Today I talk about nimdow. A window manager that takes inspiration from DWM but without the complexities of configuring a window manager through source.

May or may not have mispronounced nimdow for the entire video. *shrugs*

Ok, so hear me out: we make a SUCKUR, a Suckless User Repository. It's a site where you can go, you select whether you want DWM, Surf or whatever, and then you can tick boxes on a menu for the patches you want and then you download your souce files or your binary file. Be honest, wouldn't you use it if it existed?

One way to find out. Go ahead and set it up. I think that it would be a full-time job to maintain, personally.

I don't know. I've never used nix. I would think that you'll have to compile nim and then build nimdow. But again, I have no clue so I'm just guessing

Frankly, ever since I learnt about clean, minimal window managers like BSPWM and BerryWM - whereby they are just a window manager without built in status bars and whatnot, I can't get into others that have their own status bars I know I can probably change it, but hey, it's about the blank slate allowing for mass customization :V

Yea I love bspwm, I don't plan on changing, but I would love to make a more lightweight window manager clone

i recently just tried out LeftWM and wasn't too impressed. but it looks like the time spent learning the config (toml) will come in handy after all. nice!

I've been using off and on for the past month or so. I have really enjoyed it. I switch between it and bspwm. I installed it on void linux. It has worked really well for me. Great video.

I know what a scratchpad is, but what do you use it for? I can't figure out what I'm supposed to do with it and thus don't know if I need it. Gimme some examples so I might figure out and start using it.

This is beta? It is awesome already for a small Wm Matt! I agree this could be the next DWM or clone as it were. Yes the config is a LeftWm style and that in it's self make it already fun to use and it has Matt's scratchpads... 🙂 Thanks Matt! LLAP 🖖

Sorry, I still see no reason to use scratchpads. I wonder if that is a workspace thing. I recently saw somewhere that switching a workspace on one display, changed it on all. That would be very annoying to me and I would have some need for scratchpad when I do not want stop monitoring some window.

rule of linux: if there isn't a window manager written in x, there will soon be a window manager written in x. i wonder who will write the first zig window manager.

@@donaldmickunas8552 there is one that uses elisp, so i'm sure it could be done. but going through that extra layer of jvm might be an issue.

This WM looks like it has some potential - I like it! I've been surfing through distros, window managers and desktop environments since I first took a Linux course at a local university in 1998. We were given a copy of Red Hat 5.2 and I was immediately hooked on Linux. I have never been able to stick to any flavor of Linux, WM or DE over all these years. Something in me just was not satisfied with the way any of them looked or operated lol. I could always find something I was not happy with and so would continue my search. Then I found Archcraft and honestly, there is nothing I would change. The Archcraft BSPWM combo is spectacular! Fast, light and 20 different themes at a keystroke combo! I love it but I honestly miss distro hopping lol. Might have to give nimDOW a try :))) Thanks for the great preview. Sorry for the novel lol

The more fragmentation I see in all of these tinkerer dream tools (and I praise the freedom of choice) the more I apreciate full fledged desktop environments made by one team to grant consistency throughout the whole thing. 💪😌

@@WildVoltorb That is why the example file is provided. It gives a pretty good example regarding format. If you’re looking for complete configs that you can edit, it is too early for that with Nimdow. This is beta and not well known.
