So glad you mentioned transitioning from grabbing pots by name and just going with the color you need and blending homebrew mixes. I've started doing this as well and it's been incredibly liberating. I know it seems pretty obvious but I think a lot of new painters to the hobby tend to get stuck on the label.
I love the vibe you gave to that mini. The dark brown wash/removal just blew my mind.

Damn man, that last bit about putting your favorite model on a pedestal for, “one day”, is soul crushingly true. Lion El’Jonson is still sleeping in the packaging since I’m not entirely confident in my battle ready models. I’ll have a crack at him, the only person I want to be proud of my painting is my wife anyway.
@davidwilliams32443 жыл бұрын
One thing I think would make this model stand out a lot more, is using the washes in only specific areas with dark recesses. Even when removing it from other areas with the makeup sponges it really mutes all the beautiful blend work and color transitions you did. I know you focus for the piece was him in a grimdark environment but most dirt/dust/grime doesn't settle equally over armor/items. It has weight and usually goes to the lowest points(where recesses and shadows would be) with splotching in certain parts with mud/oil type mediums. Overall incredible work on this. A good reference for this is look at factory and forge workers and see where soot and metal shaving land on their clothing/tools.

I think this is the most I have learned from a single painting video. All of your techniques are different than what I have been doing. It's really inspiring and liberating to take away that I could go COMPLETELY off the rails of what I have learned and still come out with something awesome.

Great content. I think for most of us newer and less experienced painters this level of painting and time investment is exactly what we’re hoping for. It doesn’t take forever but it looks really good and makes a great addition to our shelf of glory or at the head of our miniature army. I think you really nailed the balance between a good paint job to be proud of and also not taking so long to do it that you work harder on finding excuses than actually painting. As someone who devotes more of my hobby time to becoming a better sculptor, I like the idea that I can still bring my sculptures to life with some color and make it look great without spending too much time away from actually sculpting. (Also great tip about the enamel washes)

Just listened to your podcast with Scott and your problem with the airbrush cleaning. Have you tried an ultrasonic bath? You don’t even need to strip the whole thing down, just loosen the needle and take the back of so it fits in the Bath. Clean for a few minutes and it loosens all the dried paint, airbrush is good as new 💖

I don't know what it is about it, but that intro... It always brings a smile to my lips. Your face when you spin. :D Been watching you, Scott and Brent for a long time now, and finally painted my first minis this weekend. A set of three orcs from Reaper Bones. Pretty psyched! Started out with a CW-beginner set, but pretty much ordered a vallejo set after the first painting session. Thickness of the CW-bottles was all over the place, and I found myself really wanting dropper bottles for my home made wet pallete. I think the three of you bring an extreme amount of positivity, encouragement and tutorials for painters of all skill-levels. The collabs are also amazing. Keep slaying the gray!

Hey Jon. I recently got back into 40k after having started some Fyreslayers for AoS last year. Been into Warhammer since I was a kid but life sort of had other plans for quite awhile. I wound up starting Death Guard and was super excited to get started, knocking out Typhus and some Poxwalkers. With this newfound confidence, I was ready to take on Mortarion. Unfortunately, depression, PTSD (from the military), and anxiety have been beating me up hard for the past week. It has been quite rough to say the least. Given that, I started losing all happiness and joy out of everything I was doing. Amongst a myriad of other issues that put me in a really negative place. Today I sat around and watched KZbin all day and finally mustered the drive to start basing and priming. I grabbed an energy drink and got started at around 1130pm. It's now 4am. I'm done with his armor and I'm ready to move on to the rest of the model. I wanted to say thank you. So much. You are one of the kindest KZbinrs making miniature content. Every video I watched tonight I heard you say uplifting things about not being good enough to do a model, to how to get better, to how your paint scheme doesn't suck, and even that it's ok to paint slow as hell (I do). Your videos have been my motivation, and my drive, for the past 4 hours now. And I'm excited to get up tomorrow and work on Morty some more. Again, thank you man. Thanks for what you do. And thank you for the content and thoughtfulness in your videos. It means a hell of a lot, and motivates me to slay the grey. Take care buddy. God speed on your painting journey.
