One of my favorite lines with a couple different layers to it is when Nimona and Ballister are arguing right before she reveals that she's a shapeshifter, and she says "if you don't [trust me] you're going to die in this closet."
@Maxwellish9 ай бұрын
never thought about that line before, good catch!

to be fair it's not like he was actually in the closet, lol

^ I mean everyone only refers to him and Ambrosious as friends, and when they do the romantic snuggle at the beginning they’re in away from everyone else and in shadow, so it’s kinda implied that they’re in the closet.
@Maxwellish9 ай бұрын
I really like how Gloreth’s line “Go back to the shadow from whence you came.” started from a place of fear, but when the Director says it, you can see it’s evolved to coming from a place of hatred. it showcases that so well.
@bouboulroz8 ай бұрын
It's still fear. At the core, she still acts out of fear of the "crack in the wall", it's just "expressed" through hatred.

This movie’s setting of a high tech futuristic world combined with a medieval like atmosphere is symbolic choice by the graphic novel’s author ND Stevenson. It represents how despite how much our world evolves and moves forward, old times times issues from before such as discrimination remain ever existent

Nimona was nominated for an award. Because of this, Netflix released it on KZbin for free. Such a great movie. There's so much to unpack. I've seen it at least 2 dozen times and have done several watch parties with at least a dozen people to spread it's awesomeness. Nimona's personality and mannerisms are so much like my daughter that I told her if there was a live-action, she HAD to audition.

I absolutely love how the environment in this film plays into the story’s theme. the futuristic tech yet they still rely on unnecessary medieval practices, it’s just so well done.

I love the detail that she can't feel pain. Cause like, can you imagine how excruciating it would be for her to be able to feel her body expand, shrink, her bones and muscles shift, every time she shifts? It's like a survival mechanism her nervous system developed in order to shift! And I never see anyone talking about it! 🤩😻🤩😻🤩😻🤩💜😊

It's a little sad that this movie gets so little attention from reactors. I don't quite know why. Perhaps it's easier for them not to get involved with the inevitable drama that still comes with discussing topics surrounding the LGBTQ community. I didn't even know what this movie's true theme was until I read more into it after watching it. And if you only go into it skin deep it's still an extremely well made movie with great performances by the cast and some stellar animation. Thanks for giving this one the attention it deserves!

Nimona's power is soo much more than just shape shifting since she can turn into anything she think and even make up stuff at will. normally shapeshifting is more like Beastboy form Teen Titan (you turn into existing animal) but Nimona can create entirely new body (her human form) combine trait (when she has sharm teeth/ wings) and even do thing not normally possible (when she turn onto Crispy and shoot cereals or breath fire) her only 2 draw back seem that all her transformation have to have pink somewhere and be a type of animal/creature/entity. from my perspective, Nimona is the embodiment of animals and life which is why she can turn into anything that can be considered as an animal no mather if it exist or not

34:00 the two questions is an interesting point i havent seen anyone bring up ^_^ iirc the first time hes asking how she came to be this way, *what* she is, and its pretty much like the whole "but whats in your pants" question that gender non conforming people always get. Hes not open to her existing as this, he just wants to figure out what box to put her in. The second question is received much better (possibly because he retracts it anyway, giving nimona the space to not answer if she didnt want to) as its about how she feels. Hes asking about her experience of it, rather than trying to categorise her God i love this movie, every part is so well done with the gender metaphor :DDD

it would have helped publicity for this movie so much more, if they had led with "I'm a demon" if *["I'm a demon"]* rules immediately go out the window, and nobody can question a thing! nobody complains about Genie breaking the 4th wall and flipping the tables on everything! why? because he's a GENIE! a magical creature for whom rules simply DON'T APPLY!

The creator of the graphic novel just came out in the last few years as trans. Presumably that inspired a lot of the story.
@jimballard11868 ай бұрын
I kind of hate to think so. Because if the story is based on his real life, then I have to ask myself, who are the Bal and Ambrosius in his life? Who are the gay (or whatever) people he used to know who should have been allies but were enemies instead? But me hating to think so probably doesn't change the reality.
@omegastar198 ай бұрын
@@jimballard1186 Its not like that. At the time the author wrote Nimona, they had not transitioned yet, nor had they decided they wanted to transition. As such, in the original comic the character of Nimona is quite different, though nonetheless a reflection of the thoughts the author had about gender at the time they wrote it. The author transitioned a few years ago, and when the movie was made, the author made changes to the character of Nimona to put more emphasis on the character being an allegory for transgender people as a reflection of their own journey as a transgender person. But the story is not based on real life.

33:30 as a trans person myself, with a well-meaning family who's had a looot of innocuous (but exhausting) questions, allow me a little monologue: when he asks her "does it hurt?" it's already a way better and genuinely interested question than his previous ones, which were way more along the lines of "why are you like that/why are you inconveniencing me/could you tone it down at least/give me the perfect narrative of your existence that will make sense to me". but i think the important part, why she was able to open up and be honest, was the fact that he immediately took a step back: "sorry, small-minded questions." it wasn't small-minded, it was a good and empathetic question, but it showed that he understood that she doesn't have to answer, he doesn't have a *right* to an answer. especially not the right to a perfectly educational, streamlined little speech that so many people want/expect. she shouldn't feel pressure to explain and thusly justify herself (let me say that again: her *Self* ). by his walking back and taking off the pressure, she had the space and could feel free to *actually* answer and engage. unconditionally, so to say. and in turn share something about her experience that was actually meaningful and expressive. being allowed to ask questions and be genuinely curious is awesome and super important. it's how we learn, grow, and connect, as humans. and i implore everyone to think twice how your questions will position your marginalised friend, if it's engagement on your terms or on theirs, if google or an info flyer could satisfy your curiosity just as well, if you're making it easy for them to consent to or deny answering, if you're (accidentally) questioning them, and if you actually want to listen to their experience. thanks for listening and for your empathy, dear reader! :)

If you consider the gender roles of most traditional story types based on older eras and such, gay romances make sense when it comes to telling stories not about a hero and damsel-in-distress, but a story about two warriors (not just a modern male/female warrior, but old era male/male warriors) or two damsels(-maybe-sometimes-in-distress).

I feel terrible for Nimona and all that she endured for hundreds of years, if not longer. But I also feel bad for Gloreth; she wasn't an evil, fanatical woman. She was just a little girl that fell victim to fear, both her own and that of the adults around her. And it makes me wonder what really happened in the 1000 years between the initial confrontation and the events of the movie. Did Gloreth grow up with the fear constantly in her heart and mind, and wind up founding the Institute? Or was her story used by others to promote fear and hate, with Gloreth herself as just a figurehead? For that matter, did the Institute deliberately spread the lie of the 'great and glorious confrontation between the heroine Gloreth and the terrible monster?' Or was the actual truth known at first, only for fact to fade to history, which faded to stories, which faded to legend, which faded to myth?
@ronhoward1217 ай бұрын
The most important thing I noticed is that the director is never the antagonist, though she represents society. Nimona needs acceptance, and the person standing in the way of that is... Ballister. Ballister is the antagonist, despite being the most supportive person in the kingdom. He accepted her, but he didn't ACCEPT her, and it's heartbreaking to watch the results of that decision - leading her to the point of the sword. A perfect analogy for the othering queer folks experience and how the best intentions don't always go far enough.

I loved this movie so much!! It was so entertaining! And had a great message. I personally took the symbolism for Nimona to be just someone who doesn’t fit into the box. Perhaps maybe non-binary gender fluid more so than trans. But I can see that too I guess. I loved what Achara said about it being a way to makes this message and idea of lgbtq+ people existing easier to understand. Sadly people still would rather hate. 😔😢

It doesn’t matter if your are a man, woman, or shapeshifter. You are a great person from outside and inside you. 😌 you are part of humans family and let no one judge you on who you want to be or who you be.

I did genereally enjoy the movie. I think the contrast between Nimona and Ballister was perhaps a bit too pronounced, at least in the beginning, like the writers were trying too hard to have two distinct characters. Once they got more of a groove going, when they learned each others quirks, I enjoyed their relationship much more.
