This is truly amazing. This song is the reason I have become obsessed with NIN. I First got With Teeth and liked almost all of it but when I heard this song I was truly mezmerized & in awe of Trent's incredible lyrics. This is the only song in history which can make someone depressed when they're happy but happy when ur depressed. One of the best bands of the past 20 years without a doubt. Gonna see em live on May 20 with Janes Addiction 1st concert ever. Cant b more excited!

Trent is a genius that is for sure...the same lyrics presented by any other artist just wouldn't have the "Trent factor"...This song makes me feel something profound inside even if its on replay and just plays over and over, it never dulls, it never loses its effect...every single time I am blown away...It definitely makes me reflect on myself in a much deeper way than anything else..."And if you look at your reflection Is it all you want it to be?"

Right On! Not many of those type of musicians around anymore. Trent is one of those enigmatic figures like Jim Morrisson, but also has the power and sincerity that is beyond music, much like John Lennon or Bob Marley. They stand 4 something even greater than music.

This even gives me the shivers... this is so beautiful.. And I agree, it is true that not ONLY ONE person can change the world... BUT and this is a GIANT BUT (hehe)! If more people try, all those people can become one.. and there you have then.. then you already changed the world.. instead of saying he or she is white, yellow, black, brown fuckin purple I dont care... We're all frickin' human. And thats the end of it.

Trent seems to have the world as we know it (or don't know it) in a nutshell somewhere locked away in his house so only he can view it and he just shared that with us all.

Its awesome when you think about it how far reaching is NiN's appeal. Considering it isn't exactly mainstream, yet remains so relavant. I hope you do manage to get your visa xakestar. :D I'm from Singapore myself and its one of my goals to see Trent live someday too. When i get out of school and earn some money of course.

There is nothing cheesy about it, or at least, that doesn't have to matter. I've had a song completely change things, I could never explain why, because there is no logic there - nor does there need to be. Being moved by a song is one of the things I live for. Most of the time I am completely logic-based and calculated. But when that inexplicable feeling of creativity strikes, I embrace it 100% - and I would expect any other human to do the same.

I think if anybody has the power to change things in this world with just music, it's Trent Reznor.

no , but one person can create something that will create a chain of positive influence, something to make other people think and so it goes and grows ...

Trent Reznor seeks to see the point in life. He is a textbook existentialist and this song is pretty self-evident of that. You can call him that or just an angst-filled philosopher.

@takuukuitti Very true! Feel almost the same way. I love this song cuz everybody has a different interpretation of what it means. And it's been one 1 of my favorite songs of the past 4-5 years 2. And nothing like having the feeling of universal hopelessness and bliss @ the same time. What other band or songwriter can do these things and evoke these thoughts and emotions? I'm actually planning to get a tattoo of this song!

The funny thing about this song is... it seems so deep, so meaningful, right? But why? Because it asks (at least on my interpretation) if you're really sure that there IS any meaning. So a song that deconstructs "meaning" is meaningful in the sense that it challenges meaning itself, haha.

I admire Trent for how he progressed rock and implemented electronic elements in a style that is truly unique, however when I see bands showing imagery of Bush and the crowd getting all riled up, it all seems so generic, yes i want the world to be perfect and good for everyone, no poverty no wars, etc, its just not that simple. When clinton invaded yugoslavia, bands weren't showing him no the screen. I feel that politics and music shouldn't be so intertwined but music should be more personal

Might sound strange but I prefer this song to Hurt. It breaks my heart more, it seems more universal and ambiguous. Hurt is still fantastic though but the ending is obviously more (intentionally) nasty. This is sheer bliss.

That's an interesting point. I'm no fan of Bush but, in spite of the damage he has done to this country, I see him as more of a person to be pitied...a small-minded, easily controllable, inarticulate frat boy that won a popularity contest. What bothers me most is the fact that people tend to hate him because it's popular to do so, without being able to give specific examples of his "crimes". It seems to me that this is the same kind of blind obedience and conformity...just on the opposite side.

I also find it a bit ironic (and wonder if this was partly his intention) that these images are being PROJECTED and at the same time he asks whether everything you believe in is just in your head -- i.e., your psychological projection(s) onto the real, possibly meaningless world..

the funniest aspect of your comments is the fact that you don't truly know what poverty is sitting at your computer commenting on music vids..what's better is trent being a millionaire and not minding it one bit, hes a great talent, my hat goes off to him, but this notion of new world order is quite hilarious.
