Great video, I am glad you did not reck but did a good job of capturing the ghost breaking. I am on my 2nd max g2 and have 71 miles with out any ghosting on hills going in excess of 26 mph maybe more. I have to say the max g2 really impressed me in your video.

Thanks! Yah it would have been an epic ride if the ghost braking didn’t happen, but other than that I was also impressed. Really smooth ride and no overheating. I didn’t think it would actually make it to the top. The ghost braking only happened when I crossed the max set in the app. As long as I maintained 20 or lower no issues. So seems somewhat avoidable and likely a non issue on flat ground. I’m going to send a clip to Segway. Seems like a simple fix with a firmware update. Glad to hear your new one is doing well. Maybe it’s something they fixed with newer batches.

New firmware update! Looking forward to your video about it!

I saw some details about it earlier today but the update hasn’t been pushed out to my device yet. Keeps telling me everything is up to date haha. I think they ramp their updates to 100% over a few days. Will see what it says in the morning.

so that aggresive braking is normal, since fully unlocked the max can go 40kmh/25mph on 36V, You probably exceeded that amount and the scooter motor would spin so fast and eventually break down. Thats why it happens. On aggresive downhill measure speed with gps and look at the speed so you wont go faster than 23mph/36kmh.
@tomsgadgetgarage

That’s good to know. Yah I’ve noticed that behavior between 24 and 26mph. Definitely takes your breath away when it happens lol, especially if you’re spacing out and don’t expect it haha.

I'd be worried if the Max G2 is struggling that much on a 7% hill. It makes me wonder if it is really capable of that 22% max hill climb advertised. Maybe the remaining charge makes a big difference since Rider Guide claimed to be able to climb a 10% hill for 200 feet at 10 mph.

So on a full charge it would likely traverse the steepest parts of that mountain much easier. I’m also 30 lbs heavier than the 165lb load they use to measure max slope, speed, etc. What’s also confusing is that scooter companies use degrees in their measurements whereas here in the US we use % grade on road signs. I did test the scooter on a steep parking garage ramp and it did well with about 34% battery remaining. With that being said, I reach the steepest part by those radio towers after 7+ miles of incline, so that may play a factor.

@@tomsgadgetgarage ah 7 miles of incline. That might explain it. I couldn't tell that you were on an incline for that long.

When the motor hits its max RPMs, the battery voltage and the voltage generated by the motor becomes equal. If any external factor (f.e. fair wind or slope) pushes the motor beyond it's physical speed limit, then the voltage it generates becomes higher than the battery voltage and the notorious regenerative braking occurs (until the motor and battery potentials equalizes again). Soon enough you'll be able to solve this issue by upgrading your G2 with a custom firmware and applying some magnetic field weakening.

Hmm, this is interesting. Wonder if a higher voltage battery, say 48v, would allow the scooter to “free wheel” down the steep slopes faster than it does with the 36v battery.
@grubost

@@tomsgadgetgarage yes, of course. The G2 motor has a ~19.75 rpm/v velocity constant (Kv), so its physical limit with a fully charged stock 10S battery is around 820 rpm (~37-38 km/h). For 13S (aka 48v) battery it should be at 38:10*13≈49 km/h

For indoor videos I use the Sony ZV-E10 here amzn.to/3QbmZcj and the standard kit lens it comes with. I tried using my GoPro Hero 10 for indoor stuff but the field of view was too wide and it sucked switching between indoor/outdoor settings all the time. For outdoor shots I use the GoPro Hero 10. For audio I use the RODE Wireless Go II microphone. I chose the version with 1 transmitter and 2 receivers as I don't need 2 transmitters. For lighting I use a super cheap setup from Amazon that you can find here: amzn.to/3Q0rExh. I believe multiple brands sell the same thing. For video editing I simply use iMovie. My videos aren't complex enough to justify Final Cut just yet. Other than that I just use random tripods and GoPro mounts for the videos. I will occasionally use a colored LED light in the background. This is the one I use specifically but there are tons of brands that sell similar versions at different price points amzn.to/3Fj4PPf.

Does setting regenerative breaking to weak make the battery last longer? I’m confused
@tomsgadgetgarage
@tomsgadgetgarage 8 ай бұрын
So regenerative braking is great for when you’re coasting and have your thumb off the throttle. It sends power back into the battery for a trickle charge. I initially kept it off because I wanted to simply use gravity and zoom down the mountain. I decided to set it to weak on my way down as my battery was dropping quick and I was unsure of the ability of the drum brake to effective slow me down. Strong mode is the only other option other than off and weak, but strong is a bit too much braking during coasting for my taste.

@@tomsgadgetgarage I just got my F2 Pro and I’ve noticed it does that too when going down hills it kinda slows down even when cruising at times. Not sure what it is exactly. It’s my first Segway scooter ever so not sure what to expect. I always see people say it goes so and so distance but I don’t get that much. Im also 240lbs but today I managed to get 24km distance here in Canada at 25kmph constant on Drive mode

Yah apparently “phantom braking” is an issue that’s been reported with electric cars as well. The scooter cuts off the throttle once you reach the max speed, but it feels like brakes are also applied in certain situations. When it first happened in the video it was out of nowhere and super abrupt. It’s almost as if the software woke up and realized I was going 26mph instead of the top speed of 22mph specified in the map.

what happen if you turn it off and just go downhill? still can stop but is it bad for the scooter?
@tomsgadgetgarage
@tomsgadgetgarage 7 ай бұрын
You know, I haven’t actually tried that. You’d be missing the electronic brake, brake lights, turn signals, horn, etc. I did run the battery all the way down on a range test and ended up using it manually/kicking. It sucked but it definitely got rolling.

this scooter has zero problems with hill climbing! Stop the scooter in the middle of a steep inclination, start it from zero speed, and it'll accelerate you to the max speed, in my case 25kmh. In all my uphill tests, the scooter didn't slow down from 25kmh!!
