i doubt its that. Nintendo is air tight about things like that. thats why hacking on the mariko switch(v2) is rumored to be impossible. Only one group claims they can hack it and thats with a hardware mod

Niccster10 interesting... but afaik every Nintendo hardware has been exploited to date... Original Switch took less than 24 hrs but the lite v2 took a little longer. From what I read online the specs and such was leaked on v2 and exploit devs and teams alike were underwhelmed in what they saw which led to lite v2 being moved lower in the to do list but exploited nonetheless relatively quickly for those glorious scene prestige they seem to crave so much. The only exceptions afaik depends if the hardwares firmware has been updated as Nintendo and similar companies tries to keep on top of these kind of things.

It looks innocent to me tbh. It probably requires a special hardware with specific software(s) and such to actually make any system level changes (assuming that’s what it’s for ofc) so bricking ones switch just by doing what Vince demoed in this video is probably unlikely to cause any serious damage aka it’s just the initial portion for whatever it maybe. Similarly to when you put your iPhone to recovery mode. As long as you don’t follow up and make changes, it ought to be a-ok imho.

the bootup screen is the manufacture mode screen similar to download mode for android phones, allows Nintendo to reinstall firmware using software in bulk

FastLikeUNO one of the reasons I loved the wii was because it let me use the Internet without my parents knowing. The switch has some Internet browser screens for wifi login or other stuff but yeah no browser yet

Well the SwitchBrew Team recently showed how they got into the security of the switch and how they could run own code, so HomeBrew and other Apps for the Switch are not so far away anymore. For me a webbrowser would actually be a reason to hack my switch.

I can't think of anything else then a recovery mode. Like the android fastboot option. My phone allows me to use a similiar key combination to evoke a firmware screen which then allows it to mount it's system partition via USB so I can load a fresh copy of the firmware to upgrade if things go wrong

It has a mode where commands can be sent over USB but the commands must be signed with Nintendo's private RSA key and I don't know if there's a special mode it has to be in or if what's shown is that mode. It looks like it has a really short timeout if that is for interfacing over USB. The 34c3 talk about the switch details this a little bit

considering the switch has such removable/replaceable memory, it's almost certainly for reinstalling the OS on a new memory module if it fails.. given that it automatic updates it when you activate it. prolly a locked down recovery (easy for recovery, hard for hacks)

It might be a servicing load screen that searches a boot sequence through the USB, only known by Nintendo if the system crashes permanently, which is a workaround to fix the console if nothing else works including the recovery screen, they probably had similar tools for the Wii / Wii U. Nintendo won't admit to this though.
