My son had to go to traffic court for his "Failure to control speed, resulting in an accident" citation, which the trooper who issued it said would be thrown out if he showed up to court because the trooper had no witnesses. I went with my son, and we sat in the back waiting to be called. The man next to us had a stack of citations more than an inch thick. As it turns out, he had the baker's dozen from one incident. Driving on a limited-access highway, the man suffered a cardiac arrest and lost consciousness. His van veered slowly to the right, crossed the bottom of an entrance ramp, bounced off the guard rail, and careened back across the travel lanes into the median, hitting another guard rail and rolling out of control. A photo of the scene showed papers from the van strewn for about 150 yards down the median. It turns out the SAME trooper who issued my son's ticket and tipped him to the dismissal in court was the first to the scene of this incident. The driver, who had been ejected during the accident, lay dead on the grass. The trooper proceeded to write *13* citations against the dead driver, including "Failure to produce registration." Paramedics were able to revive the man, who showed up on court with an affidavit from his doctor asserting that the driver was dead at the time of the accident. Sadly he wasn't able to restrain himself and stick to the simple "I was dead" defense, and eventually the judge tossed out 12 of the charges, but convicted him on the "Careless driving" (aka reckless driving in other states) charge. I just have to ask, how on *Earth* did the trooper decide that the best course of action as the first responder on the scene was to grab the citation book and staaaaart writing? Maybe next time he might initiate life-saving procedures, as would be the duty of a first responder?

I met that officer after breaking down in the truck. Since I was empty dispatch asked me if I could make it "mobile" so I did and proceeded to work my way to the repair shop about 3 miles away. That's when officer (redacted) who had been watching me pulled me over and proceeded to write several tickets, pulled the plates off the trailer and had it towed. Live and learn. I hope officer (redacted) is enjoying his retirement and getting treatment for the carpal tunnel in his ticket writing hand

One of my friends got 33 tickets once. He was leaving a car show that he drove a race car to doing a major burnout. His lawyer said he was lucky he got the stack of them because he couldn't do much about 2 or 3. Sure enough as soon as the judge saw that pile of tickets he tossed them all out and said it was ridiculous.

Reminds me of a friend back in the day (before computers and central data bases) being pulled over for having a “loud car” and the laughter from all the passengers when the police asked if this was his first ticket. At home tacked on his overflowing cork pinboard there must have been at least 50.

Many years ago we went on a motorcycle trip. We were about 600 miles from home and we got pulled over by a NY state cop because my buddy had a taillight out. I didn't know but he had an expired license, no motorcycle endorsement and expired tags. The cop shook his head and said, "I was just getting to end my shift. I don't need all of this, just pick one". So he got off with a taillight out.

Thanks for the story. I remember a story long ago in California when a driver filled out a vanity plate application and have the option of adding alternate vanities in case your first option is rejected. The person only wanted his first option and in the alternate entry he wrote "NO PLATE" and then submitted his application. He was rejected on his first entry but was given his alternative and kept it for its quirkiness. Soon afterwards, he started to get massive amounts of parking tickets for all of those vehicles that were ticketed and had ‘no plate’. It got fixed.

I had a similar experience coming of age in Chicago. I racked up a pile of tickets driving before I was licensed, and when I finally got my license, I had it about four or five months before they connected it with my pre-license history. It took me two decades to get a legitimate license and clear all the tickets that went back to 15 and across three states or so. I served two decades in the Marines, so I had tickets crossing several state lines. Life's a lot easier these days, having accepted "authority".

My grandfather had a beautiful 1970 Cadillac; it stayed in my garage year around. We would take it out about once or twice a year wash it, wax it, and occasionally we would take it for a drive, literally around the block; out of maybe 5 times I remember we were stopped twice as the vehicle didn’t have plates on it. While we were never ticketed I always thought it unlucky given the rare nature of the drives and high amount of stops, but vehicles without plates are easy to spot. I recall the first time driving it after registering it and it just seemed odd driving it with a plate and without Pops.

Having gone through Ontario's graduated license program some 20+ years ago, this guy deserves all those tickets. You can't drive on 400 series highway, no alcohol, secondary driver. It's all drilled into you to get your G1 and you must pass a test to get it. This guy clearly messed up but on top of it all, I'm sure he got towed away too since that car could not be legally driven.

Hi. I am from Ontario. G1 is what you would call a permit. You are required to have a full class G driver in the passenger seat - and you are not allowed on any of the 400 series or QEW - 0 blood alcohol. It lasts 1 year minimum or 8 mo. if you take a registered course with the MTO and must test up in some short period. G2 you dont need a G driver in the passenger seat. You can drive on the 400 series and QEW. But you have to maintain a 0 blood alcohol. There is a one year minimum and you must test out in 5 years. G is the normal licence.

If you have a G1, you CANNOT: drive on any 400 series highway (401, 402, 403 etc.), drive between midnight and 5 AM, have any alcohol in your blood. You also have to be with someone who has at least 4 years of driving experience. Love the work and glad I came here from Vinwiki :D

Ireland used to have a weird driving license system, where when you started learning you got a provisional license/learners permit. The first was good for 2 years, during which time you needed a someone with a full license with you when driving, which probably isn't unusual. However, it was only good for 2 years, after which you had to take a test before getting a 2nd provisional (though applying was sufficient as it usually took time to get a test). However, under the rules, when you were on a 2nd provisional, you didn't have to be accompanied by someone with a full license. So in theory you could turn up, take your test, fail miserably and drive off afterward, on your own, completely legally. They eventually changed the rules though.

BAC over 80 is also a criminal offense and is an increase over the severity of "Operation while impaired". “zero BAC” for novice drivers is only a traffic offense but has pretty steep fines and license suspensions.

I stopped a woman once, she was 68 in a 55, talking on her cell phone, and had her 10-year-old son in the van. I never much liked writing citations so, after running her information, told her I was going to give her a traffic warning. I started to discuss the matter with her and she showed me the palm of her hand while looking in the other direction, (dismissing me, it's a bad idea to insult a Cop in these situations) and said "I'm sorry, I feel like I'm being lectured!"....."Yes ma'am, I either give a citation or a lecture."....."Well, I will NOT be lectured by YOU!"...."Ma'am, you understand that it's either a lecture or citations?"...."You do what you have to do, but I will NOT be lectured by YOU!"....."Okay, sit tight, I'll be right back." I wrote her an infraction cite for the speed and a two-count misdemeanor citation for inattentive driving and child endangerment. The lecture would have lasted around three minutes and she'd have been on her way, but, this way, at least she didn't have to listen.

Sadly ALL of the information on restrictions on the G1 is in the "Drivers handbook". It is also included in the information you receive with your license. In Ontario you are required to inform the ministry of Transportation within 6 days of a change of address. It usually requires going to a ministry office and filling out a form and I believe paying a $10 fee ( I could be mistaken its been about 15yrs since I last moved). And there are 7 or 8 highways in the 400 series plus the Lincoln Alexander pkwy, the Don Valley Pkwy The Gardiner Expy and the QEW. With this persons level of IDGAF I'm wondering if he at one point previously had a license, lost it, Then decided to try again. Thus the 28yo with the G1 and a scofflaw attitude toward following rules.

Hey Steve. Canadian here. Wanted to clarify a few things about the licenses here in Canada To get a G1, you just need to do a written test. That's it, not even a driving test. You can get it immediately when you turn 16 and it's ridiculously easy, designed so you can't fail unless you know nothing about the road. You are only allowed to drive with someone who has their full license, and are not allowed to drive on highways or have any alcohol. The entire purpose is so that drivers can learn to drive before getting their full licence, either by their parents or a paid driving instructor. It also has a time restriction where you need to apply for and pass your G2 exam or it will expire. Essentially a learners permit After about 6 months on your G license you can apply for your G2 which has much less restrictions, then for your full license.

@callak_9974 3 жыл бұрын
In Ontario, for a driver's license, there's the G1 (written test), G2 (city road test/parking) and full G (highway test). The G2 test can be booked 1 year after you get the G1, or 8 months if you went through a accredited driver's education program. The full G is a year after you've gotten the G2.

I remember being about 17, had my license since I turned 16 as well but I lost the first one and had to get a new one. Well back in the 80’s in Ohio when you got your license, you got it the same day (unlike here in California) well that fact got me out of a roll stop ticket, the cop thought I was a brand new driver and cut me a break.

So let the cop give a stack of tickets, ill just get them thrown out and have the officer embarrassed. Don't get me wrong, I support the police. But they need to do their job properly. And sitting silent is just empowering them to continue the bad behavior. My biggest thing is during a simple traffic stop them wanting to disarm me for "officer safety" um what about citizen safety? I got out on the road with my parents maybe 10 times and 3 weeks later I was at the DMV where I managed not to screw up the road test enough to not get my license. Fortunately I fully realized I then had a lot to learn about actual driving and didn't do anything overly stupid while doing so. Years back Georgia didn't have a temporary tag system for new cars, so for the first month or so you'd drive it with either no tag or a cardboard "tag" that was an ad for the dealer. If you got pulled over for no tag you'd just show a copy of the sales receipt. This worked fine in Georgia, as local LEOs knew the system, but a friend of mine got ticketed when he drove the car out of state, and the cop either didn't believe him or didn't care. (They've since fixed this and we now get temporary tags).

I once had to drive my 95 Trans Am across the Florida Everglades with no plate. I had ordered custom plates in 2011 when I moved to Florida and they issued me a 30 day temporary paper tag to use and said the plate would arrive in the mail a few weeks later. In Florida, the temp tag is a license plate sized piece of thick paper that goes in the normal plate area. It literally blew off somewhere in the middle of the Everglades while I was on a trip to fort lauderdale. I did the cardboard "lost plate": trick to get home. I was not pulled over on my way home but I legitimately lost my plate 2 hours away from home. I'm sure I would have been fine as I had the proper registration and insurance and could have proved the car was legal, but sometimes cars don't have plates for legitimate reasons and in my case I didn't even know I didn't have a plate for however long between when it blew off and when I got to fort Lauderdale.

A G1 licence is Ontario’s learner’s permit, which you receive after passing an eye exam and a written knowledge test. G1 licence restrictions include: You must always drive with a passenger who has been fully licensed for at least four years and who has a blood alcohol level of under .05. If the passenger is 21 or under, their blood-alcohol level must be zero. You must have a blood-alcohol level of zero. Every passenger must wear a seatbelt. You must not drive between midnight and 5 a.m. You may not drive on 400-series highways or expressways. "Failure to follow these rules is serious and can result in licence suspension," notes Anne Marie Thomas of InsuranceHotline.com. To finish the G1 phase and get your G2 licence, you must pass a road test of basic driving skills. You may take your first road test after 12 months of driving with the G1 licence. If you finish a government-approved driving course, you can take the test after just eight months.
