Yep, The director picked certain parts of it, but made a slight change compared to the original. The actor is african american, compared to a white version of Tim. In the moive they show what the father may look like. But in the game, we only get glimpses from Pikachu's dream of what he could have looked like. But again, we don't really know. The movie loosely follwos the cases but not as bold or prevelent as what the game had. And the R thing? That was changed to make it to where it did happen, and the CEO took control of Mewtwo to fuse humans and pokemon into one. That I believe the mid ending is the huge story change in the movie compared to the game.

I'm going with the theory that Harry and Detective Pikachu are somehow combined as one... "So why can I understand them?" - Pikachu questioning himself after trying to see if any humans can understand him, only to fail before he meets Tim. You'd think he would have been asking himself this question before Harry even disappeared, right? He can understand them because his and Harry's minds/bodies are possibly fused. "In my dream, I was pleading with Mewtwo to save Harry" - Pikachu explaining a flashback to Tim. After agreeing to help solve the R case and get his cells, Mewtwo fuses Pikachu's and Harry's minds together since Harry is possibly too weak to survive in his human form. "Don't treat me like a Pokemon" - Pikachu Tim wasn't able to understand Pikachu before the accident, claiming that he was more cute/docile back then. Pikachu and Harry both like coffee and sweets. Tim mentions that he and his dad are alike in that way, and bumping into Mr. Baker on their way out, Mr. Baker mentions that Pikachu never drank coffee before the accident. He is unable to use any moves like Thunderbolt until he's desperate to save Tim. Mewtwo and Pikachu in their conversation on the ship: "You stopped me back then as well. The real you, that is. Humans cannot be trusted. I've told you this. It seems you have forgotten that, as well. You were the one who told me that the human world could be tedious...which is why I trusted you to take care of things for me." Was he warning Pikachu that humans couldn't be trusted before going on with the mind fusing? It seems like something 'normal' Pikachu would say, but also something Harry might say as well because of the people after him during his investigation, so he understands how Mewtwo feels all too well? When they find the locket that has the picture of Tim and his mother, Pikachu's expression seems to be of sadness and longing for his family. "Harry...where could you have possibly disappeared to?" - Pikachu while resting on the car at the scene of the accident, and Mewtwo hovers over them with a small, knowing kind of smile before flying off. Harry may have chosen to stay as Detective Pikachu because he is still too weak or possibly dying as a human which is why Pikachu pled with Mewtwo to save him in the first place, so Mewtwo didn't really give him a 'choice' at all. Human Harry could also be trapped somewhere, so as a human he would be unable to be with his son anyway, and thus made the choice to stay with him as Detective Pikachu. His choice with Mewtwo at the end is the only thing that kind of stumps me about this theory since I'm not sure if he was faintly aware of Harry inside him the whole time or if he regained enough of his memories by the end to figure it out and make a choice (plus the whole "Mewtwo knows Harry" line) but I still think it's a very plausible thing that could have happened since Mewtwo does say that Harry is still alive (just in a different way.) Maybe Pikachu is fully aware that he is Harry or has Harry inside of him, but is choosing to keep it from Tim (would you want your son to know that you're dead or dying and have to stay as a Pokemon? xD) based on his "I'll be taking care of you for awhile" line next. I can't wait for the movie and hope that our theories will maybe be answered/explained!

My theory: Tim's dad died during the accident, but his soul took over his Pikachu's mind and body basically unintentionally killing the original soul of that said mind and body. 09:25:15 Finally, after nearly a week or so of watching this, I finally finished this. This I wished I watch this before the movie. But after watching the movie and seeing this, I can see why the movie took on the sequel part of having his father appear right then and there. That ending should lead its way back to Detective Pikachu 2, to where Tim and Pikachu find his father, but, it could be stretched in three parts or so, depends on the developer. But this game I truly loved. I may not play it, but this game, I love it. So that made me wonder now who had the Noivern and where it happened. And gees, all of this Pikachu was a planned Terrorist bombing from the start, and they both disarmed it before the bomb could even explode. We all knew Pikachu had some power inside of him to fight back. If he didn't, they would have been struggling right then and there. So, what would the next story be about if they ever make a sequel??

Well, in the broader sense it's probably based off of Sherlock and Watson (Great detective that isn't understood by anyone (but not in the literal sense like Pikachu), who finds someone who clicks well with him and they partner up and compliment one another's strengths and weaknesses and solve crimes - they even seem to be referencing Baker Street, where Sherlock lives). But if you mean the specific plot then I have no idea.
