It's obviously a city car, so the max speed is fine, the range is fine & for someone just looking to commute to work or grocery shopping it's damned near perfect. I'd be reasonably confident that with such a small wheelbase, the turning circle would be impressive & a lot of fun. The cabin volume being so compact means that minimal energy would be required to heat it & on hot days windows down would be fine. For me, I'd take the rear seat out & take advantage of the extra storage. I like it. 👍

For a strictly urban driver, this would be much more useful than an Aptera, which has become more of a suburban highway car. This little thing looks like it will handle almost all the use cases that Aptera may not do well: potholes, traffic circles, u-turns, evasive maneuvers, urban parking, etc. The height helps drivers of conventional vehicles see you, so it would be much safer than a bike or scooter. In my city, some people use golf carts in their neighborhoods, so this would be an improvement in terms of the weather, as we have four seasons here. If I got it, I would need to keep my conventional car in order to drive to the suburbs or country.

Not sure what you’re even talking about--. You can drive across the country in an Aptera AnD there’s actually room inside it for “gear”. This thing-- pretty much useless unless you’re going to just stay in your little city bubble.

@@ambroulard Driving across the country is not the same as driving in a city. Last year I drove across half the country twice, using two-lanes as well as interstates, and didn’t encounter the use cases I listed above. But I encounter those use cases consistently in the city where I live. My ICE cars and RV are able to handle those use cases…I have often parallel parked my RV, which is the size of a box truck. By its recent design choices, Aptera is seeming to be more focused on suburban and highway driving. Maybe soon they will demonstrate how well the gamma can perform the use cases mentioned. Until then, I remain skeptical of Aptera’s usefulness in urban driving.

You left out one of the features of the Nimbus that is a strong selling point. The small battery is removable/replaceable so you can carry an extra and swap out if needing more range and/or charge one at home while using the other. I have a use case for the Nimbus. I do a lot of urban driving and its size is appealing for getting through traffic and especially for parking where the Aptera's width would be an issue. We (My husband and I - empty nesters) will buy an Aptera and we reserved a Nimbus. We will use the Nimbus when either if us has work in an urban setting and the Aptera for everything else. We live in FL so AC is necessary. Also a reason to carry an extra battery.

Till I saw the Aptera at thar San Diego EV show, I did not realize how big and wide it was. I also saw the Nimbus there and spoke to the founder and one of the engineers and was quite impressed with it and I think it would be the ideal city and commuter vehicle. The ability to remove the batteries for charging is a huge selling point for apartment dweller. They got to make it so it can drive on the highway. I don’t see how they can make it for around $10k, even if they build it in China. I am rooting for these guys and Aptera, cuz like you said the current 4 wheel EVs are behemoths in size and weight for hauling 1 to 2 people.

I put a deposit down here in SoCal for the Nimbus One S. For under 14K you get a lot, and it TILTS. Can't say that about any other EV that is designed and sold in the States. I love my Tesla too and I'm an investor in the Arcimoto FUV (which I need to HODL for a while) and I also love the Aptera....but I've been wanting a tilting micro EV for years. It's finally being sold. Now to wait it out until 2024. The S doesn't have removable batteries, but I have a Tesla Wall Connector for fast home charging. I agree that the removable battery packs would be amazing for someone who wants to charge inside an apartment. Good way to build up forearm and grip strength too. The Nimbus One S has a top speed of 75mph and will have more range, so it's quite good as a city commuter or short freeway jaunts.

Nimbus did suggest an X version with 90mph capability some time ago, but I suspect that will come later once the initial Nimbus One becomes available. But yes, 50mph is a touch too slow for North America. I've test driven the ElectraMeccanica Solo and I was impressive with the drive, handling and build quality. They produced a convertible concept called the O2 which added a nice recreational flair. Otherwise, the Nimbus is a compelling option. Just add a wee bit more power. 🙂

This is a great option for someone like me, I am a single senior. Currently I am driving a 5 passenger Ioniq but it really is more than I need. Before this I had a Fiat 500e I would have gone with another Fiat 500e but Fiat stopped its electric car production for the U.S. I just got a communication from Nimbus stating they plan on doing a transportable battery pack which would be great for apartment dwellers like myself, currently I have to rely on public chargers which is inconvenient even if available. I live in the City of San Diego and street parking is getting very difficult plus many apartment complexes have less parking than the number of apartment units in my case my senior apartment has 54 units but only 27 parking spots, my manager says 2 yr. minimum wait for a parking spot. This vehicle would take the smallest of street parking spaces and the availability to park like a motorcycle. California also by 2030 wants 50% electric vehicles on the road. San Diego is also in the process of converting many city streets to bike/pedestrian walk ways so smaller vehicles like this would be very desirable. Another nice option is to lease for $200 instead of buying. I also have an electric trike, but would feel a lot safer in this a enclosed vehicle plus A/C welcome in the Southwest. Thanks for great video, I hope this does come to the roadways soon.

It seems popular to want this to go faster for highway driving, but in the real world it would be disastrous. Why? I remember too well riding a road (push) bike & being shoved laterally by spontaneous side wind gusts while doing 30ish kph, it was terrifying. Factor in that the Nimbus One design has a narrow track & a significantly larger non-aero side profile & you guys want to challenge freeways? I remember driving & following a VW Beetle & seeing it jump a lane from a strong side gust of wind while doing 35mph/60kph, imagine that situation if driving a Nimbus One at 85kph+ on a freeway under those conditions. 😳 I understand that the Nimbus One has tilting suspension while turning, but will it compensate for freak side winds? There'd be a good chance that the Nimbus One would topple over which means that any safety braking etc would be rendered useless.

The "Extreme Bull Commander" C30 is an EUC (electric unicycle) with a 80 kph top speed. Safety is relative (and some people are nuts). It seems that like the Carver EV the back seat is more kid sized and cargo is not really much of an option. The Aptera is the correct size for my needs with my wife, dogs and need to transport my gear. I cant imagine taking one of these little vehicles up to the mountains or on a forestry road but the Aptera should handle it fine.

It seems a better competitor to Arcimoto or the Solo. It certainly is small and would be weather resistant, as opposed to e-bikes, and it wouldn’t be easily stolen compared to an e-bike. The $10k price is an attention getter, but you really have to need what they provide (narrow/cheap) I would frankly be worried driving that on a freeway at 70 MPH, out with Semis and pickups. To me, the Aptera is a far more capable EV to replace a car, and well worth the 3X premium. But in it’s tiny niche market this could sell as a NEV (neighborhood EV)

My commute requires 5 miles at 60-70mph and 15 miles at 55mph, so they would have to bump it up. I would go with the Arcimoto before this unless I lived in California where lane splitting is legal and this would be very interesting. The Arcimoto can do 75mph and 100 miles range and also doesn't offer fast charging. The Aptera is a more complete solution, but for just running around in a city, I would use a scooter or motorcycle and there are starting to be plenty of EV versions for under $5k and highway capable for under $7k. Or a gas Honda Grom does well over 100mpg for about $3k
@kenmcclow8963
@kenmcclow8963 2 жыл бұрын
I left off my reply that the tilting aspect might give it the win over a lot of other three wheel vehicles just because it may feel more naturally like a motorcycle. It might be useful in cold or rainy climates to be enclosed, otherwise I may prefer just to be on a motorcycle. One reason I like the Arcimoto is that it has the windscreen and roof, but you can leave the sides open, or enclose them easily as the seasons dictate, but honestly in the PNW just keeping the rain off is usually enough and if you are going to wear a jacket outside you will be just as warm but they have a heater too. But while Arcimoto is stable it doesn't have the tilting wow factor. If I was to move to Florida where golf carts rule the roads, I would get an Arcimoto, but would consider this Nimbus if it had a good AC

I could go for it if it were street legal for the interstate. 55 mph minimum 70 mph maximum. So say top speed was only 60 mph. And maybe increase range to 200 miles. Up to 15,000 USD. Sold.!
@gildardo
@gildardo 2 жыл бұрын
Look at the competition, zero has a model with 100 plus mile range and its $20k+in price. I have ridden Honda scooter and motorcycles. I have come to understand the special use case for each size range of two wheelers. Small scooter, in the 50cc engine size, are light and easy to ride in the city and suburbs. Moving up to a 150cc scooter, now your can take some short highway rides if needed, but it won't be comfy. It's still a good size for city because it's not too heavy, you can manhandle it easy. It's bigger wheels can handle bigger pot holes. Its suspension will still be limited in terms of travel, how much it compresses. My point is this, if you want to make that small 150cc scooter a highway monster your will need to increase the suspension travel, valve them for highway use, also bigger wheels to deal with those potholes a high speed, bigger engine to allow you to keep up with traffic up steep hills. After all this,it ain't a city scooter anymore, it's heavy and harder to manuever. A bigger battery and 60 mph top speed would be a nice compromise. That's pretty much a 150cc scooter with AC.

Well this thing is more a motorcycle replacement getting better efficiency, great for going somewhere close, and cheap insurance. Aptera will have cheaper insurance than most cars only having 3 wheels, but this thing will be way cheaper as the main thing insurance cares about is weight, danger to others, and market value. This is dirt cheap, weighs nothing, and is thin enough that most people can just jump out of the way or you only take up a quarter of the lane.

@@Skylancer727 I suppose but a motorcycle is generally going to be more fun, with speed, handling, and open air feel. The Sondors Metacycle is 80mph with I believe 80 miles range for $5k, plus the battery can be easily removed and charged inside any room. But if this Nimbus fits two people it could be a more comfortable option for those who usually don't ride solo. I've considered getting a Metacycle in a couple years but I think one mechanic of motorcycles is stupid and the Metacycle doesn't fix it. Pulling back on the handlebar shouldn't accelerate the vehicle, as whisky throttle is the natural human response when losing control.

Hmmm. Wouldn't work in the rural area where I live, but definitely a nice option for more urban environments. Or areas where golf carts are common for transportation, although a lot of times those are retirement communities and especially if you wanted to carry two people ingress / egress for the passenger would probably be a no-go. Driver seems pretty easy tho. Places like Tangier Island in Chesapeake Bay might be good - golf carts everywhere and only like two cars on the island when I visited several years ago.

They have the Halo X which was listed as $19K but it will be more. The HALO X has a top speed of 90mph and it would likely be a death trap on the highway. It's not wide enough stance wise. I have an ebike and the ebike on nice days is good enough for more of my needs and is better than either vehicle in a lot of ways. Why? Well first it's available right now. The Nimbus Halo looks a little bit like a typical Asian scooter. It has a heater and AC option. I would want a heater for winter, but wonder how such a vehicle would perform in the cold winter if you don't have a garage and I don't. I know EV cars may pre-heat the pack before you drive with heaters on the battery packs. But compares these to a typical Ebike. . . a velomobile is going to take up more space than a bike a bike is slower but for short close trips for those who are for example retired, the extra time in the commute is not a big deal with an ebike but for the VELOMOBILE some drivers are crazy and you need to transition to sidewalks to get away from them. An ebike can do that but a VELOMOBILE will have major problems getting on a sidewalk as it's so wide and large. Range is not as much of a deal with an ebike because you are not going to want to go as far. I have an ebike which is a Rad Runner PLUS utility bike and a VELTOP roof option with a big adjustable windshield and half roof option. I rarely have range anxiety if I pedal assist and don't need to use the trottle only much or high speed to much. I can usually get by with a ebike without range anxiety but I only drive about 15 miles a day for my own errands, often much less. So he Aptera will be charged by the sun alone as I want the full solar optoin. EBIKES are hard to beat. HALO is for roads and safer than a scooter, but for a car replacement I'll go with the Aptera. The Aptera is a replacement for a two person car, plus hauling supplies like a Prius which means for some of us the Aptera is enough and can replace a car.. Aptera can replace a car. I'll probably sell my truck once I'm happy with the Aptera. Or park it and drop insurance on the truck. The Nimbus HALO with any form of power will not replace a car on the freeway as far as I can tell. I don't think the HALO X is a good idea, I'd never go on the freeway with it. The HALO seems more like a typical large handicap scooter like ebike we see in some Asian videos. In Michigan we have had strong side winds which of course turned over my ebike when it hit the windshield and roof in a parking lot and the bike fell over fortunately away from any cars. Aptera doesn't need to tilt to deal with winds while parked. How do I park a HALO if it's windy. I have to park my ebike with the VELTOP inside at times if I leave the windshield up or on the bike. I can't count on parking it in strong winds, Neither would I trust the HALO, so it's almost as bad for strong winds as an ebike as far as I can tell. It's heavier, but you must drive it in the street. I can avoid some rush hour traffic with an ebike, but not the Aptera or HALO. The Nimbus halo may TILT while driving but what about parking. If you're in a parking lot and the wind blows strong it will likely tip the car over. I get side wind tilting and have to counter physically with a VELTOP which has very little side wind resistance because it only has small flaps. It's mostly open and a half roof, the setup I have. It will keep me dry in rain and snow, but I won't drive a two wheel bike in the snow and want to avoid the rain. So a three wheel is better. The Nimbus Halo is a car for city driving under 45 miles an hour highways. It must go fast to stay away from cars and keep up. Velomobiles are useless in the USA because they are to slow and traffic can't wait and be patient for a velomobile. So they are the worst of all worlds. To wide and to slow. The Halo is a sweet spot above a ebike for winter and ice and snow, maybe. But it's useless for some in the summer. The price went up from the intro teaser price due to hyperinflation of the US dollar. I reserved to buy a HALO, but I planned on owning it via lease for a year or two before buying an Aptera. If they both come out close to each other production wise, then I'll buy the Aptera and skip the HALO. The Ebike is good enough for almost ten months a year. Why? I drive slower on the sidewalk but avoid pedestrians and traffic and I can transition from bike paths to streets easily. None of the others can do that. So the Bike is the best to me, and most fun. I can ride in cold but did snowmobile and wear warm snowmobile outfits in the cold. I avoid snow and rain so I can get by most of the time with an Ebike which is WAY CHEAPER than a motorocycle solution. Keeping away from cars is the key to try to reduce risk. But on an ebike I'd likely die if a car hits me. And with a Halo, also less safe than a car or Aptera. The Aptera is the minimum long term and most usable vehicle. Many systems are in the $20k three wheel motorcycle category and none of them can touch the functionality of the Aptera. Halos sale price went up 48 percent and their lease price 100 percent. And I"m betting their price will increase. Don't even know what their AC will cost which may make it even less attractive. I hope it can have an open window for warm weather or an affordable workable AC.

Thanks Steve, I enjoy these casual talks on sustainable modes of transportation. I live on a 40 MPH (everyone is passing you at 40) very busy highway but this would get me into town and shopping. I think ten grand is in the market place but then I think most everything is priced too high. You might be up for 70 on something this small but I think I'll hold your jacket on this adventure. Suggested future topics would be the MLM from Arcimoto and the SAM from SAM(?).

It’s a bit chicken and egg, you can’t put these vehicles on the same roads as larger heavier cars and trucks, but they are perfect for inner city’s, once ice is totally banned from these areas through prohibitive charges most likely then lots of small electric vehicle will start to thrive, not sure anyone would need to own it though it’s more likely to be rent per mile

I really like the removable batteries, but the Nimbus is too big for it's battery capacity. For such a small trike it not very efficient in comparison to the Aptera. Those batteries belong in a much lighter, more efficient trike. Overall I like it, I've an Aptera on order and won't consider this until after I get the Aptera. If I were to make changes to the Nimbus I would make it longer for more cargo and put say a non removable 10 kw battery pack at the bottom in addition to it's current removable batteries. On a different topic how about a review of the Outrider Alpha now on gen 5. I've yet to see a good independent review of the Outrider Alpha. It's even more of a niche trike than the Nimbus. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fGnVe4qse9t0rqM

I'd like one, but it's vaporware. So, nay. They're still in prototype stage after years and nowhere near raised enough money for a factory. Arcimoto has a simpler vehicle and they're barely staying afloat. They missed their 2022 shipping date. Then their 2023 shipping date. And we're weeks away from them missing their Q1 2024 ship date, especially since they still don't have a factory or production line or for that matter a production-ready prototype.

So it's basically the Toyota iRoad. The 3 wheeled two person "car" that is fully electric. Sadly the Toyota iRoad was never buyable. Toyota only sells it to rental firms for driving around Tokyo Japan. From what I know it's never been anywhere else in the world. Though I did see a ride in one on youtube, can definitely say I see why. It seems to have been cheaped the hell out with it having basically no suspension. These small expansion gaps on the highway which other cars glided over, that thing hit it like a curb. Okay they even have the iRoad in the video of theirs. But again, the difference is this seems to be one you can buy, while you can't buy an iRoad.

I have reserved Nimbus vehicles based on Steve's Fully Charged review and his enthusiasm for the vehicle. We will rent Nimbus One's and will buy Nimbus One S's. The rental is to use until the One S is in delivery. One each for me and my husband. We will see who can deliver first, Nimbus or Aptera. We will keep the brand(s) that best match our use cases and some common ones. We are currently Tesla Model 3 drivers. We are both STEM people and will use a formal DOE (Design of Experiments) and do a detailed competitive analysis of Nimbus and Aptera. My husband does this for a current legacy vehicle manufacturer transitioning to EV products. We are excited to do this as an enjoyable family project with the participation of our engineering and scientist children. Yes we are a family of nerds!🤪
