@Nicholas Rumleskie Yeah, that's my day job. I dunno, I'm sure that we all learn something from our influences, no matter what they are. My only REAL complaint is how brutal and unforgiving the game is compared to its console counterparts. I know limiting continues was a thing back then, but one life per credit for something requiring THIS MUCH resource management and pattern memorization is borderline obscene. I don't think credit spamming would have been good for this game either. To be honest, I don't know where the balance would be, but I DO know this game needed more time in the oven and more money in the bank to have truly done the IP justice.

It's kinda weird playing a linear Castlevania game without breakable candles in the levels (That's like having Super Mario Bros without Coin Blocks). Especially when in the first game you could upgrade the whip to maximum range in matter of seconds. The sprites here are so big, that a double sized whip would already take half the screen horizontally, which might be a reason why they had to nerf the system by adding Chain and the Sword.

I also find this game quite important historically in the Akumajou Dracula games because, even Sōgetsu no Jūjika (aka Dawn of Sorrow) re-used music from this exact game. Also, not a bad one, not really a good one, is really in some sort of limbo of whatever you like it or not, maybe is really whatever you can even play it without getting too frustrated, but I will also do credits for the music, very very impressive voices, and this is probably the only Akumajou Dracula game where you can throw "Bombs" and "Boomerangs" as sub-weapons, I'm not aware if any other allows you to do this, is also the first one where a Sword is your main weapon, alongside many things, while minimal, the concept is there and will be re-used in later games. Anyway nice playthrough, this is "K" version right? Because it doesn't look as absurd as "M"

M is absolutely absurd. I've learned to not play it if I dont want to throw controllers. The difficulty level imo absolutely ruins it. This is the K version. It's still hard, but it's much more manageable.
@Bloodreign16 жыл бұрын
My thinking the M in the M revision has to stand for masochistic, because it takes that kind of person to want to do that particular version due to it's insane version. There's 2 Japanese revisions as well, not sure if they share the same difficulty level or not, and the one I have on PS2, not sure which Japanese revision it's based off of, but I am not good at it at all. Funny presentation clashing with the regular games aside, this would be a bonafide classic arcade game if certain versions didn't decide your long life bar was exactly 2 hit points. Or arbitrarily cut off your continues as if it doesn't WANT you punching quarters in. Good thing you can play any version but with infinite continues in the modern Switch port. And it's got some iconic music for the series, the final level especially becoming Julius' theme in the Sorrow games.

I swear blind that there was a Vs. arcade version of the NES Castlevania linked up to an Excitebike at our local Wal-Mart right before the release of the NES back in 1985 but my memory might not be right. I do know there was a Ghost'n'Gobblins arcade game linked up with a Vs. Super Mario Bros. (which was the first time I ever played that game). I think Nintendo did that with third parties to promote games that were to be launch titles (or 2nd wave launch) a few months before the NES came out but not using NES hardware of course.
@Bloodreign16 жыл бұрын
There is a Vs Castlevania, I remember playing that after playing Simon's Quest, and eventually picking up the NES Castlevania at a pawn shop weeks after playing the cabinet (it felt great to finally have it at home after seeing it in Nintendo Power, then kind of forgetting what it looked like thanks to Simon's Quest). The difficult is a bit higher in the Vs game as enemies can sap your energy at a higher rate than the NES CV. You'll have 4 bars taken off your health a hell of a lot faster in Vs CV, and each stage's timer is considerably shorter, meaning you can't dawdle around stages for too long.
