Eh, I remember watching this trailer over and over on my school issued laptop. I was so excited and oblivious to the changes that were evident even in this trailer. I remember literally thinking as I watched Mario kill Goombas "I can't wait to see the new villain!" The trailer I really want to see is the 2010 one that only had a short off screen clip of a 3DS shown... THAT one is the one that had the Chomp partner and apparently a world inspired by the N64 game rather than the NSMB series.

I'd make the case that Color Splash is going to be Paper Mario: Revenge of the Sith and that Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam is PM:AotC. It's the sixth game to have Paper Mario as a main character, it has the best visuals (though I still prefer the art style of the original PM trilogy), and it seems to have gained the massive group of followers. The only part that doesn't quite line up is that M&L:PM is liked by tons of people, but I'll figure something out.

Yeah, I noticed all of this. The fourth also introduces an annoying side character that no one likes (Kersti and Jar Jar, of which I hate Kersti more, honestly.) I don't know if the NX will have a Paper Mario of its own, since the director said the future of the series depends solely on them thinking up a new paper gimmick. If it was a return to form, I'd call that one the Clone Wars (series, not movie) of the bunch.

Back when the series was gonna go back to it's roots. until Miyamoto came and ruined everything. If he gave the original idea for Stickerstar a second chance, we wouldn't have so many angry fans bashing this game and Colorsplash.

Miyamoto didn't really ruin much of anything... A lot of design choices were Intelligent System's fault. Just toads, consumable attacks, not that much story. All miyamoto wanted them to do was make something different with mario world characters and, clearly, they failed at making it that good for a lot of people.

The crippeld motion controls that he forces players to use instead of making them optional. that alone is the reason why it's the worst selling game in the series. Plus it doesn't have multiplayer, barely any replay value, it's a slight remake of 64 which isn't necessary because they remade it on the 3DS as a launch title and it comes off as outdated to most people. don't get me wrong, I like Miyamoto. He's done great things for Nintendo. but his glory days are over and his meddling and inavation has done nothing but hurt games in both gameplay and sales in recent years. the guy needs to retire.

You could just get it from blocks, but that's just slow. Even the goal requires you to defeat baddies to get more coins. The music for the trailer is adorable. It brings me and my brother way back to those Super Nintendo and N64 games, like Yoshi's Story for example. Very nostalgic. I would love to purchase the 3DS for this, Zelda Ocarina of Time, and any Pokemon games only. Lovely trailer.

This game made me happy to be a Paper Mario fan. Everything about it made me think about what it was trying to show me rather than what I was expecting out of it. And what it showed was a seed. A seed of passionate developers who wanted to make Paper Mario fun in its own unique ways, from Stickers, to Paint, and now Origami. Cleaver ideas, clever puzzles, clever writing, and clever gameplay! Thank you, Paper Mario: Sticker Star. You made me not relive the days of Paper Mario 64, but you also made unique chances to the series that I was interested in knowing what else can Intelligent Systems do for paper gimmicks! C:

i mean maybe people wouldve tolerated it more. i dont think just stripping it of the paper mario thing wouldve made the atrocious gameplay and obtuse boss battles any better. and frankly when looking across the rest of the mario rpg games this one just doesnt fit at all, so i dont think it wouldve been that well recieved regardless. though i do agree they shouldve done away with the paper mario name from these dumb craft games (but also shouldve made them better than they are).

Oh get over it. Really, I understand that everybody hates Paper Mario Sticker Star because it's "different". (Video Game Racism) I don't think the game is bad though. They just tried some new mechanics, and as a stand-alone title I think it's pretty good. So what if it doesn't fit up to the previous games? And guess what, they probably won't make another Paper Mario game for about 3 years so I'd just deal with what you got. If it says anything, the graphics actually look paper-like, unlike a lot of the previous titles. I believe that deserves SOME merit.

Many years ago, there was a Mario RPG spinoff to the Super Mario Bros. franchise by Nintendo. Its name was Paper Mario (or Mario Story for the first game if you lived in Japan). Many people, including myself, were taken in by its simple yet furbished & mostly refined gameplay, unique characters, unusual look, unorthodox storylines (chapter and gamelong- big and small need each other, after all), and chuckle-inducing writing. Unfortunately, after Super Paper Mario in 2007, something bad happened to the series. Namely, its identity- from basic staples to defining characteristics- was stripped away from it. Instead of many visually different named NPCs of many different species, there were only generic six colored adult male Toads. Instead of an engaging explicit story for every chapter and the game overall, only World 3 and a single level in World 4 had anything resembling such. Instead of the storybook look adding to the timelessness, the many Toads and even other characters explicitly brought up the paper style, undermining the impact of many moments and in place of actual jokes. Instead of a fair challenge, even basic information for playing the game was withheld, and clues for obstacles (most involving one-use Things) were given too late or never given at all. And instead of a gameplay experience made for modern days, the mechanics were more akin to an NES era game, with the most outdated of ways to “pick” a target (the exact move on the exact enemy in the exact order), infuriatingly strict trial and error gameplay, the helper character Kersti not actually offering hints most of the time, even when asked with her dedicated button (on top of being an awful character), and little quality of life in general. Not helping this was the huge flaw of the game’s components not “flowing” into each other in a way that made them all undeniably contribute (battling offers no unique reward type, making fights with non-boss enemies and non-story enemies completely skippable). This is referring, of course, to the infamous 2012’s Paper Mario Sticker Star for Nintendo 3DS. At first, it was thought to be the fault of Super Mario franchise creator Shigeru Miyamoto forcing his views on the development team. It was also thought there was miscommunication and a misunderstanding of some dubious surveys for Super Paper Mario. Unfortunately, even 4 years later, many of the unpopular traits of Sticker Star stuck around for the Nintendo Wii U game Paper Mario: Color Splash. When Color Splash was released for the Wii U console, many of the problems from Sticker Star had not been fixed. In fact, Color Splash (and by extension, the creative team) seemed to twistedly celebrate the fact they hadn’t really fixed anything wrong with the previous game. From the nameless Toads themselves now mentioning how there were only Toads as friendly NPCs local to the setting of Prism Island, to the paper jokes now being forced to the point they actually made no sense even in context, to the game making Replicas (extra Things) useless for boss weaknesses and actually mocking the player for it (when the developers themselves programmed it in), to the producers actually shafting the blame onto the contingent Mario & Luigi/Mario & Luigi RPG series for why Paper Mario isn’t an RPG anymore (when this wasn’t a problem years ago, and isn't a problem)… Rather tellingly, despite using the Super Paper Mario surveys as the reason for the changes, the producers have mentioned they jumped right from Sticker Star to Color Splash, with no mention of the Club Nintendo surveys for Sticker Star. Also rather tellingly, even though Kensuke Tanabe says he went to Shigeru Miyamoto because “Mario wasn’t the producer’s intellectual property”, the simple fact Nintendo gave the producer the Color Splash project at all indicates this wasn’t a problem for the higher ups. Basically, the current creative team for Paper Mario (producer Kensuke Tanabe, co-producer Risa Tabata, and writer Taro Kudo, as well as whoever the current head game designer is), are what’s wrong with the current Paper Mario franchise. They refuse to really improve their ways, and don’t really appear to embrace or emphasize quality of life design choices (as seen with their mockery of Replicas). Therefore, in order to have a chance of restoring the Paper Mario series to its prime and regaining its full identity and respect, I are asking you, the reader and Mario fan (not just Paper Mario fan) to ask Nintendo alongside me to replace the producer, co-producer, writer and game designer with other, more proven Nintendo employees. This is not to have the people currently in those positions fired, especially as Japanese culture is averse to the idea of firing people- just relocated and switched out with other employees. As for who in particular could sub in for at least one of these positions, there are a few candidates. The first choice, of course, would be to reassign former director Ryota Kawade from his position in the Fire Emblem trading card game (from what recent research tells me) back in charge of Paper Mario. If Mr. Kawade is not willing to return to Paper Mario for whatever reason, there is another choice in mind- Yoshiaki Koizumi, the Assistant director of Super Mario 64, the director of Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy, the producer for Super Mario Odyssey and the Nintendo Switch console/handheld hybrid. The reason for this nomination of Mr. Koizumi’s tutelage over Paper Mario is simple- his work on Super Mario Galaxy, as well as its sequel, indicates he is incredibly creative in adding completely new characters while giving old ones a spin. In addition, several aspects of Super Mario Galaxy and his later games, from Bowser’s speech patterns to the Grand Stars as collectibles and the font, are reminiscent of Paper Mario. Finally, even when Shigeru Miyamoto enacted a “storyline minimism” clause similar to Sticker Star, Mr. Koizumi still kept the characters and style he enacted. This also applies to Yoshiaki Koizumi’s pupils and students. Therefore, if Yoshiaki Koizumi and his team replaced Kensuke Tanabe and his team for Paper Mario (preferably after Super Mario Odyssey is released and/or finished), there is good faith he would provide a closer experience to the original Ryota Kawade trilogy, original formula or not. Even if Mr. Koizumi were forced to creative restrictions and couldn’t negotiate or migitate them, we at least wouldn’t see so many Toads, and would have a much more diverse cast. And even if not Kawade or Koizumi themselves, someone who thinks like them (young, fresh, assertive) and isn't one of the current crew would suffice in replacing the current "problem members".

I feel sticker stars gameplay had potential, if we had basic attacks, like in 64 or ttyd, and the stickeds could upgrade attacks, say your fighting a spiky enemy that can fly, you cant use your hammer because its airborne, so you apply a hammer sticker to your jump and bam, your jump now negates the spikes. Feel free to point out flaws i am betting i made thousands of contradictions i only recently finished ttyd

I respect Miyamoto from a gameplay designer standpoint but his glory days are over because of his unhealthy obsession with forced motion controls and gimmicks instead of actual innovation that fits the series they are put into, and his beliefs on storytelling are pretty much objectively wrong since he thought that Rosalina's story in Galaxy actually hurt the game when it was completely optional. Depth is never a bad thing, and while the platformers don't need to have some grand epic story, they should at least try to outdue themselves in plot and characters like they try to in gameplay. Story is not something that Mario should not have and Miyamoto's thought process behind not having Rosalina be a prominent character in Galaxy 2 (To the point that he fist pumped that he got the game to have less story...seriously that's not something to be proud of) and him thinking an RPG is fine without a story or without interesting unique characters is just objectively wrong. Gameplay's one of the most important aspects of a game but in this day and age story is just as important and should be given a great amount of focus as well. Even something like Sunshine feels refreshing and original because the story has more to it than what Mario games usually have. Mario may not need an in depth story to be a fun series, but it certainly would make many player's enjoyment far greater if there were more story focused Mario games with unique and well written characters even if it's completely optional like Rosalina's was. But in a Mario Story game (because that's the real title for the series even if they've forgotten that) there needs to be an in depth and dramatic story with actual emotion and character to it as well as bigger stakes and better reasons for Peach being kidnapped than she likes cake and is taken because of it being thrown on her.

If you want a story, watch a movie. This is a game. I don't want the game to be interrupted every 5 minutes to read bad dialogs. Mario needs drama, character, emotion? Give me a break! What's next: Tetris and Pong need a "grand, epic" story? This is one of the things Miyamoto still does right, so let's not give him bad advice. Focus on (mediocre) "story" has already ruined Metroid and made Zelda lame, so at least spare poor Mario.

Granted, the game was good on its own, it wasn't a Paper Mario game. Paper Mario is an RPG series with exp, partners, and a compelling story. What fans want is a real Paper Mario. I think that Sticker Star and Color Splash are at the least average games, but they shouldn't have replaced Paper Mario.

there is only one town with NPC's to explore and talk to, Kammy Koopa is absent yet again, Bowser who was the funniest character in the previous games doesn't get a single line of dialog (he can talk and he talks alot in the previous games and even in the 3D games), coins only exist to buy more stickers which you can find on the cheap in the open which defeats the purpose of a shop, the jump and hammer commands are stickers now and not regular actions, and the game is just like a NSMB game.

I agree. Many people have abandoned the Wii and even though I'm a true Sony fan at heart and not to sound fanboyish but I've never bought a Wii. Never needed one. But Nintendo will keep the DS going for years to come.
