What Happens if You Use a Star in Boss Fights in Mario Games?

Usually, Mario games stop you from using a Star in boss fights, so your one-hit kill power does not mess up the battle. Here is what happens when we actually bring Stars into boss fights.

My guess with Petey Piranha’s instant KO is that it’s possible to defeat him this way due to being able to obtain a star early in the level within a roulette block and perfectly run towards the boss fight room and jump towards him. Perhaps it was an intentional feature or maybe just a bug the devs forgot to fix? I don’t really know, this is just my theory.

In Super Mario 3D Land, the player can get an Invincibility Leaf after dying five times so being invincible at any point is normal. However, you can't get the Leaf in the special worlds.

Petey Piranha is almost definitely because that is the only boss level in the game where you can actually get a Star in the level and make it to the boss room before it runs out. They intended for Mario / Luigi to be able to be Star Mario / Star Luigi for this boss fight so they made the star function normally for that boss.

Fun fact about Petey piranha on nsmb ds: If you get the star from the item roulette that exists in the w-5 castle and run like hell,you can just barely hit him with the star WITHOUT CHEATS. It's a little tricky to pull of since you have to hold the run button and press up to open the boss door as doon as possible

With the Bowser Jr fights in New Super Mario Bros DS, you can still fight him even with the star powerup if you also use the fire flower since you can still hit him with the fire.

iirc in Mario Wii it was expected because you had checkpoints before the boss and you could use a star from the Map.

I think that it wasn't intended but I'm not 100% sure. Bowser is programmed to not only damage but also knock Mario away if you touch him, exactly the way a ground pound knocks a player away in this game. I think that Bowser's sprite and a player performing a ground pound are covered with same hitbox. And the reason why Mario doesn't take damage is because he is in his starform and that he programmed to not take damage except if he is crushed.

What’s interesting to me is that in the original Super Mario Bros., the sprite shown when defeating Bowser was Bowser’s actually sprite. For anyone unfamiliar, if you beat Bowser in worlds 1-7 with a fire flower, an enemy’s sprite will normally be displayed instead of Bowser’s, indicating that it’s a fake. Whether this not occurring here is due to the nature of how Mario was given star power or if Bowser was only programmed to display an enemy sprite if he was defeated _specifically_ with the fire flower, I’m not sure.

For 3d land, you have the invincibility leaf, so the bosses are programmed to not react when you're invincible.

A similar weird glitch happens in NSMB DS when fighting Bowser Jr with a blue shell. He won’t be damaged if you hit him while in the shell.

The SMW one is interesting because they specifically used a Game Genie code and that code is known to have graphical glitches even outside the Koopaling fights. It also behaves a bit differently than real stars in other ways. I'm curious if they used a cheat to get a star to appear and use that to see what happens in SMW.

I remember when I used the endless star Game Genie code for Super Mario World, I had a similar experience. Sometimes I'd defeat an enemy, but their death will look like someone or something else. If I defeat Ball 'N' Chain with a star, its death will be an upside down yellow Bony Beetle in spike formation.

I wonder if using the star would count as if you're using the super leaf, meaning you couldn't get the sparkling 5 stars for your profile. For those not in the know, if at any point the super leaf shows up in any level you can't get the perfect clear file. Only way to get a perfect clear file is by never having the super leaf show up meaning the ? Block at the beginning of the level. You can actually bypass this by closing the game without saving if you accidentally get the super leaf ? Block.

On the DS game. We had this action replay we used for the game. We could enable permanent star powerups. My version didn't do what this video showed. So let me tell what happened in mine. All bosses were interactable even with the star powerup. No ignoring Mario at all. You could fight every boss except for one. The fish boss was the only boss that you couldn't fight as he refused to leave the water entirely. So he was the only fight you couldn't use the star power in otherwise you would have to restart the castle.

Super Mario World explanation: it was intended at one time in development to be able to get a star into the reserve item box. I understand it's kinda still there if you get a star while in the level ending; it still puts the star into the reserve item, which activates normally. Good luck getting a star during the level ending screen though.
