This is an arrangement of "Chapel Hidden in Smoke," a theme by Michiru Yamane from Konami’s 2007 DS game Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia. I have arranged the song for native playback on SNES hardware, and the audio was recorded directly from a launch-model SNES deck.
If you'd like to see any of my other arrangments, you can find my playlist right here: • Game Music Remixes/Cov...
Thanks for listening!

0:00 to 0:05 sounds like Final Fantasy IV then the rest of the song sounds like you used Dracula X SNES as a base, and maybe instruments from other games. Cool either way this arrangement.

Thanks! Good ear on that intro. I yanked the harp from FFV (if it's not the same sample that FF4 used, it's pretty close). I didn't use anything from Dracula X, though. Maybe it's the treble-heavy snares and hats that make it sound similar?
@AlfonsoECruz
@AlfonsoECruz 2 жыл бұрын
@@NintendoComplete Yes the harp from FFV I forgot about that one, IV and V’s harps sound similar but to tell them apart it’s the echo sound they make, all the songs in both games have a unique echo that you can tell where they are from. And Yes the general instrumentation, snares and hats, do indeed sound like Dracula X SNES but that’s cool that it’s not and they sound similar. There’s several SNES and NES arrangements songs and KZbin channels floating around that I listen to that it’s fun to hear how people creatively arrange these tracks.

Wow. Sounds really close to the original! Are the samples sourced from the original game, or did you pick other samples that sounded close?
@NintendoComplete
@NintendoComplete 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I didn't use any from the original game. I think the one that probably makes it sound so close is that bell lead. I sampled it from a recording of the Roland D50's fantasia patch which was pretty widely used in early 90s, so I wonder if that was their source, too. These samples are much simpler than the DS game's were, though. The SNES doesn't have much memory at all to work with. That D50 sample alone is taking up over half the available audio ram 😆
@_aitchfactor188
@_aitchfactor188 2 жыл бұрын
@@NintendoComplete Half the available sample ram? 29KB? You've gotta be joking (it sounds like it was worth it, though)! Was that necessitated by a high sampling rate, or does the patch just have an extremely long decay? When I make SNES arrangements in SNESMod and I find I'm running out of space, I'll usually obsessively optimise the pattern data first, since there's no quality loss even though it might only save a couple kilobytes at most. Then I usually try to loop samples and add a volume envelope to simulate a decay, or make samples' loops shorter if they're already looped. This tends to work surprisingly well with percussion of all kinds, with some canny sample editing and the right loop points. Sometimes I'll dedicate a lot of time to trying to reproduce or enhance a sound with the SNES's FM synthesis (some versions of SNESMod support this, but it can only be previewed after conversion). Then of course, the nuclear solution of downsampling, where I try to start with the samples with negligible high frequency content, then the samples that are least audible or are played the least often. SNES chiptune feels very neglected to me compared to NES or Genesis chiptune, and perhaps rightfully so since general trackers and DAWs have objectively made its sound redundant. Nonetheless, I personally really enjoy the puzzle of cramming as much as possible into such a small space, and it's good to see someone else showing that SNES music is more than just Super Mario World and Mega Man X samples.

@@_aitchfactor188 Yeah, it's huge. Before I compressed it to brr it was 53K iirc. To keep the character of the sound I needed fairly long loop, and the attack and decay are handled by volume envelopes and volume slide commands. The quality is a pretty high on it because, like you said, the treble heavy instruments really stand out and I used the same sample across multiple octaves. I didn't want the lower notes to sound too crunchy. At the lowest notes, it's playing at around 12Khz, and at the highest it's around 55Khz, but on average it stays in the 25-32Khz range. It sounds awful on a tracker though because I boosted the shit out of the treble. If I need the space I'll do similar things to what you mentioned with the percussion. That's how I handled the crash cymbal on this one. For synth leads and pads, I like to try to time the loop so that the seam lands close to a downbeat. I've found doing that can create some nice faux modulation effects, especially when it's combined with an envelope that gently shifts the volume up and down. (And I feel you with SMW and MMX. I don't get the obsession, either. They both had great soundtracks, but the samples weren't particularly great.)
