I've been riding crotch rockets since 1989, I am always fully geared up. In 2005 I went down at 160MPH and if not for my gear my back, arms, & head would have ended me. I walked away w/ a giant hole around my knee. A coyote ran out in front of me on a turn and I instantly reacted just enough to throw off my angle which sent me off the side of the road, into a rail and 20+ yards down the highway. If you watch MotoGP or WSBK these guys are roaring well past certain speeds and if not for their gear would not have gotten up. Now I will admit, the adrenaline one feels going these speeds track or street is exhilarating, however, there has to be a balance between that fun and your safety. A helmet is never enough. I have seen people go down at under 30mph and w/o the right gear have road rash beyond comprehension. There is no substitution for the proper gear, fun aside.

Many countries don't regulate anything but a helmet. Here in Australia you can wear just shorts thongs & helmet. I don't say that with any malice, but you are seriously pushing your luck. In my opinion, there's a time and a place and that wasn't it. I've ridden at those speeds many times but not in that traffic and not because I was trying to keep up with another rider. And don't get me started on your gear. No gloves, no jacket, crap jeans. You'd have been skinned alive if you'd come off. I was shown hospital photos of people who'd come off with minimal clothing when I took my test and they were just that. When you've forked out 20K for the bike, who TF is stupid enough to not wear under 1k's worth of gear? And the gear above will definitely increase your chances of survival by a significant factor. It has saved me on 2 occasions at those sorts of speeds. Of course, if you hit something, your chances are reduced, but still not zero. Coming off at those speeds without the gear, you might survive, but you will definitely wish that you hadn't. In my country, when a bike meets another random bike and it always seems like a road rage 😂
@Radxcor83 Жыл бұрын
I had to visit a family member in the ER once and the lady in the bed next to was drunkenly shrieking in pain. My family member told me she had been in a motorcycle accident and had only been wearing a helmet, tank top and shorts and that her road rash was so bad they were second and third degree burns. The nurses had given her the highest hit of morphine allowed and it didn't do shit for her pain. They were legitimately discussing if she needed to be placed in a coma. I still ride, but I'd be damned if you catch me slacking on the protective gear.

Lane splitting at 140. If someone checked their mirror before a lane change and didn't see you, you'd be on them before they could react. Stupid is as stupid does.

Yes, you can. It's called self control, and young fast bike riders get to be old fast bike riders by using it. You can be fast or slow, young or old, but you don't get to be fast and old unless you learn some self control. I know that when you're young you don't think that getting old is all that important, I know I didn't. What saved me wasn't the thought of getting old, it was the thought of being left in a wheelchair, or having my skin ripped off. This guy seems to be oblivious of the pain that a road surface can do, but try holding your hand against a grinding wheel for 5 seconds, see how much you can stand it. Now imagine having that happen to your ENTIRE body. If you survive the experience, you'll wish that you hadn't. One of the most important things that I learned while riding is to never ride beyond a speed that you are comfortable with.
