We just couldnt bring our selves to investing. And the colors / rendition of Z9+ 85 1.2 Z is another level

Hi Matt, I am a bit surprise that you left out Sony in this comparison. Just curious why. Enjoyed the video. I am owner of the Nikon z50, so a comparison of the Nikon Z50II, Sony and Canon APSC camera would be fun to see.

Making the sensors - who and how. I don't think that the difference between the light sensitive diodes in the sensor actually make the big difference. The sensor has photosites that pair each diode cell with a circuit that builds an analogue Voltage during exposure. and the combination is a photosite. These see the entire humanly visible spectrum of light (more). So in old black & white film jargon these are "panchromatic" as they see pan=all colours=chromatic. But that is still greyscale. Where the difference becomes very important is not the sensor but in the filters in the Bayer grid over the Bayer sensor. You have to compare that grid to a 3-way cross-over filter on your loudspeakers. Low frequencies have long wavelengths and compare to red, green to midrange and blue to the high frequencies. The cross-over has not just cut-off frequencies (wavelengths) but also there is a fall-off slope from the cut off frequency. Ideally, you want to cut off between blue and green in a way that the cut off frequency is at a distance from each other and where the two cut off slopes intersect they add up to 100%. Pace the cut offs closer by each other and you get a peak, farther apart and you get a dip. Here, not just the cut off wavelength (frequency in Hz with audio) matters but as said also the slope of the cut off. What this cut off slope determines is how much green can seep into the blue and vice versa. And the same applies between green and red. There's lots of art to this and it matters a lot. I would imagine that a camera brand has patented this carefully, long time ago. Nikon may have benefitted from their collaboration with Kodak in the early digital photography days. Note that colour film works differently as we have three layers on top of each other with subtractive filtering between them - giving RGB in theory at every location in the frame. What matters is that tere is colour separation filtering again and this will make a difference. This Bayer colour filter grid design then also impacts the raw processing a lot. Because in raw processing the missing colours from the raw file are guesstimated.

Great video Matt!! I have never considered Canon mirrorless, and this solidifies that decision. And as you said multiple times, "With lenses, you get what you pay for." Do you plan similar comparisons with other focal lengths? 35mm, 85mm, and 135mm? Although we already know the Nikon f/1.8 lenses are truly stellar 🙂

Thanks for the video! Strange result in shadows with Canon. Was Canon tested with electronic shutter?
@jpdj27153 сағат бұрын
While I watch the video. Nice imagery, Matt, really. The three shots at 8:26 look considerably differently exposed. Which of the three did you use to measure exposure? One, or each to their own? You cannot transfer the measurement from one to the others IF you don't know the T-value and aperture breathing of the different lenses. And, as the ISO institute does not define correct exposure with the ISO unit, you have to add a potential effect of that in transferring a measurement from one to another.
@jpdj27153 сағат бұрын
9:32 shows a red hue in the Canon shot, especially in the blurrier and darker zones. Question is if this is a profile thing or a sensor thing. No, it's never a sensor thing. If it is "near the sensor" then it is in the cut-off wavelengths of the Bayer filters, and the rate at which these filters cut off from the cut off wavelength (the slope of the filtering curve).
@jpdj27153 сағат бұрын
11:55 the Nikon looks slightly overexposed but that may be a matter of reducing exposure in C1 a tad.

Matt, great video, as usual. On a separate topic, do you have any idea when Nikon are likely to update the Z8 firmware, it's been a while?
@RotmmDesign2 сағат бұрын
Honestly, I think this may be a good idea for a video topic for Matt to approach. Personally, I think the days of Nikon delivering exciting new features via firmware are in the past. After launching the Z6 and Z7, their sequels and then the Nikon Z9, Nikon had a lot of catching up to do and these packed firmware updates went a long way to recovering a lot of trust in the Nikon and wider camera community. Now they have somewhat won people over, I suspected they are holding back headline updates for whatever flagship(s) on the horizon. My ZF has only ever received bug-fix firmware and I think from now on the same will be true for my Z8. Sad, but they are a business after all.

Hi Matt - Good video but rather unfair. In Ireland the Canon RF 50mm lens costs 250 Euro at list price. The Nikon is 729 Euro almost 3x the price. I think the VFM performance heavily favours the Canon. I don't think the Nikon lens is 3x as good!!
@JuanSanchez-zz3me6 сағат бұрын
Nikon doesn't really have a normal 50mm. The 1.8s is basically a high end professional lens, just with a 1.8 aperture. The Nikon 50mm 1.8s is as sharp as the canon 50mm 1.2L. Maybe that's not worth the price to you, but that's kinda how it goes, since Nikon went a different route with their 50mm. I suppose their 40mm f2 is their new nifty fifty
@praetorian656 сағат бұрын
The Canon is more comparable to the Nikkor Z 50mm f1.4, which is still more expensive but 2/3 of a stop more light., but then the video wouldn't be comparing f1.8 lenses.
@johnhudson6666 сағат бұрын

I see no fringing, just the Canon choosing a redder tint to the scene. The green/yellow glow to the other two is overall, not on points of light. All 3 have different framing so that will have a small affect on metering, methinks.
