Sega and Nintendo have made some poor choices over the years, but I can't help but think this might have been the biggest blunder that they BOTH committed. On the eve of the Sega Saturn and the Nintendo 64, they helped contribute to the success that the Sony Playstation enjoyed. This choice shaped video game history forever as Sony hit the ground running and hasn't looked back since! #consolewars #videogames #videogamehistory

Someone with a Southern accent speaking intelligently about video games? I'd never thought I'd see the day. All I hear people with that accent talk about is football and racing, two sports that absolutely suck.

Your own explanation makes it clear that not only is this not Nintendo's biggest mistake, it was not a mistake at all. Sure, they ceded market share for a while, but they maintained control over their games, something, I assure you, would not have happened if they had gone ahead and partnered with Sony. The mistake, if anything, was partnering with them at all. By they time Nintendo "betrayed" them, Sony was committed to the PlayStation concept and would have been able to have the same impact with or without Nintendo. The only difference would have been a Nintendo in no position to release the Nintendo 64, the GameCube or any of the systems that kept them alive long enough to dominate the industry again, as they do today.

Oh, for sure! Smart business on the part of Yamauchi, as I said in the video. The suggestion of the video started with the concept of "Look what a monster they created!" with Sony being the monster, but, realistically, it all sort of worked out for Sony and Nintendo regardless. I mean, Sony killed it for years, and they're still doing okay today. I guess nowadays for Sony might be more like a Gamecube or N64 or Wii U era... maybe not as bad? Time will tell! I appreciate you taking the time to comment and share your insights!

@rhindlethered I want to make one thing clear before anything else, I am not a console fanboy, I play on PC. I am just looking for an expanded elaboration. Which industry is Nintendo dominating exactly? It's not the console market... as Sony is top dog. It isn't tech nor is it graphics, as the Switch is very underpowered, and their current games are ugly and barely run at 30 FPS.

@@TheCoolCore It IS the console market that they're dominating. What Nintendo lacks in hardware fidelity they more than make up for in exclusives and development cost management. They're the only console-centric video game company that still releases worthwhile exclusives on a regular basis. Meanwhile, the PS5 has less than ten exclusives, and those games are marred by expensive, lengthy development cycles. It's gotten so bad that they've had to port these games to PC try and squeeze more money out of them. Worse yet, Sony's heavy reliance on third-party publishers and developers has come to bite them on the ass. Due to a combination of rising development costs and the rise of the digital PC gaming market, AAA publishers now find it more viable to make all their big titles multi-platform, thus heavily devaluing the kinds of exclusive deals that used to greatly benefit Sony. Things have gotten even more messy with the number of mergers, acquisitions, and studio closures that have happened in the western AAA industry in recent years. And over in Japan, Sony's market has completely caved in over the last fifteen years - although the PS3 is to blame for that more than anything else.

@@EekChocolate I know all that info, I have been gaming for nearly 30 years on various platforms. In the last 8 years, I have been gaming on PC exclusively. Based on my observation, Nintendo relies on nostalgic style brand recognition. My criticisms of the Switch are still valid. Nintendo needs to make sure that their next Switch iteration is capable of 60 FPS, and they need to focus more on optimizing their games. One aspect where everyone else misses the plot and Nintendo gets right is that photo-realistic graphics aren't as important for games to be good or fun. The culprit of the ballooning budgets is the pursuit of photorealism. Thanks for the discussion. Cheers!

@TheCoolCore For better or worse, framerate is a quality metric that only hardcore nerds care all that much about. On that note, a lot of Switch games DO target 60 FPS - namely Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Super Mario Odyssey, etc.

Sega’s biggest mistake was not putting Yu Suzuki in charge of both Arcade and Console hardware development, and also some involvement in managing software devs of Sega. The guy who designed a couple Sega systems said in a interview that he had to make 3D systems, but he didn’t understand 3D at all. He said the only Person working at Sega who really did was Yu Suzuki, But he was afraid to reach out to him(Japanese custom). Yu Suzuki once gave a interview where he mentions that he studied 3D development in college and he wrote his thesis on 3D. Also when the Sega Black Belt was in development, Sega of America reached out to Yu Suzuki to develop a game for it(Shenmue), and he happy to do it. He was excited to be asked. Once Yu Suzuki was practically done, Sega of Japan found out he was working on the Black Belt and had him Switch over to the dural (Dreamcast). This is the reason Shenmue was so expensive. Development Switched from Sega Saturn, to Black Belt, to Dreamcast.

The irony of you speaking about the industry thinking "Polygons are good for inanimate objects" while showing monster truck, moving, a very animated object. Then "2-D graphics were far superior for animating people and characters" while showing X a robot blasting other robots which once again pending on who you speak to can also be regarded as animated objects. Are you just implying the industry jumped the gun on 3-D back then? hmmmm... 🤔
