Alonso could have been a 4xWDC by the end of 2008 so stop crying. Alonso had his chances. He won back to back titles at Renault and then joined McLaren at the perfect time to make it 4 consecutive titles, with 2 different teams, from 2005-2008, but he completely failed because he couldn't handle the fact that Hamilton was better than him, so resorted to blackmail, with his own involvement in the Spygate scandal, before running away from a 3 year contract like a coward only for Hamilton to become the legendary McLaren world champion that Alonso failed to be, and, will never be. If instead Alonso didn't act so disgracefully in 2007 then he'd have still been on good terms with Mercedes and would have probably been driving for them in the hybrid era. Its all completely Alonso's own fault.

Getting that car into points was/is a challenge in itself, then there were some remarkable overtakes, defences against much better cars and that epic drive in Baku.

VANIK According to F1 rankings of the 2007 championship, Kimi was 1st, Lewis 2nd and Alonso 3rd. Now officially that means Lewis finished ahead of Alonso in the standings. At best, Alonso couldn't beat a rookie. As for the team and Ron Dennis, even if true, Alonso created that situation himself. And only has himself to blame for it. Afterall, being the great man he is, all he had to do was assert himself as the champion by clearly beating Hamilton. He didn't.

Inspiring the young generation... I can say this is very true in my case, I don't think I would've fallen in love with the sport this much if it wasn't for Fernando. I think Alonso will come back if a spot in the right team presents itself in the next few years, but I think Massa is probably happy with the shorter calendar in Formula E and more time with family. I don't think he'll be back for a full F1 season.

I wasn't an Alonso fan before until these past few years at Mclaren. I have always respected him since Minardi days, ending the Schumi era, the best in getting the most of a car and that 2012 Ferrari season. But sticking to a less competitive Mclaren I guess made him more mature and now I think his greatest legacy is passing it to the next generation. Inspiring the next gen of Spanish racers like Carlos S. and more through his karting school. Mad respect for putting most of his money to kids than a lavish lifestyle. Buena Suerte. Muchas Gracias.

Sir_Flankalot It's the change of everything that ruins McLaren. Those 4 years that Red Bull "dominated" McLaren ended the season with the fastest car. And instead of making changes to that car, they built a new one from the ground up, and were the slowest of the top pack at the start of the next year. McLaren have this philosophy of new new new. But it doesn't work in the long run. And then they get to this point, where they cannot make the ground up because the leaders are way to far ahead. Williams has money issues, what is McLarens? They only started losing sponsors after they teamed with Honda on a new engine where their competitors were already ahead. The last time new worked for McLaren was Lewis Hamilton. That was a long time ago
