I'm considering this lens for a lightweight long lens for long shots when hiking in the mountains but the image quality at 200-400mm (effectively being a 200-400 f8 for hiking) needs to be good enough on a Z8/9 for large printing. The 24-200 is a little soft at 200mm, not so great. Would you say the 28-400 @400 has the same or better/worse image quality than the 24-200 @200? Thanks in advance..

According to tests conducted by my friends and me in Taiwan, the 28-400 is better, but of course, that's just our feeling. If you can visit a Nikon showroom near you to try it out, you should be satisfied. Apart from the aperture, there's nothing else to worry about with this lens.

@@Philipfung Thanks so much for the reply. I'm in Vietnam so will see if Nikon here have a copy, they often don't here. Sounds quite good though. I have a lot of Z lenses but need a reasonable quality long reach, light weight one for the mountains. I don't mind F8 for landscape. Thanks again.
I think this lens is very good for leisure travel photography 1 lens it can cover everything. Is a good to hv in the bag where one is limited with size and weight
Good Job Philip. I wonder how is it compared to 24-200mm?

thanks🥰The image quality is surprisingly good, actually. Personally, I feel like it's slightly better than the 24-200. The color contrast is better than the 24-200 as well. I'm not sure why this is the case 🙈, but some friends in Taiwan who have tried it also feel the same way.
