Commenting on the train accidents (US perspective): In the US, we have an incredible amount of freight rail. Many of the rails are really really old, and it's more-or-less accepted that every month, a few trains are going to derail and tip over. But since this is freight rail, it's only stuff being transported across the US that gets injured, plus the two-man crew on the inside, which sucks for them but they usually have a decent idea of which parts of their route are highest risk and can brace themselves. For example, in 2022 there were 952 derailments, but only 4 injuries. Passenger rail incidents are much less common. I mean, passenger rail itself is much less common, but even accounting for that.

What people need to understand about plane and train crashes is that they are news worthy. They are big things with lots of casualties, but they are orders of magnitude rarer compared to car crashes. Car crashes don't make the news, there's usually one or two casualties with the bad ones and they happen so often that people would get bored of it very quickly. It would be a long enough segment on regional news, but you could have a national news channel that's just listing of car accidents happening all day every day.
@pax683310 күн бұрын
But also, the plane crashes are uniquely terrifying. Like there are some where it talks about how everyone was pressed into their seats by extreme G-Force as the plane pushed into an uncontrolled dive. Sounds fucking horrifying for a person's last moments.

Sad irony is, cars are by far less safe than trains and planes: trains and planes are driven by professionals who are held responsible to always comply with safety protocols so accidents are an exception, while on the road you're virtually guaranteed to meet an idiot who'll endanger everyone just so they can arrive a bit quicker, so accidents are a rule.

That's so unreasonable, though. You have times more chances to die from car accident at an Uber drive, than to die from plane crash. The door flying out is even more unlikely - the most dangerous parts of flight are takeoff and landing (and flying over some Eastern European warzones). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Travel#Safety By any of three metrics (distance traveled, journeys count, hours spent) - you have more chances to die in a car or bicycle accident. Air travel does have more deaths per journey - but this statistic counts very old cases (when there was literally no Air Traffic Control procedures yet) of midair crashes and cases of military shootdown which usually leaves literally no survivors hence driving the death-to-journey ratio for airplanes much higher than by other metrics.
