Nintendo's Abandoned Fashion Game Franchise

Hiiiiii everyone! This is a video essay about Style Boutique / Style Savvy / Girls Mode for the DS and 3DS. This was a game that's meant a lot to me so I really wanted to make a video about it since I feel girlier games don't often get the 'video essay' treatment
I make lots of asmr videos so it was quite odd to talk at a regular volume and to even yell for comedic effect LOL

@@linacutekitty for real though it does give you a super fancy dress, it's the princess dress actually but maybe it's just a weird translation thing since i played a game in a different language. maybe it actually is the wedding dress in the english version

Honestly this was a surprise to see, and definitely not an unpleasant one! I always loved hearing about video games I somehow missed out on, and this is honestly one that probably would have unlocked something in me as a kid. Honestly dress-up games were my secret jam as a tiny egg.

dressup games are wonderful for the humble tiny eggs journey. I love fashion games so much since it gives and outlet to just... try stuff? Like that's such an important thing for people in general. Trans people of course get so much out of it. You can quickly try all sorts of styles and see what makes you the happiest! Its the coolest! stay hydrated and know you are valid!

New Style Boutique was probably what sparked my interest in alternative fashion when I was young, I only ever played the demo when I was young though, after buying the game this year it's just as great as I remember it, if not better (though there are some things that are a bit not so good, A lot of the fashion stuff from the soy fashion brand *didn't* age well ). The music is honestly so nostalgic for me, I listened to it so much when I was younger. I also bought New Style Boutique 3 this month, and honestly I love this one more even more than the second one, but New Style Boutique will always have a special place in my heart. The only thing that's a bit annoying about New Style Boutique 3 is that leveling up and getting anywhere in the game takes soooo long. (Haven't finished it yet, but I do still think this is my fav) As a transmasc person, it does suck a little bit that you can't pick the gender of the character, buuut the girl clothing is wayyy better so I don't mind that much. (Also for some reason you *can* choose your gender on your stylist card thingie in New Style Boutique, which like, why? If you can't choose your gender in the beginning of the game, why can you pick that there? It doesn't even affect the game in any way, whatever you choose there.) One thing that also bothers me just a little bit, is that there's like 1 body type that's either just a little bit shorter or a little taller, I wish there were more body types in the games.

Yeah it's odd the game let's you choose gender on your profile but not choose your protagonists gender? I feel all the style boutique games wouldn't if required much work to add a boy option tbh? I'm glad to hear you enjoy these games though! New style boutique is really good! I'll likely replay it after I play a lot of fashion dreamer hahaha

As far as a suggestion of overlooked games goes, another DS one ppl missed is Magician’s Quest: Mysterious Times or, for PAL, Enchanted Folk and the School of Wizardry. It’s an Animal Crossing game but there’s magic spells and even a dating mechanic with NPCs! Really interesting, ambitious little game that didn’t do too well in the West but got like three sequels in Japan. I wish they’d make a new one now that Animal Crossing New Horizons was such a big deal!

When the eShop closed, I did something... interesting to my 2DS and the first game in the series is one of the first things that I tried getting. I haven't played it very much though, I remember picking the wrong outfit too much and rage quitting! I'll have to break it out again soon. This was a really nice retrospective! Great job, glad to see you covering new territory/video styles!

I recently found my old 3DS and of course one of the games I found with it, Style Savvy Trendsetters, it’s one I’ve played a lot of, I was only 2 contests away from the international tier! It’s definitely wormed itself into my heart

Hearing about Fashion Dreamer made me rediscover Style Savvy. I didn’t actually get the game due to the middling reviews and price (probably would’ve overlooked the reviews if it were cheaper), but I did get a 3DS for Christmas (loved ones had some ways lol) along with Style Savvy Trendsetters for my birthday (somehow). I also played the og on the DS and found the cartridge a few days ago. So weird how this is what I was playing when I was in my peak NLOG/pick-me phase. My favorite brand was Marble Lily too. It was peak girly. Right now Le Spark and Marzipan Sky are also up there.

started playing this series last year on my hacked 3ds, fire series so far only thing i have to say is that imo graphics were the best on the first game on the Nintendo DS, they just had a special charm the future games didn't manage to ever replicate i also kinda use this series to escape from the real planet

I never heard or played style boutique before. But to me at 12:26 it looked like they were working on a game and then they made the dollhouse aesthetic because Tamadachi Life was a thing. They had similar dialogue systems and camera angles in the later scenes you showed which had me thinking... 🤔

There are so many games I couldn't play when I was little, because I wasn't a girl, and even now as a 21 about to be 22 years old, fashion games and "girly" games are still quite looked down upon when a guy plays them, Singapore too, most won't understand but at this point, just play what you want, before I couldn't walk up to the counter because obviously my other would stop me (Like actually stop, not question, prevent me from buying it) but now I can just walk up to the counter and just buy them haha

I had a similar experience, I only ever tried out the demo for Trendsetters as a kid and was always interested in playing more, but had mostly detached from the idea when I actually had the ability to buy it Until earlier this year, where a friend was praying the Fourth game and was saying how good it was. So I bought Trendsetters since it was the cheapest and it's been a great cozy comfort game.

Trendsetters is such a comfort game yeah! I nearly got the demo for that game when I got my 3ds when little but my launch model 3ds didn't have enough space for it :( so I never played the demo.. luckily I got to play all the games now at least! stay hydrated and know you are valid

This all started because of Fashion Dreamer coming out, and it'll probably be the next game I pick up. Also considering getting my niece a copy for Christmas so we can play together

I had a very similar experience with New Style Boutique! I always played the fashion contest demo sooo much, but then I never got the game, this year I finally bought it and it was great! So after a few months I also got New Style Boutique 3, its great so far, love the game so much.

Trendsetters was my first of the franchise I played. I played until Style Savvy. I wanted to play more, but there wasn't anymore. The new franchise they have doesn't look like the kind game play style I'd like.
