He wasn't happy that this was happening, and that the world was being destroyed, and, basically, he said "I'm not having any of this! I'll stop you in your place!" But, you just can't look at him and not think that he's cute, and he might get some laughs here and there, but he's not nice whenever you get on his bad side!

Yea basically kirby has a switch so his mouth changes from ‘beeg mouth’ mode to ‘black hole’ mode. Hypernova amplifies BOTH of these modes, allowing Kirby to inhale enormous amounts of matter without the need to use his ‘black hole’ mode

The giant rock he fought in Right Back at Ya's name was Blocky (or at least that what I think that's what he was called in the dub). As for why Kirby couldn't inhale him, I think it was mostly because the anime was taking a lot of inspiration and ideas from the first three games in the franchise, way before Kirby really got a handle on his powers yet. Hell, in the episode involving said rock monster, Kirby actually couldn't inhale him and needed a training session just to get said monster to split into four pieces before he could use the stone ability to have the monsters drown at the bottom of the ocean.
