I just got my z6. Couldn’t be happier. I had a Sony A73 before. The difference for me is night and day. The newer z6ii has benefits for pros but the single card works for me.

Phenomenal camera for sure! I am totally happy with the first iteration of the Z6 also but they’re pushing 300k shutter actuations so it’s definitely time to upgrade. Thanks for watching!

@@raksh9 I had the a9 and the Z7, concurrently, for a while. I spent a month in SE Asia last year with the a9. When carrying the camera in my hand, the a9's grip irritated my middle finger at the first joint. I checked out the A7 IV at the camera store when it was released: that was better but still not as comfortable as the Z7. The a9's autofocus was fast, no doubt, but even on the original firmware, Nikon's wasn't as bad as was made out. You had to learn how to use it, as MM pointed out (and which few other "reviewers" did): apparently, Nikon were guarding some proprietary tech at the expense of telling users how to work the darn cameras. I wasn't all that impressed with eye autofocus in either camera: it doesn't focus on the eye, but on an area of high contrast near the eye. That means it may lock onto a cheekbone or the bridge of the nose or the brow arch, and now you're fighting with the camera. I much preferred the a9's controls to the soccer-mom interface Nikon chose for the Z series. OTOH, I much preferred Nikon's colors to Sony's. Knowing that I enjoy macro photography, the salesman loaned me his personal 105mm Micro-Nikkor (which also is one of my favorite portrait lenses) to try with the FTZ: it worked brilliantly. Oh, and how did I come to own a Z7? The a9 showed increasingly erratic behavior after I returned to the US, including corrupting BOTH cards simultaneously, before dying entirely (I didn't lose anything important, just some test shots made while experimenting with lighting setups). Probably the humidity got to it: I subsequently met a young couple who had been in Vietnam at the same time my family and I were, and their Canon also died shortly after they returned. Nikon had such a deal going on the Z-series, in kits which included the kit lens and the FTZ adapter, that I considered it a cheap rental while the a9 was off for warranty repair. I figured I'd sell whichever one I liked least. I traded the a9, because of the discomfort issue, for a surplus Leica factory demonstrator M10 ("Betriebskamera") and a 1979-manufactured Leitz Canada 50mm f/2 Summicron-M. I LOVE this combo, while I never really bonded with the various other digital systems (I'm an old film shooter, from before Canon introduced the world to AF). The Leica goes with me everywhere: I wish I'd had it in Asia last year, which is not a knock on Sony. I later sold the Z7 as a strategic move: I doubted Nikon's commitment and resale value was still high. I figured I'd buy back in if Nikon introduced a version 2. However, I have moved to Canon (a used 5D MkIII) because I now need tilt-shift lenses.

@@darylnd Thanks for describing some very interesting experiences. The only thing putting me off the Z6 is the use of XQD cards, which would cost a lot to build up to the usual five or six I'd use in a work day for video and stills. I've held a Z6 and it sits very nicely, same size as the Panasonic G9 I use. I've got a M9 which I shoot with a Summicron 50 v5 and asph Elmarit 28, so I know very well the feeling you would have for the M10.

Solid advice! I bought my z6 almost a year ago, and I love it! I love the camera, the images and the files. I'm amazed by it's ability to focus in low light. And, the dynamic range is crazy good. The new z6ii is super tempty, but I'd rather have the 70-200 S for the money. For me, you've re-affirmed that glass is the way to go right now, so thank you for another great vid! I'm still looking forward to your review of the z6ii though!

I have the tamron glass and some other lenses.. I own two Z6 cameras, battery packs, 70-200 f2.8, 24-70 f2.8 & 85mm f1.8, I shoot weddings, yeah with one card slot, completely confident, absolutely no problems. I use eye detect and tracking options all the time don't really miss any frame which is out of focus. The files are great, colours, quality, etc. Loads of great systems out there, Canon, Sony, etc doing a brilliant job....and? I get great results and my clients are very happy. No need to upgrade to this new tweaked range of cameras, the Z6 still does a brilliant job for me and I am not worried about any price drop in resale as I am too busy taking photographs with my existing kit. I will be happy to wait another two years for the Z9

I was watching the release here at midnight in NY and thinking I can't wait to see what Will is gonna have to say about this and as I figured, you'd be excited. Exactly my point about the mount. This is the very same and main reason I invested in this system. Mounts are generational. Software issues like AF can always be upgraded via firmware. Great video man and I'll look forward to your coming videos. its been too long brother. Good to see you back.

Good video, I got a few interesting remarks about the mark 2 line in addition: 1. The old battery grip works as well with both the new cameras, which is great. 2. Alot of people complain about the fact that the second card is SD card not a XQD or a CF express, thats a plus imo and afaik it doesnt even slow anything down in a way that matters, especially when theres a bigger buffer, and now if you dont have a XQD card reader with you, you can just view from the SD card, which is just great. 3. One possible problem im seeing is that the new bodies are not the same size actually. Theyre thicker, and the viewfinder hasnt been made to stick out more to compensate, so some people might have problems with the nose when shooting using the viewfinder, but Ill have to get my hands on one to find out about this for me personally. And Im super excited to see how the focus has been improved with the two processors as well!

I LOVE my Z6. I have not touched my D850 and D500 since I got my Z6 when it was released. I shoot mainly Boudoir and weddings. I ordered my Z6ii yesterday for the 2 card slots for my weddings. Completely agree. Also have two Z6 cameras which I use for weddings. Originally I bought one when it first came out as a backup for my D810 - since using it the Z6 has barely left my hand making the D810 pretty much redundant. Video capability is awesome, especially with the silent new Z mount glass and it is so much better than the D810 in low light situations with noise creeping in only at extremely high ISO. I loved the Z6 so much I bought a second and then COVID-19 hit. I will trade one in and get the Z6II purely for the charging whilst in use, dual processors and battery grip. All the best. Keep up the great content! Additionally, personally never had a card go on this camera either.

As a wedding photographer I like that they went with the second slot as a SD. Not because I’m afraid of failure but because I also second shoot. Now at the end of the day I can hand the primary my SD card(s) and not worry about transferring files and so forth. They can get the cards back to me whenever, not nearly as valuable as a XQD.

I had today the possibility to have my hands on the Z6II, The focus I tried with the 70-200 S, 100 1.4, 85 1.4, 24-70 S 2.8, . I think I stay with my Z6. The Firmware need to be improve for the F mount lenses, The 70-200 2.8 S was on Single focus point nearly the same indoor. I don't need eye focus, I can take pictures and I am not a beginner. With the 105 1.4, The Z6 was better than the Z6ii !!!! So please take your lens to the shop and try it out. Don't by per internet until you have tested the camera.

ARTICULATING SCREEN! Assign more buttons to whatever you want. Playback button on the right. Two dedicated dials (should match other Nikon pro models D300S layout was my favorite of all by far.) Be able to change modes electronically, would also allow more user modes, and user modes should save ALL settings (picture control and release aren't!) PSAM should at least remember last settings; with the option to have them static/default/reset.

You sounded very excited about the new Nikon Z6II. I am now waiting for mine to come. I stopped shooting Nikon DSLR's about 5 years ago and moved to the lighter and smaller Micro 4/3rds Panasonic Lumix cameras and lenses. My oinly dissapointment has been the quickness and accuracy of the Panasonic Lumix Auto Focus System. I do not shoot weddings, I do mostly street photography, wildlife, and scenery. I never sold my Nikon glass, just my older DSLR's and I kept my D810 and D750. I am looking forward to the Z6II with the lens adapter to really get confortable with the new Z6II. It will come with the 24-70 F4, which will be a good lens for me to get comfortable with the new camera for street photography. I enjoyed your "enthusiasm" for the Z6, and your positive outlook for the new Z6II. I hope to hear more infomration from you, as you use and familiarize more with the new Z6II plus the other lenses with the Z mount you use. Thanks!

If I haven’t commented before (I too had to switch my focus back on my IT work due to the Plandemic shutdown) ANYONE figure out a better way to work with Z6/Ninja V/FCPX??? Last I tried was using the Sony profile in FCPX (since Apple doesn’t look to be adding Nikon) but it was still like Color Grading from scratch w/o consistent results from shoot to shoot... I did try the NLog LUT that Nikon put out there but it only gets me close to the Sony Profile with the same shoot to shoot inconsistencies ie even slight changes to the lighting setup will throw the exposure off so I can apply a successful Color Grading from one shot to the next!?!?

Hi great video! Before the z6ii was released, I was about yo buy the sony a7iii. Have you installed the latest firmware to your Nikon Z? When you read the release notes, it advises to update Nikon Capture NX-D and View NX-i. THIS IS VERY FUNDAMENTAL The release update does not tell me the way my camera registers an image (controls the sensor, or interprets sensor data, or both) has changed. But if I need a new version of an application that processes raw images, then I must conclude that this is exactly what happened. On another level it also means there may be better insight in how to process my images from previous releases of firmware. I cannot change the old raw files, but I can change how they are processed today with a new version. While Nikon points this out, we have to wait and see how Adobe (Camera Raw) and Phase One (Capture One) will deal with this, and when. We can only guess here. And other applications that can open our raw files may have to adapt their raw processing engines as well. Or they don't and we don't get the best results possible. I mentioned in some of my YT comments that my Z 7 raw processing in Adobe suffers from color processing noise that is not present with some FTZ adapted F lenses on the 7, nor is such noise present in the raw processing from other apps (that do not formally support my Z lenses). And, Nikon Capture does a pretty good job in not generating processing noise but it sparkles less. So a new release of firmware to fix a couple minor issues - very fundamental. BTW, on my country's Nikon update website the 7 firmware update mentions a Capture (Windows) version to go to, but a newer sub-version already exists (go to the newest or you have to update twice). The Nikon Camera company can be a sphinx or oracle of Delphi - we need wizardry to understand what they are saying and might understand it all wrong. And here I am convinced I got it right.

A BIG CONCERN of the series II release is that Nikon might stop updating series I firmware now. Before the world got wind of II, before people thought it might be "S" instead, Nikon committed to continuing to improve their firmware. The improvements, for the most part, constituted improvements that were needed to make the competitive lag with other brands smaller. The optical quality was there, the hardware and chips. Just the firmware needed much improvement. And Nikon made big strides there. Version 1 was a disaster IMO, but when version 2 was released, I was confident enough to migrate from "D" SLR to "Z" ML with my use cases in mind. Now the II series have a reworked AF settings bundle of UI that is in a logical place together. Let me break "camera firmware" down into what might be its "architecture" so as to clarify my point coming after that. Note first that the word "firmware" is generally used for software components that are in persistent storage in hardware so as to define their workings - note that a spinning old-fashioned hard drive has firmware in its onboard chipset that actually implements a small single board computer. Way back, I used IBM hard drives for data center application in my desktop workstation (*) - it made a lot of noise in a calibration task it ran every so often and in a desktop workstation this sounded alarming and annoying. When IBM learnt about this problem, they changed the firmware and the drive became silent - but its interface to the computer, the computer's driver and the computer's operating system were still at the same protocol version level. We can compare the camera's firmware as a bundle of different software layers like: (a) operating system with a hardware abstraction layer (HAL) with (b) "drivers" to bridge the gap from the HAL bottom end of the operating system to the (c) "devices" (chips on the motherboard) and below that (d) the deepest level of firmware that these chips have onboard to define their work (as a way to extend the driver layer to the real things to be done). On top of this all we would see the "applications" that do different tasks, like (e) controlling the measuring of light in the sensor and collecting the data thereof, (f) saving the raw data from the buffer to the raw file, (g) compressing raw data in a couple steps so as to get (g1) eVF imagery, (g2) rear display imagery and siphon off in this (g) chain to get proper (g3) JPEG images that, (h) can also be saved to card. On top of this all we should have the (ui) UI that controls all these elements by setting the parameters they use to "decide" how to operate. In movie context, more application components are needed, e.g. to (i) compress series of images in order to not have to write the same data for a sequence of similar images. Et cetera. In series I all these tasks run "concurrently" on the single Expeed 6 processor - concurrent implies time sharing where each task is progressed a couple steps (one at a time in a single core, single thread, processor) and then the next task is progressed. This mimics "parallel" processing and because it all happens in micro seconds, we think it is "parallel". Series II really can run tasks in parallel, now. Can you appreciate if the software for the camera was designed properly in the first place, that driving the "UI innovation" of series II into series I firmware should be really easy? Well, I can. A decision to upgrade to II with many early adopters is not an excuse to stop improvements in I as these impact second hand value positively - one of the strongest points of the old Nikon F ..F6 (film) cameras. (*) data center or enterprise drives can handle vibration that each active drive produces and the other ones have to deal with. Consumer drives cannot handle such vibrations: never put two or more of those together in the same cabinet. Today, a NAS certified (example) 2.5" 1TB drive of about USD/GBP/EUR 70 can handle such vibrations when other drives of about the same price cannot - just keep 2.5" and 3.5" drives in separate boxes. Or go SSD.

I think they brought out the cameras we should have gotten 2 years ago (better late than never). With that said, as Nikon shooter this is enough for me to stay with them, the Z6/7 are good , so improving them is ok on my part, plus the mark II are good value. I mean sure the R5/6 are better on paper, but both are much more expensive relatively and with their overheating issues, they can't deliver what they promise anyway.. And the Sony A7S III is probably the best video camera Sony will launch in the next 3 -5 years, and from a stills prospective it's 12 MP... for god sakes. not a hybrid for sure. So the Z7/6 II are not ground breaking but they are powerful and well balanced work horses... As for articulating screen well, those are mainly for vloggers. Again from a stills stands point they make the camera intrusive and bulky and are you going to Vlog with a heavy full fame camera? If you are truly serious about video you'll add an external screen any way.. so for my need the Z7 II is perfect , finally a proper replacement for my grand old lady the D750

This is the reason I am not "giving round of applauses" for Nikon.. This is the camera they should've released 2 years ago... This year should've been a z7 with a 60+mp sensor and z6 with great video specs out of the box...
@LOLA6ifyable
@LOLA6ifyable 4 жыл бұрын
@@arunashamal maybe the Z8 would be 60+ , then again why would you need so many pixels? 45 is still a more than enogh for most uses.. heck even 20.. is. Unless you crop 70% of your photo or print it on a 7x9 meter print.. in which case maybe you are better off with the GFX 100 , with 100 MP I am not sure throwing huge MP numbers and get in to yet another MP war is worth it. And the video specs sound great .. what are you missing out on? 4k120?
@arunashamal
@arunashamal 4 жыл бұрын
@@LOLA6ifyable This is a very popular point on the internet that is truely moot. There are job where megapixels are needed.. e.g commercial car and fashion advertising photography etc..as you said if your marketing strategy is sending potential customers to fuji that is not a good strategy. The problem is too many hobbyists with money to burn buy these cameras and dictate how it should be when all they do is look at the photo on a computer....They say Z9 is 60+ but is going to be an sports camera.. I think 60 is too much for an sports camera and it drives the price higher without needing to be, but it remains to be seen ... The current fine print on z6II video is 4k on dx crop 8 bit... maybe they should've copied sony and make the z5 a video powerhouse...

Well done/said. As we have seen from other manufacturer's, major improvements can take up to five years, which is the reasonable life expectancy for a body (enthusiast). These incremental improvements are good, and are there when the body needs to be swapped out. I appreciate the straight forward review...without attitude or weird affected speech patterns.

I wish more people on social media and KZbin would discuss the new Z mount because that is the one feature about the Nikon Z's that I like. And you can see it with the new S line lenses. I wish some people would obsess less over specs especially when it comes to video. Most photo enthusiasts and dare I say professional photographers don't even use the video feature on these cameras. No one cares if a camera can or can't shoot 4K 60p.

Thanks for the video so refreshing to find someone who actually like the Nikon Z cameras. I am sick to death of other you tubers who slate the system. I think that too many of them make so much money from continually changing their brands, Nikon then canon then Sony then back to canon they have completely forgotten normal people and what they want a camera for to take images, all cameras take them exactly the same way it the person behind the camera that makes the image. Thank you again I new I wasn’t the only one who liked Nikon.

Every time somebody talks z6's autofocus is good enough, i am thinking that we both are using totally different cameras. D5100, d7100, d750 user here. Now using z6. Af just sucks, sometimes failing under normal lighting. It confirms Af but the image is blurry.

I've been looking forward to this video. I think the improvements have solidified Nikon's commitment to the Z system. I prefer Nikon take their time and deliver quality products and not feel pressured to compete based on 'tech specs'. I think there are photographers who are overly consumed with the latest specifications rather than the discipline of photography. I've seen some of the comments on Nikon's KZbin page bashing the camera for not being on par with the newest Sony and Canon cameras. If we're only concerned with the latest tech rather than investing in our craft then we've lost sight of our true objective.

I've just as of a few days ago invested in all of the extras needed in order for me to upgrade for a Z6. I would like to call myself an intermediate photographer. I'm yet making up my mind as to which kind of photographer I'm interested in becoming. I'm currently a shooter with the Nikon D7500, which is also the first camera of mine, that I have owned for a little over a year. Since I'm not the kind of photographer that does jobs (yet), which in turn doesn't make me return the cost of the gear that I like to invest in. So far I'm a proud owner of the D7500, the 70-200 VR II, and a few other lenses. In recent times, I've been spending a lot of time convincing myself into investing further into more gear, hence the Z6, and why I am commenting on this video. However though, as the Z6 II was suddenly introduced, right after I finally convinced myself, the dream of the Z6 was put on hold until the Z6 II was unveiled. I was waiting for that so that I would be able to compare the specs and to see if Nikon would make an enormous leap forward or rather just an incremental update, which it has proved itself to be. However though, as the incremental update has introduced a few extra features, especially the dual processor, I'm rather uncertain whether to wait another month until its release and get the mark II or if I should just go ahead and get the mark I now. What makes me uncertain is that the mark II doesn't seem to bring a lot of features that have a large impact on my use and 'style'. The problem with most reviews is that most old-school camera review channels that have been known for creating enormously informative and high-quality content have been very unreliable in recent times. Most of the good old review channels spend a lot of time 'harassing' Nikon, especially for its Eye-af and face-af, being slightly slower or different from competitors like Sony or Canon. Going from a system that doesn't even have those features, and being focused on the thousands of other genres within photography, literally lynching Nikon for its face-af features is literally a point that is too specific and single-genre focused to degrade the overall performance and complete usability of the camera. After all, the old-school saying of 'being a good photographer isn't dependant on your gear', has turned into you can only be a good photographer with the best of the best and least flawed gear. What I want to know is, is upgrading from a crop-sensor, midrange, and fairly a good camera to the Z6 II overrated, or should I rather go with the Z6 mark I? In my vision, the Dual-processor seems like a more futureproof system since double the power should be possible to bring at least a little more out of the camera, although the sensor and most of the other features are mostly the same. To put it into perspective, is buying the Z6 II over the Z6 like upgrading from an iPhone 11 to an iPhone 11Pro? I'd like to get someone's opinion on purchase the Z6 ii over the Z6 is unnecessary since I already feel like the Z6 is a very great looking camera from its specifications.

Get the Z5, and you'll save some money as well, since you don't need all the other bells and whistles of the Z6 or Z6 II. Having full frame instead of DX is already a huge upgrade (I had a D7100 and now shoot with a D810 - big difference in so many ways). At last, don't listen to these KZbinrs, they have an agenda, they're not actually reviewing the camera, they're look for something to blow it up and create controversy.

I’d like better AF, I’d like the vertical grip, 4k 60 etc but I can hold off as a hobbiest. My z6 is only a year old, mint condition and relatively low shutter so lots of life left in it. I was thinking if it came with the roadmap 24-105/120 - I’d definitely consider. From a working man’s perspective, I can see the reasons to straight away, enjoy man and liking the do, I’m forced into a shaved head haha but it suits you! Peace man

I'll definitely be upgrading-trading in my second camera, a trusty old d600, but keeping the v1 z6, which will then have the long lens on it. Like you, I like to have gear as light as possible. 2 cameras hanging off a shoulder strap with a 24-70 on one and an 85 or 70-200 on the other gets heavy after a 10 hour wedding! The great thing about the z's is you can also put 𝐚𝐧𝐲 Nikkor glass on them too (I already have the magical manual 1969 Nippon Kogaku f/1.4 which was $100, pristine from Japan!). If you make the OK button zoom the EVF to 100%, you can even use a manual focus lens in the dark-lock to an eye in wide area, compose, zoom in to acquire focus, and you're done. It truly is a low light beast, and makes it so we can concentrate on the photography instead of what the camera can or can't do.

Got the Z6 Filmaker’s Kit to shoot ProRes RAW “game changing” video... there still is NO cooperation between Nikon, Atomos and Apple to establish the workflow from the shoot to the Final Cut... no camera profile in FCPX... no LUT to baseline... it’s like Nikon simply FORGOT why they thought this was supposed to be a “game changer” or Apple simply gave the middle finger to Nikon and Atomos to favor larger cameras for 4K content.

I use two D810 (and a D800 for backup) for photographing weddings and a Z6 with the Atomos Ninja for wedding videos. I haven’t upgraded to the D850 because was thinking to go with the Z7 for a lighter option however didn’t want to risk working with only one card slot. So many people have criticised the z6 and z7 because of the two card slot thing as well as the autofocus. Obviously it depends on your usage but I have used the z6 and z7 for weddings over the last 18 months as well as the z6 for Wrestling photography which is fast moving and unpredictable and they have never let me down. The only niggle I have ever had with the autofocus is its occasional lack of focusing on backlit subjects or back focus on backlit subjects but to be fair this is a rare thing and you learn to deal with it. The z6ii and z7ii will inevitably fill those gaps and much more but whichever you choose or stick with the existing models they are still fantastic cameras and I agree the s mount lenses are a real revelation compared to the g lenses.

With the DSLR, I owned cameras from both brands and even had their lens trinity. Back then, I used a D3 as my primary camera (backup by D300) and a 5D Mk II (backup by 5D) to serve as my secondary, for higher MP & video. This practice was better for handling their see-saw product launch cycle and being able to use each other's unique lens. For instance, the 85 f/1.2 & video were missing from Nikon. I called it best practice, having backup to backup. I also remembered the Canonites had to wait long to get the 7D to match the D300 and some even adapted the Nikon 14-24 f/2.8. I didn't think it was anything strange about such practice since I used Nikon F2A & Hasselblad 500 C/M when I started four decades ago.
