I love how you brought in the story about Steve McCurry! I met him in 2004 when he came to speak at my university. Right after the talk I introduced myself and asked him to sign my Nikon D70, my first DSLR, with a red permanent marker. Every time I looked at that signature on my camera I wanted to go out and take photos and I think it was a big factor that lead to me becoming a professional photographer!

I'm first cameras was the F-301 and FM2 and Now I own the Z8, Z6ii and I have just recently got the Z6iii and I can say they are all incredible cameras and I haven't had any problems with the Dr on the Z6iii shooting weddings and it's a great upgrade from the Z6ii I love your style and the way you have integrated Steve McCurry story in to this video. makes me want to get the ZF and hit the streets again like I did 25 years ago for my degree. Hi Jack, when you announced this video coming I was quite surprised to know you'd consider the Z6iii. I guess I'm getting to know you! I am glad you put this out there because I have been back and forth about whether to buy it. Again, your videos are so tasteful - truly, I'm hoping you continue to publish great content like this. Weaving in the story of McCurry's final Kodachrome roll really puts a much needed perspective on the theme of head vs heart. Well done! And I had been waiting for a solid perspective on the Z6iii. Thank you for providing that! I shoot 50% street (with the Zf and other micro four thirds cameras), 35% event photography (just sold the X-H2S and was planning on the Z6iii or Z8) and 15% wildlife/birds. For my camera replacement, I wanted to be sure about the next move, so your video was invaluable. 🙂Thank you again!

Wow! Editing master you are! Brilliant your narrative here is! 😅 (That's as long as I can hold that!) Seriously, I'm trying to stick to Nikon if I can because: old lenses. This video hits more than one of my sensibilities. I'm old enough to have had an undergrad photography course in which we started in b&w and made our own prints. The Kodachrome story was a nice bonus within the task of picking a camera. And quite to your point: is it too much to ask for both?😁 All I can say is keep going. I'm subscribed. I love when my curiosity and my catalog brain and my (you said it right) ...my heart are all getting involved at once. Very nicely done.

Finally nice to hear someone talk about these cameras with the emotion only Nikon brings. I can tell you’ve watched the other videos on the z6iii calling it basically a horrible camera “because it marginally flickers in the shadows at 51200 iso”…… as if there weren’t pros using a 1/4 of the capabilities of even a Canon RP and getting better results. I think for just photos the ZF really is the more fun camera. It’s why I have a Z6III and a FE2. Video is where the Z6III really does do laps on the ZF but that old photo charm of the ZF is amazing. Oh man, I want to like the Zf. I keep looking at these retro styled cameras, comparing the Zf and the Fujifilm X-T5. Every time I pick up a Zf, though, the ergonomics are just kind of bad. And the fact that everyone buys a grip for it just demonstrates the flaw.
@Carthodon
@Carthodon 4 ай бұрын
I own it and don't see it as a flaw. Why should people be forced to buy multiple cameras in order to get one which is compact and one which can support larger lenses? It's strange for people to say it is a flaw when there is a clear advantage to the setup.
@gshocker77
@gshocker77 4 ай бұрын
I agree that the ergonomics of most of the retro styled cameras are not great but I think that is part of the reason that people gravitate towards them. It is hard to have that retro styling without having poor ergonomics.

I did not love the Zf grip right out of the box either. But, my experience shooting it is just fantastic. (Not flawless.) For reference, I have shot a lot of Nikon cameras. (N50, N75, F100, D70, D200, D2x, D300(s), D3 and D800 all before going mirrorless.) The Zf is one of my favorite Nikon bodies. First it’s the F100, then the D3, then the Zf…and it is rapidly rising up the ranks the more often I shoot. There is nothing magical about the Zf. I like how the camera feels. I am impressed by the image quality. At the end of any session, I have more keepers than with any other camera body I have used previously. I always want to have my Zf with me, even when I am sure I won’t need it. If the Zf does not do that for you, I hope you find one that does! Then tell us all about your experience.

I'm a hobbyist. I have the z6 II and the z8. What I don't like about the first and second gen Nikon mirrorless cameras is the focus tracking and the screen blackout in burst mode. Which is why I broke down and bought the z8. The z8 is great for landscape, wildlife and sports. But it's also a heavier and larger camera and the files are larger. I would like to sell my z6 II next year and buy either the zf or the z6 III. Ergonomics is also important. My head and my heart are arguing right now. From my understanding the zf still has a little bit of screen blackout but not as bad as previous bodies. The z6 III has a little bit of blackout when using the mechanical shutter. I'm not sure if that's a readout speed issue or from the shutter opening and closing. I do a little bit of everything from portraits, milky way, street, landscape and macro. I have the z8 so I could just not spend the money on anything. Maybe spend it on a trip. I would love to go to Iceland for the next total eclipse in 2026.

The blackout doesn’t bother me too much for my style of shooting - confirmation that I actually took the shot! Sounds like the Z6III is more your speed, but try out the Zf in a camera store? Might help you make your decision a bit quicker. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for another great video! It was nice to hear thoughts on the two cameras, particularly when you have spent so much time with the Zf, rather than just a week for a review. Your connection with the last roll of Kodachrome was really fun too! My father found a roll of Kodachrome in his old film bag that had expired in 1993, but gave it to me. To my delight, I was able to shoot it on a Nikon F2 recently, and the shots actually turned out quite nice! I purchased the Nikon ZF before the Z6III was released, while waiting for the Zf the Z6ii went on sale and I picked one up,I have a collection of cameras that span 16 years, my first DSLR is a Pentax K100D Super, followed by a K10 D,and several others including the K3 MKIII AND K1 MKII. To the Pentax bodies I added Fujifilm, Panasonic, the Nikon and a Sony A7 MKII and MkIII along with Olympus 4/3 bodies. I would still chose the ZF over the Z6 III for the simple fact that I have many similar types of cameras and I primarily shoot stills, the Zf is a unique camera and it is easy to shoot B&W and color. It also reminds me of my late uncle's Nikon film camera, I have a Fujifilm XT3 and XT5 and the Zf builds on the retro style that I enjoy using without getting a film camera. When I started adding different cameras to my collection of Pentax cameras I choose some that were different like the Zf and XT5 and some that were similar as far as controls like The Panasonic S5 MKII and G9. Another reason for the different cameras were the lens selection and design that are unique to each camera systems.

Here's my reasoning... if it's not for work, get the camera that tickles your fancy. You don't need it... some of the most famous and most loved photos have been taken with a simple analog camera, that can't do even a percent of what these modern marvels can. Get what you like to operate, look at, carry around with you. The photos will be fine, no matter what you get. Also, I wouldn't really consider chasing the latest and greatest a good form of 'therapy', but that's maybe just me ;)

How long will that retro joy last though? I went from Canon 5d mkiii to Fujifilm system (full switch) back in the day and was XPRO user for years. I loved the retro feel initially, A LOT, but then.. tried to fix the ergos so I get a better grip on the camera.. then the physical dials which I initially loved started to be annoying because I'd accidentally change the settings whenever they catch on something (clothes, bag,..), plus I really only wanted to use few settings I fine-tuned, so once set I didn't use those dials much. So I sold my Fujifilm kit, and was only shooting medium format film camera for a while. Meanwhile prices of developing (and scanning) film skyrocketed, so I'm going back to digital. I definitelly want full frame, and torn between Zf and Z6iii. Zf has the looks, but then I already experienced that with Fujilfim XPRO and it does wear off rather quickly, so this time it won't be a factor for me. Z6iii has similar ergos that I loved on my old canon eos 5d. It looks like an average mirrorless, and can not be more boring, which is fine. I shoot mainly portraits & family & only using (fast) primes, but would like to get into video podcasts. If looks wouldn't be a factor, and given the above, which camera would you go for folks?

@tomxaak thanks for sharing. I used to run a 2 camera video podcast, full HDMI out is very useful. That alone might be reason to go with the Z6III. Retro doesn't have to be a fad if manufacturers treat it seriously but a lot of makers (even Fujifilm) think of these cameras as second tier enthusiast options. Hopefully the Zf line continues, maybe a ZS rangefinder next (I can dream!)

I'm planning to replace my old D800e with either the Z6iii or the Zf. I've been reading forums and watching comparison videos for a week now. I don't shoot videos and don't intend to. In my early youth, I spent a lot of time shooting on film using cameras similar in design to the Zf, which makes the decision even more difficult. @@BokehTherapy Again, as you mentioned in your video, my heart is completely captivated by the Zf, but I understand with my head that the Z6iii will remain relevant longer than the Zf, on the other hand, in terms of price-to-performance ratio, the Zf is currently leading, for example in my region I can buy new Zf, protective glass on the screen, new 40mm f2 Nikon z lens and L grip for about €2000, while the new Z6iii alone sells for €2300-€2600

Well written as always! I don't have a ZF (yet), I actually own the Z6III, but I think the ZF is just as an important camera in Nikon's repertoire. Its important that, in this spec and speed race, we have another simple and bonafide photography camera with heritage; something that we thought was exclusive to Fujifilm and Leica. This existence of this camera makes me hopeful for the future of Nikkor lenses that are more bespoke, character driven, and unique to compliment this retro body. We already see this trend in the various pancakes and the new 35 1.4. Perhaps a 50 1.4 next?

Hello Stefanus! I have a dedicated Wotancraft video coming up next month, will have a longer term review of the canteener bag there. Thanks for the feedback! Auto ISO works the same in all modes, but easiest to see in aperture priority. If auto ISO is on, the ISO dial sets the minimum ISO (1600 in your example). Max iso stays the same as you’ve set in your menu. If you turn auto ISO off (can only be done in the menu), then 1600 on the dial is the fixed ISO. Took me ages to figure out but this is it - hope that makes sense.

Jack and others, This is my first week with my ZF. Having watched a few 'how to set up your ZF' videos, I was anticipating the absurdity that bypassing those oddly comforting brass old-world-invoking knobs on top, would make for a quicker to adjust set up. But, I also use a Z50, so with the set up you describe the two function more alike. Could Nikon issue a firmware update that would allow the "C" settings on the knobs to function like "A" on Fuji cameras? What do people think...Would that make for a simpler more direct way to manage the exposure triangle? We'd still probably need to put aperture on a front or back dial, given our Nikon lenses don't have aperture rings. Thoughts?

Another wonderful, engaging , smart video. I'm definitely leaning more in favor of buying the Zf over the Z6III, mainly for the tactile retro dial experience fro landscapes and cityscapes. I think it would be interesting if you devoted a video to examining more deeply the differing experience of using these two cameras, mainly for stills. The Zf clearly is designed for slowing down and enjoying the dials, and the Z6III, with its DSLR layout, is the more efficient fast-action shooter. I imagine seeing all the settings on the familiar top dials (in Manual mode) before putting eye to EVF (sadly, lacking only clicky aperture rings on Nikon Z lenses) is more instantly satisfying and intuitive than using the front and rear command dials, while also having to press the ISO and exp. comp buttons, or deciphering the top panel mini LCD settings screen or EVF info. display. But that is probably my familiar analog film camera bias coming in. I'm really looking forward to your adapted lens video next week. I worry about losing in-camera auto lens distortion corrections (especially for wide angle lenses) when adapting third- party or vintage lenses. Thanks for your inspiring, enlightening videos!

I guess if you are alone and crazy ya don't know but having been looking through rangefinder and slr glass my whole life, evfs suck for me. I wish Nikon would have put a better evf. Maybe next version. Maybe with the return to retro we can get a new DSLR FM2D? LOL

Yes I have found EVFs all about the same - I prefer OVFs myself. Have you tried the Z6III? It’s one of the best, but still an EVF. Rangefinder Nikon ZS next please!

I really like your inclusion of the Kodachrome story into your journey with how to incorporate two bodies into your workflow. I am curious.. Do you find that you sometimes have a hard time choosing which camera to shoot with in a given situation? And when do you work in shooting with your Leica collection? I am planning a trip back to Japan in a few months and am struggling with what camera gear I will pack. It is the problem with wanting to be portable and not miss experiencing the vacation and lugging heavier gear for the fear of not getting some imagined shot or regretting not having some lens with me. I find your video journey to having given me some insights into your similar struggles at times. Keep up the great work. Looking forward to the next video..

If I didn’t shoot video it would be Leicas all day! Nikon Zf is a nice balance of the two, old school charm with manual focus experience that is quite unique as well. My last few trips to Japan I brought 1 auto focusing camera and 1 Leica. Will see if I change that setup up for the next trip. Thanks for watching!

@@BokehTherapy if I could stomach handing out that much cash it would be Leicas all day long too! I just can't. So, thank goodness the Zf provides a really good experience on the manual focus side, especially.

Do you record your videos in 1080p and upscale them to 4k? I ask because your footage is so SOFT, it doesn't look very good to be honest in 2024. Can you clarify?

lol it's a lot of work to make footage look this soft! I shoot in 4K and grade it to look softer in post. No ultra crisp 8K on the channel unfortunately. Thanks for your feedback
