I find it endlessly fascinating how Ashens has such an encyclopedic knowledge of stuff I've never heard of, yet has no knowledge of Early Nintendo stuff. I would have figured he'd have sat down and played these games by now.

I can see a Chinese dragon now that you mention it though my first impression was that it's a fleshy-coloured crescent moon face with white hair and a beard, although that's just from seeing it now. I swear I don't remember that Merlin logo at all and I'm only around 2 years older than Stuart Ashen. In Canada, from about the mid 1980s to early 1990s (re: the era when I paid attention to such things), most of the non-sports licensed property sticker albums that were sold in convenience stores were from Panini.

Marlins offices/production factory used to be a five minute bike ride from my house in Milton Keynes. Great memories of going down there with mates, album and £1 in hand, and being able to buy stickers. They’d always give us an extra packet each for free! We’d sit out the front with our albums filling them out and swapping stickers. Those were the days.,,

Snake Rattle & Roll! That was a RARE game! And it was all isometric, really cool but weird game. There was, indeed, a severed foot enemy. It was practically invicible too and real pain. I also remember when you landed in the water a shadow would start to stalk you with a riff on the JAWS theme playing.

Also, most of the screenshots look like the GBA ports of NES games where they removed half the pixels to make it fit but these stickers were released 10 years before those so that can’t be the source.

The screenshots appear to be cropped photos taken of TV screens running the games, possibly off of VHS recordings. They probably just settled for what they could get. Despite the quality, though, I'd still have been pleased with these as a kid for sure.

Thank you for uploading so many brilliant memories as a kid. This was the only album I completed as a kid and sadly it disintegrated a couple of years later. Now where are those FA football albums I use to have gone..... (PLAY GROUND MUTTER) Got got got need, that's a shiny that's worth 5 stickers. And the best part, when someone completed their album? They would get all the unwanted duplicate stickers, chuck them in the air and shout 'bundleeeeee' to look cool in front of the girls and everyone else will frantically chase after airborne stickers and fight over them. Great memories.

Ashen, you should check out Transformer: Earthrise. G1 characters with modern action figure engineering and transformations that aren't as complicated as unscrambling six Rubik's cubes simultaneously while juggling them. The new Optimus Prime is absolutely lush, and only really missing Roller.

Seriously, I have yet to see a completely completed sticker album, I know I never did, but that was not 'cos the other kids wouldn't swap, but most of the newsagents wouldn't stock the stickers and more often than not, the ones that you could find, you either got a double of one you already got or it wouldn't fit in the space in the album.

Looks like some sort of primitive direct capture getting screwed by the NES 240p resolution. Televisions are normally meant to send 480 lines of image in two frames, one being the odd field, and the other the even field and repeat etc.. But it's the picture generator itself that picks if it's an odd or even field, and all old consoles are programmed to just send one of the fields over and over while just letting the other lines go black (which you only can see if you have a bigass TV anyway). But as with modern televisions, their capture thingamabob was probably just guessing 480i, thus why you get the shitty combing/squishing etc..

My friend here in Sweden had these stickers back in middle school. If I remember correctly, there were some pictures / drawings in the album it self, that was sort of a blurry red mess. But when you put on the 'Special album "3D-glasses"', a whole new world open up, and you could see the hidden picture. Well, you could actually see the picture without those glasses, but it was alot harder.

I remember getting one of these kind of sticker packs once as a kid and never again. I remember crappy pictures and parts of pictures for something like $5. I think I even remember them being more like Stamps than stickers (whichever one I got), where you had to lick the backs to stick them... Really, after that it was making sure they were trading cards before buying those kinds of things. Turned me off stickers for life!

I had a much different Mario sticker album. I don't think I had any of the stickers, but what I remember of the descriptions, they just took screenshots of the cartoon series. There was also a Simpsons one that was rushed to market because it exclusively used screen grabs from the Tracey Ulman shorts.
