Thank you for sharing your perspective on the distinction between martial arts designed for the battlefield and those meant for sport or competition. It's true that many people may not be aware of the differences between these types of martial arts. Martial arts that were originally designed for the battlefield often have a different focus and approach than those intended for sport or competition. They may emphasize practical techniques for survival and self-defense in a combat situation, while sporting martial arts may prioritize scoring points or achieving victory in a specific format of competition. That being said, many martial arts have evolved over time to incorporate both practical and sporting elements. For example, some martial arts like Muay Thai or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu have a long history of being used in combat but have also developed sport-specific rules and techniques for competition. It's important to recognize the origins and intentions of different martial arts while also appreciating how they have evolved and adapted over time. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this topic!

Martial arts for combat still has to assume your opponent isn't unskilled. Bujinkan methods are not suited for skilled opponents. If it was for real combat, like todays modern military. physical conditioning would be a major priority, and so would resistance and sparring of some sort.

Actually a good description of the art, well put. One teacher once said "If it doesn't work against anyone, it's shit. A Judo man will throw you before you can blink, a Thai will kick you in half, are you confident, are you training thát way? That about summed it up for me

@sirseigan Жыл бұрын
Have you felt the pressure of being attacked by a real sharp katana? I have. Have you felt the stress of wounding your friend with a real sharp katana when attacking? I have. I can only speak from my experince within Bujinkan over 30 years. As you see from above I have trained with real sharp weapons (not only swords but knifes and other bladed wrapons as well) - and that demands control and is sacry as f. It creates stress and pressure I can tell you that. Even just training with an ordinary steel blade, like a utility knife, with a blunted edge and rounded point, make it feel different then with and attrap you can find. Besides from that, almost every training we had ground grappling (or rolling as the cool kids in BJJ say) as part of the warm up. However several limitations that can be found in for example Judo was not there, and several "dirty tricks" were added. This has also been done in total darkness to higlight the tactile part of it or giving it a caviate by throwing in a hidden weapon like a knife or shuriken in the mix. Very often we also had standing striking sparring with strict limitations. At times it were only low kicks to the tigh (outside as well as inside). At other times it were striking on shulders and upper arms. Sometimes these two were combined. This was done without protection in a playfull manner with reduced impact force but at full speed, so control was demanded. A few times we had standing grappling randori but it was not very common. More common was a type of flow training with full out attacks and defenses, totally random, but at reduced and even speed and force of impact (to save your buddy). The higher grade the higher speed. Even this was done without any protection and the goal was not to beat the crap out of the other but train flow of movement - and have fun. We also trained with shinai in all out duels. Even other padded weapons like staffs, spears and naginatas were used. Even this was done without any protection. Sometimes headstrikes were allowed, sometimes not. With padded weapons this were att full speed and with full force. However the ruleset was a point system and ko was not part of it. A common training method is to put one person in a ring of others. And the one, or several, persons in the ring attacks the person in the middle who has to defend. Sometimes it is a certain order and limited to one attacker doing one attack. Other times it is several random attackers, with random weapons, that continue to attack until they are on the ground or the attacked is pinned down. It all comes down to the level of skills in the group. The main theme though is to not give the one in the middle any breathing room, but not attacking all at once. The objective is to stress the one in the middle while continusly keeping up the pressure on the edge of their capability. What that level are is highly individual. Another "pressure" training that is common is to define a combination of attacks - lets say two high punches, a kick and then a grab in the collar and another punch (or whatever it might be). The defense is random and needs to be done before the end of the attacking combo has come to an end. So the defender need to avoid, disrupt, turn the tide and take down. Sometimes a specific principle should be used (or a range of several principals to choose from), sometimes not. The attacks are done at full speed and at full force even though it is understood that soften the blow is appriciated if the other are not able to avoid in time (so training with mutal respect). The general rule is that as hard as you give you got to be ready to receive - and we do not want to see serious injuries or sadistic stuff. This is done without and protection so it can hurt so mutal respect is demanded - be a good sport. This training can spring from a fixed technique in the begining, and the endless amount of variations (henka) on that - or a flow from that start into a multitude of other techniques. But it can be as random as I described above. Another, quite traditional training method is to start with a fixed technique and takedown, then do a counter on the defence (at time called "ura waza". Then a counter on the counter to the defence. And then continue like that into long sequences of counters on counters. Each attack, defence and counter needs to be done fullheartedly in order for it to work. After a while the notion of "who's turn" it was to do the finnishing move goes straight out the window and it basically breaks down to some sort of "structured randori". Throw in the allowense for variations of each counter into the mix and it certainly does so. This training quickly becomes messy, in a good way. It is different to train techniques and training flow. It is even different to train a technique in detail and train free variations on that. Most people ever see of Bujinkan is tge über detailed technique training and not the other parts. Bujinkan is so much more. Perhaps the several dojos I have trained in has been exceptions - I do not know - but to me Bujinkan have plenty of pressure testing, just not competition and full contact sparring (without protection and gloves it still hurts). So lets just say that I do not recognize my self in the critic...

Correct, however there are actually 9 schools, with the unspoken option to learn from other school of martial arts. One cannot understand ninjutsu without understanding the animistic perspective that provides its philosophy, as it is effectively weaponized taoism or Shintoism. I have served in the US army, served time in prison and live in a bad neighborhood; Bujinkan has saved my life numerous occasions. As we say fighting is 90% spiritual and 10% physical. The last time I had to physically confront someone was a year ago, and that was because I chose to be aggressive against a bully on a commuter train and bounced him off the wall of the train without hurting him. I am now a little old man 5' 2" 130 lbs and no one messes with me anymore because of my calmness and genuine lack of fear. I started studying with the shadows of Iga ninja society back in 1983, and have only a handful of years of formal training. My personal Taijitsu is, primarily, blended with Jeet kune do and Apache warrior ways of my father's lineage.

I honestly don't know what to think of it. I don't know if this is like real fighting that Shinobi used in fudal japan or just made up or watered down version. If it is real then it is interesting especially in terms of use of weapons of the era such as katana, staff, spear, shiruken and so on. I'm not so sure about hand to hand combat even if it is accurate for ninja hand to hand combat most likely came second after weapon training and their skills most likely were not as advanced as modern UFC fighter but I'm pretty sure they would be effective against someone untrained even if this person was strong and athletic. also if fight happened in place where there are things laying around that can be used as improvised weapons like glass bottles, frying pens and ropes and kitchen knives real ninja would be hard to beat by anyone. but once again we really know very little about real shinobi and what their actual combat systems were. I don't know if they had any specific type of hand to hand combat training unique to them but maybe they did. (although I doubt that anyone in modern times truly knows what it was) but their focus most likely was weapon training and that is what they excelled in.

Ive done martial arts all my life and this is BS. You would have trouble defending yourself against a 600ib woman in a mobility scooter. In real fighting their is no place for locks, throws and floor fighting as you will just get knifed, gouged, bitten, or attacked by the victims friends. Key to real life fighting is distance, simplicity and speed and hard and fast strikes to the weakest areas of the human body. Bruce Lee knew that that's why his stuff was good. simple punch in the face and a few kicks.

Is true, as MMA appeared it obliterated all other martial arts alltogether. The amount of savage contained in MMA discouraged all other martial arts practitioners to continue further. That is the pinacle of shit that it can be. Where it will continue from there we don't know. I imagine how martial arts were before MMA. A pleasant form to practice those skills. You never thought of hurting badly your opponent. It was like a win-win partnership most of the time. In wu-shu when the partner was down you never attacked him there. Fight was over because he was down. Now with the MMA spectrum above your head, practitioners are less and less because there is not so much beauty in the martial arts. Sad but true.
