What dictates a three star rank?

As someone who is currently attempting to get 3 star ranking on all cups (only a few more mirror mode cups) it's a few things: Coming in 1st every race, and having a high percentage of time in 1st place, as well as staying on the track by way of not falling off or going into off-road without a speed item to compensate. It also is the amount of items that you get hit by. Additionally, overall race performance (what time you finish), For example, for this person in Luigi Circuit he finished under 2 minutes. I believe that 2 minutes (and different time requirements that are in 15 second increments) are what you need to achieve or be faster than to be given a 3 star on the race and leading to the 3 star of the entire cup as a whole. Edit: I did notice that the 3 star ranking is more lenient with the star and special cup and consequently the leaf and lightning cup for the retros. In those cups, I've fallen off maybe 1 or 2 times and still gotten the coveted 3 stars, while in the easier cups you can't fall off a single time or you'll get a 2 star or lower.
