Mario game by Nintendo.
Mario (and that green guy) flies...the girl named after a fruit gets kidnapped (again) by a giant...turtle...thingy's...kids? Mario (and that green guy) go on yet another adventure.
Still plays like the past NSMB games. This one includes LOTS and LOTS o' coins, a Golden Fireflower (which is overpowered), and the Super-friggin'-Leaf! Unlike 3D Land, this one gives Mario and Luigi the ears and tail and the P-Meter!
This longplay goes for 5 Glittering Stars, so that pretty much means 100%. Some fails here and there and also some inconsistencies (total coin count.). I also try to abuse flying.

we've been reuploading a lot of older longplays at higher resolution to take advantage of better bitrate on youtube. a lot of our older stuff was uploaded at original resolution being 480p or smaller. thus youtube compression makes them look like garbage

I have 2 questions. What does 3 crowns for your life count mean? And how can you play as Mario without his hat in this game?

The Crowns on your life count mean you've gone over the 999 lives count, and it's a reference to Super Mario 3D Land. You'll have to do it to get your 5th star for your save file. It's also what allows you to play as capless Mario/Luigi. It's really grindy though, so good luck! You can watch some guides online on how to get lots of lives fast. I recommend, though, one I saw from YTSunny the other day on the video where he maxes his coin counter using a strategy in world 3-4.
