This song was originally written in '64 and she covered it in '65. The characters in the video represent a modern take on Nina and her daughter (for real) at a time right after leaving a long abusive marriage in 1964. She was starting over and was having this new awakening when she did this album ("I Put a Spell on You") so watching the video with that in mind I get a sense of just how much of herself she poured into her music and how real that emotion was. It was always like that for her.

I love the spirituality around honoring sacred femininity that is so rooted in African tradition, and also love that this was positive, romantic vision of a beautiful, loved and loving black woman who grew up in a beautiful home… seems like too many portrayals of African American lives are of struggle and while I get that’s important to portray sometimes we miss the magic and beauty and love and affection and soul in these beautiful families and traditions and I love how this was really all about feeling good and giving out love rather than just a sort of over simplified portrayal of overcoming blatant struggles to get to a place of feeling good

Wow…the full orchestra behind Nina’s infectious voice is perfect for the dancer’s creative video. OUTSTANDING---Nina’s outdone every great Capitol Records recording of Frank Sinatra’s classics with the Nelson Riddle Orchestra! You can’t get any higher praise than that about anyone’s song, recording, orchestral arrangement or any other means to measure true greatness in the music world!

I love how all Nina Simone songs feel like you have ever listened to them without actually having ever listened to them at all because of how much they have been sampled by other artistes.

I believe it is "only" about freedom. It is so sad that alot of people think its a feel good song. She was so brillant that she left it to those ignorant enough to hear what they want to hear.

Cleansing with sage and a ritual bath. Family. The first time I danced to this song was in 2017 with my uplifting dance teacher Alberto Valdes. Tears of joy. Thank YOU. Feeling good seeing these images of joy and hearing Nina Simone's powerful voice singing FREELY.
