Lady Ethereal's boss sequence just instantly shows Red Candle Games' iconic story building method which is extremely dark and full of gore-y, haunting scenes. The same thing can be seen in all of their previous works, all the way from Detention to Devotion. Right in the moment when I saw the sacrifice machine at the beginning of Nine Sols, I said to myself right away:"That's Red Candle Games right there!" as most of their titles ain't gonna f around with beautiful, bright or innocent things.

In story mode, your energy doesn't drop even if you get hit. In normal mode, you die with just two hits.

This is where the game shines imo. You have to know every movement of the boss, you have to parry them (it's the most efficient, rathar than dash away), and you have to be patient. When you accomplish this, every boss fight become a dance, and the game shows its true form. This combat design is genius.

Yeah the difficulty of this game I found harder than Sekiro being in 2d… brutal and is spiked so much once it hit halfway. No longer having fun and switch to story mode which was just waaaay to easy.

The plot is mainly based on the Chinese mythology of hero Yi shooting down the nine suns. Originally, there were ten suns and each take turns to shine, but one day, the suns suddenly decided to all come out at once. Of course, doing so basically turned Earth into a living hell, so Yi the great archer grabbed his bow and shoot down nine of them (since we still need at least one sun to survive), along with some other dangerous evil beasts. Nine Sols just made it a bit more cyberpunk. Basically, Yi and the nine rulers are solarians. They came from another planet with more advanced technology, but their planet is in danger, so they decided to colonize Earth and exploit its resources. Earthlings thought they're deities and worshipped solarians, but solarians see them as nothing but inferior lowlifes and tricked them into making annual sacrifice. Yi, however, after being awakened and lived with Earthlings, decided to save them by destroy this twisted system.

I kinda prefer this one too, but I'm sure if they are implying things will just go bad again eventually in this ending. The other ending is interesting in a way to me as usually cultivators realize they are defying the natural order of things, but Heng is a naturalist, and I view the other ending as being able to let go and reach some resolution between the siblings, even if it's bittersweet. So while accepting reality is prolly more mature and spiritual thing to do... Meh being alive seems way more dope than embracing the void.

​@@alyxlocke1284 I'm late, but there is a perk that lets you recover instantly out of being hit. So you can dash out and parry the next hits. The combat is very rewarding once you learn the bosses moves and timing. By the end of the game, you become a god and counter every boss attack with damage. Water flow talisman is good too. Using talismans to add extra damage can help a lot for longer boss fights and it converts internal damage on bosses to full damage. Waterflow is good because you don't need to manually trigger the explosion with it.

My one gripe that pulls any score down, is the lag in certain mechanics. Just because I don't appreciate being stuck in an animation when I want to dash or jump away xD In my case it's the healing pipe + dash.

Real. While the bosses always having some sudden animations that you have to rely on sound cue to get used to their attack patterns, your movement is extremely clunky and restricted by huge delays between attack/parry and talisman/dash.

Another problem to be aware of, load times can be brutal. I'm trying to do the final boss and after every death I get 7-10 seconds loading time, a screen that takes a couple seconds to run out of, another 7-10 seconds of load time, then an intro cut scene that plays _every time_. Makes getting into a rhythm hard. And this is a computer with an SSD and 3070 (mobile but still).

@@AditBasu Trust me when I say I suck at combat related stuff. Never played Sekiro or any Souls game, they intimidate me. But I've now defeated Ji and omw to N&F in Standard mode, having played 18 hours so far. I spent 42 tries on Lady ;_; All you need is patience, and maybe a smidge og luck for a lucky attack pattern :)

@@AditBasu Tell me about it. I've played HK multiple times, and I prefer Soul mode when playing. Done all tiers of Godhome, and tbh, only the last 2 compare to some of the bosses here on Standard. But fireb0rn, a KZbinr who built his channel on HK, agrees that the only thing this game shares with HK is the Jade = Charm system. Exploration and narrative remind me more of Ori, while apparently the combat is a lot of Sekiro and Katana Zero, though I haven't played either.
