run after it. It finally came to a stop and because it bounced off a few rocks, I expected the worse. Both caps had stayed on, but it was covered with dust. I used my blower on the outside, then wiped it off with a cloth before removing the caps to check the glass. Everything was fine. I couldn’t even find a scratch on it. I snapped it onto my camera and it worked perfectly. Nikon built one tough lens. And I am going to check the zippers on my pack after every chat with fellow hikers.

Did you use the kit lens 16-50mm for Z50? If yes, do you think you "lost" a little bit the wide angle 16mm versus 18mm? Or in practice and reality it is ok replacing the 16-50 by 18-140?

@@ionutvladI am not impressed with the build quality of the 16-50. It seems fragile. I would take it on a day trip, but not on a vacation. The 18-140 is much more versatile anyway. I would take the 50-250 only for wildlife.

My 18-140 will come home today for the Z50. Pretty excited to check it out. I have a Z6 and 24-200 as well, but Z50 combination is for backpacking and ease of carrying.

Completely agree with this video. I love my 70-200 2.8 and will some day get the 24-70 2.8 but I have the 24-200 as an all day walk around lens. It wouldn't make sense for me to add the 18-140 on top but these "smaller, cheaper" lenses are sensational and, for me, demonstrates the power of the z-mount. In the really expensive lenses we are yet to see significantly better glass than the competitors (though every single z lens seems amazing) but at the lower end - 1.8's, these travel zooms etc I don't think there is competition lenses on par!

Good to see some people are getting these now. I ordered one days after I saw the Nikon announcement for them. About 3 1/2 weeks ago. I have a Z50 and just took delivery of a Zfc. I’m very happy with both and can’t wait to try this lens on them. Though I think the Zfc will need that grip extension to help handle the extra weight of the lens. Fortunately I have one of those on order too. Antici…..pation.

That's a great lens for the DX line. I have the z24-200 as my walk around 'don't know what I'll shoot so I need the full range' lens and it's pretty amazing. My big question is whether you have heard any news on when the new 24-120 and 100-400 will start shipping out? I've heard end of year, but then something in Nikon Rumors said Feb 2022. I hope the former, but who knows. Those two complete my set with the 14-30mm and a couple of amazing primes. As usual, thanks for keeping everyone abreast of the best and brightest in the camera world.

Hi Matt As a welder fabricator, the concern I have with plastic mounts is on occasions when your rushing and don’t line up the bayonet mount properly when attaching it, plastic will be damaged very much easier Also if you change lenses frequently, the fine tolerances will wear much more quickly You mention plastics are used in many high tech applications, but where there are surfaces are in constant use or subject to wear they will always use metal against metal to ensure long term accuracy in tolerances

Yep all fair points Ronald ... and I think if composite mounts become an issue for the end user they should certainly expect Nikon to make good. I will dive in this subject more and see if I can find more.

Nikon is building these composite mounts for many years and we haven't seen a single shitstorm of users complaining about these mounts. This is a strong and durable material. They don't want to risk loosing customers for such issues.

Hi Matt! I really like your idea of putting DX lenses on the Z7 and realizing that even with the crop factor you’ve got almost 20 megapixels worth of image. Completely different story with the Z6 since you only have 25 megapixels to start with. I’m still undecided about whether to get the Z6 or Z7 because according to the specs, the Z7 seems to have similar low my performance to my Z 50 and the main reason I wanted to get full frame was mainly for better low light performance. Where is the Z6 seems to offer much more, as well as dynamic range. Specs say: Z50 -2.0 EV with low-light -4.0 EV Z7 -2.0 EV with low-light -4.0 EV Z6 -3.5 EV with low-light -6.0 EV Z6II -4.5 EV with low-light -6.0 EV Does your real world experience bear this out about these three cameras?

Are you happy with the colors in Capture One? I used Capture One with my Fuji and was very happy, then I switched to Nikon and found that the colors don't look very good and Lightroom colors are soooo much better. Could you tell us your basic settings in Capture One if you had changed something?

I USE MY 24-200 always on my Z 6. when needed i replace with Z 14-30 (for wide..) or Z 50 1.8 or 85 1.8 for portrait or dark situations but always pout back my 24-200 it is not the sharp one and not the best but it's cheap and light then the 70-200 F2.8 waiting Z 100-400 to replace my F 200-500.

I will say it is stupendously light. 315 grams, that's nothing. I do think 16mm would be nicer than 18 at the wide end though. Also I think there are composites and composites. The term itself only means it's created from 2 (or possibly more) materials. I don't think this is the same material as a composite on an airliner or a space ship. It doesn't mean it's bad though. Images look very good, and that's the most important.

Hey Matt, first let me say enjoy your vacation with your family. It would be nice to compare this lens with the kits lenses that come with the Z50. But really like the images you took with the Z7. You should also use the lens on the Z50 or Z fc

We need to compare the z50 plus the 18-140 (800g, 1400€) with the z5 plus the 24-200 (1400g, 1800€). While the second option has higher IQ, the Z50 sounds like a very attractive combination for travelers, good enough for most. I think, Nikon has done a great job here. Then there is always the option to upgrade to the Z7.

The Z5 offers better IQ most of the time. It just feels a bit limited if you've use ANY other Z side-by-side. It has the lowest EV sensitivity, stumbles in medium indoor lighting, and has some hardware limitations firmware cannot address. I tried three copies, and the last time was after the latest fw update. If you're not one to notice minor differences, or have a more relaxed/patient shooting style, you'll be happier with the Z5. The 24-200VR is better on the wide end, and the 24-120F4S is sharper but lacks VR. I'd hold off to see if the 2yo Z50 gets the Zfc firmware improvements, or a Z50II is announced. No rumors on either yet though.

Pairing the lens with the Z7 is a neat idea. I’m on the cusp of trading my D7200 for the Z50, but there are Z7 available pre used at the right price. I’ve a collection of Nikon 1 gear that I keep handy when travelling.

Hey, I would like to know how this lens compares to the DX 50-250 mm optically because I'm considering one of them in combination with the upcoming wideangle 12-28 as my travel setup to go with my Z fc and I can see that this lens is significantly more expensive so I'd like to know if it's significantly better. I plan to get the 12-28 once it comes out for landscape/travel and vlogging and I'd like to get a lens with more reach to go with it. If the 50-250 isn't significantly worse, then it would make more sense not to worry about the mid focal lengths and get the 50-250 because it has more reach (it would make more sense in a zoo or for some semi-wildlife shooting). What do you think?

Hey Josef, go with your gut and do the 12-28 and 50-250. The 18-140 duplicates a lot of each lens making it more suited to a single lens kit. The 28-50 (42-75)mm gap won’t really be an issue.

@@samo81 Yes, that's what I'm thinking but if the 18-140 is optically significantly better than the 50-250, it would still make sense to pick that. I haven't seen a comparison between the two in terms of optical performance.

The compsite material of my 16-50mm doesn't look so well after changing it over several months. I would like to have the Nikon 18-140mm, but not for that price with these materials. I hope Viltrox will start to make zoom lenses one day. Their AF lenses are impressive and you don't have to worry that something is worn out after some time.

Nice review and yep wouldn't be for me on the Z5 as Dx lenses end up 10mp I believe? Find my 24-200 outstanding performer that I luckily got on sale for $700 usd on Nikon sale. But great and needed addition for the Dx Z50. And I still think like many that Z lenses are around 20% overly priced. And waited till now to pickup my 50mm f1.8 S for $500 usd as $100 off Nikon lenses sale. But hay that is what is available as no competition. And still wondering and can't figure out why Tamron or Sigma haven't jumped on the Z bandwagon yet?

The metal mounts look better. Viltrox uses a metal mount, so I don’t think it saves much in costs. The 18-140 DX has metal mount. My 35mm DX f lens has metal mount. My 18-105 has plastic composite and it’s worn out.

You can't really compare aerospace composites with the plastic they use on cheap lenses that being said polycarbonate is plenty tough for something like a camera lens or body.

A great zoom range for video. Pity the full frame Z cameras switch to crop mode on a DX camera. I'm not fond of DX lenses - plastic mount variable aperture and a cheap AF motor.

I’ve been a Nikon user since forever but I absolutely hate the plastic mount. Pride of ownership is gone with a janky plastic mount lens. If third party lens makers including the newer players like Viltrox can produce lenses with proper metal mounts, so can Nikon. No lens costing over $600, let alone over $200 should have a cheap plastic mount. Even the $100 50mm f/1.8 AF-D has a metal mount so the whole “keep the cost down” is bull shit. Nikon is using its loyal following of DX shooters to shave pennies for shareholders. And as much as I want to buy a Z50, this plastic nonsense is going to push me straight to a Fujifilm camera.
