I'm enjoying playing the classic games i grew up with on the switch. It would cost way more money to get every console and buy all the original games that i want. So $50 for the online + all the good classic Nintendo games is nothing to me. $50 is nothing. Video game snobs will never change.

6:46 I wonder if Nintendo uses NSO emulators as a loss leader. In other words, they use us as a feature that attracts buyers to the Switch, but something that loses them money if they were to invest in the service and its features more. Once you have a Switch, you buy Switch stuff. Nintendo would have to pay money to improve NSO emulation beyond the bare minimum. Then again, not investing into improvements is a self-fulfilling prophecy.

4:16 Nintendo doesn’t own Tetris, they just publish it. Also it WAS on Nintendo switch online for the gameboy. Unlike Atari, Nintendo collections don’t have 2-3 versions of 1 game, although I do like how Atari allows for me to have options as the arcade and 2600 versions are different, although NES Tetris is just gameboy Tetris without Multiplayer or the iconic music. Ones clearly better so why have 2?

The emulation on NSO is fine imo and the thumbnail is a bit sensationally click baity. Some interesting stories none the less.
@GenXGrownUp11 күн бұрын
I don't think it's click baity in the slightest considering it's exactly what the article I was referencing stated based on an industry experts opinion. That being said, I'm sure there are plenty who agree with you that the NSO emulation is fine.

Hmm.. well volutar works does alot of mods on retro consoles, repairs, recaps and is overall a cool dude. I have NSO and while it's easy to use for pick-up/play for some games the emulation is not where near as good as it was on the wii or even the wii-u. The input latency is just terrible for platformers. There's also the fact Nintendo isn't even selling these games digitally, despite yet again the wii, wii-u and 3ds having shops dedicated to just that. I honestly wouldn't have NSO if it wasn't for the cloud/save backups for my games.
@WhatsOnMyShelf3 күн бұрын
Does the latency exist when played in handheld mode? I can understand when the Switch is docked to a flat panel TV that latency would exist.

It’s very interesting that you post this. I don’t understand why Nintendo is so clueless regarding their old consoles. I’d happily buy N64 games and even a N64 console remake if they rereleased them. The N64 collectors second hand market is getting crazy high prices, and I’d rather buy brand new rereleased stuff than expensive used products. I have zero interest in Switch games, they mean nothing to me. If they believe their online retro games policy will make me buy Switch games, they are nuts. Atari is getting this right, unlike Nintendo. What I’m going to do this Christmas however is to pay the online subscription of about 40€ that provides an interesting set of N64 games: no, I don’t have the Switch, and I’m not buying it even drunk, but paying the subscription is a way for my conscience being in peace with playing with the Ares emulator in my Mac the roms if the N64 games included in the subscription. If Nintendo was smart, there’s money in this. Analogue 3D realized about it. Nintendo is too clueless to get the point.

It could be nit-picky if you’re someone who specializes and programs for emulators counting frames on a fast paced shoot ‘em up. The quote about a handheld Linux device seems like an unfriendly haughty person to talk to. Emulation doesn’t have to be great performing for all the games. Punch Out is an example that people point out is hard to emulate right with timing. For the more basic games,Nintendo is probably doing fine enough. I like to still buy digital ownership instead of subscription with games still. Lots of good sales still most of the time.

What is Nintendo gonna do after the subscription isn’t available? Give it to us for free? What’s the point of the subscription, a few good games, random and obscure 1990’s games, and pointless Japanese exclusives that nobody asked for? We’re paying 50 bucks for this?

I will say I've had an NSO account for several years and have never gotten into the NSO classic games. Free emulators have historically been better than Nintendo's since the Wii era. But the delay really kills the NSO ones. Maybe the Wii ones also had delay but I was younger and didn't really care. However I was older when I had a WiiU and I remember liking it's emulation. In this video you said Nintendo is supposed to be pretty good at this, it's important to highlight: they have never been good at this. Their emulation products have almost always been a poor copy-paste of free emulators available, but with missing improvements or running on weaker hardware than it was designed for. Nintendo doesn't put effort into the emulation side, it's always a quick buck for them. They get it in a state that the majority of players won't quite notice consciously. Nerrell has done a video or two on the N64 stuff, and yes he is being nit-picky. But the point is the premium product should try to deliver these classic games in the best light they can get. As proof with my NSO experience, I never enjoyed any games on the service for long, and that's likely due to the latency. Sure I might not notice it right away with nothing to compare it to; but I do put down the game kinda bummed after a few levels, and I don't 100% know why. I just "didn't like that game", but with nearly every game. That leaves me thinking these classic games were only fun back then but are no longer up to date. When in reality, if they were running correctly they'd be just as fun as they were.

To be fair NSO is NOT a retro game anything it’s the entire online infrastructure to play games online just like with Sony/Microsoft. The retro games are a bonus. Also Tetris, even the NES version is owned by The Teris Company, not Nintendo. They need to pay rights to have it.
@SteveBrandon11 күн бұрын
I'll never pay for a subscription service just to play decades-old games. I don't mind Nintendo Switch Online existing for people who want it but I'd much rather just buy the games I want to play individually or in collections.

Tetris not being on NSO from its launch is one of the most glaring oversights in the history of the company. It's truly a mystery. Good talk!
