I think it's interesting but humorous how the newer games (Superstars and Jamboree) just don't even bother anymore with the dialogue, but it's still capped at 99 Stars.

Makes sense, the games maxed a 30 turns so unless you get incredibly good rng with warp blocks and star locations being near boos you’re not getting that cap legally, and I can’t even say with confidence my method even works.

Mario Party 2 actually HAD a softlock in this case. If a player had 99 stars and then reached Boo, the option to ask to steal a star is disabled, but the AI would try to select it anyway and just get stuck. It's been done in a tool-assisted speedrun. It doesn't happen any more in Mario Party 3.

With the Mario Party 8 dialogues with Captain Goomba and Holly Koopa, they were both obtained in the 1v1 game modes, where getting just one star on these maps wins you the match immediately. So naturally there’s no unique dialogue for those instances; but there might’ve been for the regular board maps (including the Boo mansion board too).

Wait, there no dialog for that in DK's Stone Statue ? I'm pretty sure there has to be, because this is a board where it's possible to get 99 stars legitimately on a 50 turns game, because during the final 5 turns, you can get them for 5 coins with the right Final 5 Frenzy bonus. Since this is a board where you can hoard coins and spend them all in one go to get as many stars as you can afford, you can just spend 45 turns collecting 500 coins (doable with the honeyhive event), and then get max stars at the end.

There are a few rare theoretical cases for the legit 99 star game on a few boards in the series.

The Donkey Kong board in Mario Party DS is an example. You can exchange as many stars as your coins allow at once. On top of that, Bowser can reduce the cost from 20 to 5 coins per star. So 495 coins would be enough. Not feasible on a normal game, but it's definitely been TAS'ed before.

So... nobody's going to question the fact that if a player earns 999 stars (next to impossible without modding) in the gamecube games, there's dialogue, but for the later games, where 99 is the cap (a more likely solution), the toad and toadette just go about their day with nothing special going down?
