I’ve listened to and studied other trombone soloists including Watrous, Urbie, Frank & Carl, Steinmeyer, and a dozen others. This particular performance, IMHO, outshines them all. Absolutely stunning in its simplicity and lyrical quality.

Such a great trombonist. I love his long, vibrato-less tones even more than his great technical facility. When a jazz musician can do that, they way Miles Davis did, you know you're listening to someone not just instrumentally great, but someone well beyond that - someone artistically great. Nils is that someone here.

He plays quite effortlessly and with great tone throughout and beyond the range of the instrument. At 4:44 he is off the charts, yet still manages a vibrato and a melodic Eb above double high Bb. Not sure that has been played before with such musicality.

Nils Landgren has such an incredibly beautiful sound. His phrasing is impeccable. He sings on that horn from the depths of his soul. Sweden produces some great bone players! Christian Lindbergh, and multi-instrumentalist super talent Gunhild Carling to boot. I think that Nils could have followed classical playing if he wanted, no problem at all. He'd be great at that too!
