I think the greatest vindication of "school yard rumours" is how it ended up being true that you could get Mew in the original Pokemon blue/red. That being said, it was a glitch exploit as opposed to being intentionally programmed into the game. But the method for exploiting the glitch reads EXACTLY like the kind of nonsense you'd hear back then.
@ciel872 жыл бұрын
Yes, there was also an "virus" or "glitch" pokemon fight to enter. I think it was near the Mew location or it was the same one. The enemy looked exactly like a digital glitch (sounded like that too). I don't remember the name ... But you could raise up your amount of berry's(?) to improve certain stats of your pokemon. I don't remember that good... (Eh, around 20 years or more since that time) Edit: It was called "Missingno"

Mew wasn't an exploit, they were actually coded into the game fully of course―only the glitchy method of obtaining them was unintended. I think doing a video on non-Luigi rumors in Mario 64 could be interesting. I remember one time one of my cousins or someone telling me that Dorrie in Hazy Maze Cave can eat you if you ground pound her back and swim to her mouth. While it was an easily disputed rumor, I was too scared to try it and just took them on their word. I also remember one where when you first enter Peach's castle, if you somehow move the camera a certain way, you can see Bowser carrying Peach through the first star door. There are also other fairly popular ones like a secret level in the big painting before Bowser 1. A secret boss fight with Bowser in the castle. Killing the piano in Big Boo's Haunt. Riding Yoshi. Finding the Yellow Cap Switch. And of course the 121st power star.

I remember hearing the Obelisk rumor for Ocarina of Time. Another one I heard and attempted involved throwing a bomb into the center of the lava pool beneath Ganon's castle, since the lava was in a circular pool with a dark spot in the middle. I can't remember what this supposedly unlocked, though. Other rumors I heard about were for the Mega Man Battle Network series for GBA. Rumors about boss battles that didn't exist, fed by scraps of circumstantial instances that served as "evidence". 3 characters in particular were rumored to be fightable in Battle Network 3, those being Glyde, Roll, and Zero.EXE. Glyde was a recurring NPC who, in the story, DOES fight, and in other media like the anime adaptation had an arsenal of powerful (and expensive) weapons, but he strangely is never an opponent you can face. Roll had a bit more credence to her rumor, as she DID possess an in-battle sprite for her Summon Battle Chip, where she attacks the enemy for you, and this sprite was used in one of thr spinoff games where she was playable. She wouldn't have a boss battle until the 4th game, however. As for Zero.EXE, this comes from a number of places. There are references to the character Zero from the Mega Man X and Mega Man Zero series scattered in the game, like a poster of him on a wall in a store, a welcome mat in a house with the Mega Man Zero title screen logo on it, and the fact that Mega Man Network Transmission for Gamecube, which came out close to the same time, featured Zero as a prominent character. To make matters worse, the North American version of the Instruction Manual for Battle Network 3 goofed up and featured art from Network Transmission, which INCLUDED Zero.EXE, so people thought he was in the game. But, outside a passing mention in the Japanese version of Battle Network 6 in the post-game, Zero.EXE only fully appears in the Gamecube spinoff. It's fun to look back on these rumors of yesteryear, and reminisce fondly of more imaginative times.

I remember when I got the Gold PP7 in "GoldenEye 007", and I was a little bit disappointed for a brief moment that it didn't look like the Golden Gun. God I remember so much of these. So many early 3D games had this air of mystery with either inaccessible areas, areas like the Haunted Wasteland, the one area just left in GoldenEye, etc.
@Sauraen2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for covering Triforce%! One of the many purposes behind our project was to make the urban legends about the Triforce become true--not just show them on screen. There indeed did end up being some crazy set of in-game actions that would let you get the Triforce--that set of in-game actions is the ACE setup, and then injecting the data for the Triforce scene through controller input. For now this "crazy set of in-game actions" requires TAS, but there's theoretically a way to do it RTA: use ACE to disable the file select screen name length limit of 8 characters, then start typing in a very long filename that overwrites a bunch of memory. The player could use this to write in the code for an on-screen hex editor, and then use it and spend hours manually entering the data for the Triforce scene. We might work on this for some future GDQ.

One thing I can add about the Hunting Knife - on the Surface levels the game will spawn guards at a different rate depending on the weapon that Bond is holding (which is one of the reasons speedrunners swap to the mine at the start of S2, as it yields the lowest chance of spawning in guards). One of the weapons that the scripts check for is to see if the Hunting Knives are equipped, which suggests that the Hunting Knives were originally going to be found on Surface 1 prior to being removed from the final cut. The other weapons that the game checks for are the Throwing Knives, PP7, PP7 Silenced, Sniper Rifle, Klobb, Grenade Launcher, and KF7 which can all be found on Surface 1, barring the Throwing Knives and PP7. The exact same weapon checks play out on Surface 2 , which suggests that the script was C&Ped over from S1; there are no checks to see if Bond is holding a Mine (which means that the Hunting Knives were probably not intended for S2 even though the script checks for them)

I once read that in the N64 game Body Harvest there was a way to unlock another Time period, taking place in Turkey in twenty-twenty something. All you would have to do is clear the game in Hero Difficulty and not let a single human die in all other time periods. The game locks you out of the final Level if you play on the easy difficulty, so there being more Levels didn't seem too far fetched. It was grueling to not let a single man die to the Aliens or accidently kill one yourself, and the controls don't make it any easier either. Of course it was just a hoax, and I don't know why I thought there would be another Level after wiping out the alien threat. But at least I still have that perfect save file lying around somewhere.

Nude raider was a semi real code. It was spread as real enough for them to take the most common sequence and then have that make her gib in the second game. I think thats also why you can lock the butler in the walk in freezer though

I was so glad for those last five myths, thank you to the somewhat worringly-named "Butcher" for sending that email. After the fifth main myth entry I was like "aww, the video's over already? I want more!" I got more, and I am appreciative of that. Great video, so fun to go back and revisit some of these myths and playground rumours I heard as a kid. I genuinely think that those of us who grew up in that era, with N64s but just before truly widespread internet usage, had a really unique experience with this type of stuff. I have no doubt that most of those rumours came from various websites and forums that lacked real authentication systems, allowing these false but compelling claims to propagate, spreading like a game of video game secrets telephone, changing slightly with each iteration, but generally maintaining an appearance of believability. And let's be honest, even if the vast majority of them ended up being downright false, they tended to be really fun to explore and try out. It added an additional method of interacting with out favourite games, attempting to reach, achieve or earn or experience various things that were rumoured to be in the game, but wouldn't appear during a normal playthrough. Essentially resulting in us getting to spend more time with these fantastic games that we might have otherwise missed, and there's a decent chance it helped at least some of us learn more about these games for future gameplay. Great video, thanks for the trip down memory lane. I hope to see more like these in the future!

I remember seeing that Marty Hoax video when it was less than a few months old. I nearly crapped my little kid pants thinking such a thing was possible (of course I was to naive to look at the upload date) and spent weeks trying to do the same thing. Only ever reaching the second step and kicking myself over my lack of skill. It's one of my more bitter sweet N64 memories. And I'm glad we finally got to play as him in a hack later as it felt like a sort of reward for my efforts as a kid. There's a part of my that wishes there was a community of romhackers who added all these insane theories to make them a reality. Like what if we created unique models and efforts to make Unicorn Fountain in OoC a reality? It would be a really neat thing to add if not ultimately a novel idea. It just feels like making your imagination you had for the games a reality, that the games were more deep than they really were. I always like the idea that sometimes a game has insanely hidden secrets. Stuff that can't even be found by people who can literally tear open the games code. It's just one of those concepts I wish developers could somehow implement.

The big rumor I remember hearing as a kid was: this other dude in my class in 4th grade told me that in A Link to the Past, there was a way to parachute off the back of Death Mountain to find a "shadow land." I had the game and I tried for hours. I thought maybe my game was broken so I rented another copy and started all over to try again just to be extremely disappointed 😩
@TheMAZZTer2 жыл бұрын
Regarding missing Goldeneye single player characters... the multiplayer was a last-minute addition, right? So it makes sense the models were repurposed and not created specifically for that mode. Given they appear in the game credits it's possible they were made for more bonus single player levels that were never finished or shipped.

In the Banjo-Kazooie community we had a phrase, "Beak Bomb It". Just Beak Bomb everything. Maybe a door will open. Who knows. In hindsight, once Rare Witch Project found all the Stop n' Swop codes, there was no need to Beak Bomb random stuff anymore.

@@chompythebeast I mean, and he was green. This one happened in a PSone game but I think it falls in the umbrella of Urban Legend/Myth, the only difference is that this one was true. My friend who lived far away from me had the game Digimon Rumble Arena for the PSone, and everytime our parents met in his house we would play the game for hours. Sometimes the neighbour kids joined us and we played winner stays on. It was lots of fun. Anyway, we thought it was impossible for two people to use the same digimon, so we always had to swap amongst ourselves, sometimes getting mad because someone was using the strongest one and we had to go with the second strongest. I only had access to internet at school, and we were forbidden to use the computers for anything else other than school work, but one day I secretly searched a cheat code to enable us to use the same digimon in the fights, and I found it! Apparently you just had to press SELECT+X when selecting the fighter and we could play with the same Digimon. I waited weeks to meet up with him, and 1 month later I went to his birthday party. We tried to press SELEC+X and IT WORKED. We spent the rest of the day playing with the other guests and I remember I had to be dragged out of the TV by my parents when they wanted to leave.

About Star Fox 64: I remember "one mithy" about the appearence of James McCloud in the alternative ending of Star Fox 64, when Andross trying to end with Fox by "auto destruction", but then, Fox was saved by the spirit of his father. But there was a lot of stories saying that, actually, James was not dead, but trap in a differente dimension who was temporarily "free" during the explosion, free enough to save his son and get back to this alternative dimension. And the passage to this dimension was the result of the fight between James and Andross, when James was not really dead, but captured and transported to another time and place. This blow my mind when I was young!

Here's one that I've never heard about or seen anyone discuss. This guy at my elementary school, Ben, told me that in the forest temple in ocarina of time, there's a part where you have to go underground for like a minute or two, go through the passage, and then climb up a ladder at the very end. On the right side there's like a drainage ditch and on either end of the drainage ditch there are sewer grates. This guy told me that if you run back and forth in the drainage ditch long enough then alligators would come out and fight you. I spent about 2 hours trying this before finally giving up but this guy swore it was true

I've always wondered if there were rumors about a possible playable Skedar in Perfect Dark But I guess in vanilla PD, the closest to that is shooting the first Skedar in Attack Ship level with a Psychosis Gun, making it friendly towards you, which is interesting since other skedars do not turn friendly. I know Perfect Dark Plus exists, but the dying animation feels wrong 😅

The Triforce myth was so believable because the previous 3 Zelda Games had you collect pieces of the triforce, get an entire third of the triforce, or find the entire triforce at the end of the game. Logically it'd be expected for Zelda 4/OOT to follow suite.

Back in like 2000 when I was around 6 years old and playing Mario Kart 64 my older sister told me she 'heard' that if you have the effects of both a power star and boo's invisibility at the same time you can get through the doors and enter Peach's Castle in the Royal Raceway course. I actually Believed that but couldn't get lucky enough with the item blocks to get them both. Years later I thought she probably made that story up. 😅 As an adult I once decided to test it in 2 player mode just for fun, but turned out if you are under the effects of invisibility and steal a star and then press Z nothing happens (you stay invisible only and don't use up your star).

I love this topic of conversation, it reminds me so much of the N64 and GBC era, it's very nostalgic! One of the rumors I was obsessed with at the time was that there was a secret "Flying Tunic" in Ocarina of Time. Not sure how the other kids got this idea but they fed it into me and I wanted to get it so bad because flying over Hyrule would have been awesome. Link has a white tunic in Smash Bros so I thought that was possible indication that it was true. I remember Zelda rumors being so ubiquitous that our national Nintendo magazine made an article debunking them, I remember they specifically called out that temple of light rumor and even showed that same screenshot you showed in here and pretty much just called it all fake and told kids to not believe everything on the internet. Pokémon rumors were really crazy too, I remember all sorts of wild speculation about what was going to be in GS, I remember one kid told me that you would be able to crossbreed Pokémon to get new ones. All sorts of crazy ways to get Mew. It didn't help that some things like Missingno and "Pikablu" were real, so it was hard to know what to believe. I also had a similar experience to your Vulpix one but in Smash Bros, I somehow convinced myself that you could evolve Goldeen if you just did the right thing and Seaking would use a powerful attack like Horn Drill to make it all worth it. Of course I was wrong lol. And finally: One time one kid decided to make up a fake game to troll another kid and roped me into playing along. He fell for it lol I really miss those times, it was really something else not knowing what to believe and having to try things for yourself to solve mysteries on your own. Stuff like datamining is awesome but hampers that kind of fun atmosphere as well.
