James Kalm has been otherwise occupied, and slow to edit video programs recently. “NINTH STREET AND BEYOND: 70 YEARS OF WOMEN IN ABSTRACTION: PART II: The Geometric” at Hunter Dunbar should be considered one of the seasons most timely exhibitions. This expansive show is the second of two exhibitions (the first dealing with “gestural abstraction”), and traces the arch of geometric, minimal and reductive abstraction in America from the late 1940s to today. It presents works by over 70 artists representing three generations of women. A list of included artists would be unmanageable but, the shortest of short lists contains: Lee Krasner, Alma Thomas, Yayoi Kusama, Louise Nevelson, Agnes Martin, Elizabeth Murray, Betty Parsons, and Charmion Von Wiegand. A musical introduction is provided by Gabriel Mayers. This program was recorded May 19, 2022. #jameskalmreport #jameskalmroughcut #lorenmunk

Such a wide-ranging show, yet it seems to hang together seamlessly. Loved discovering Alma Thomas (at 16:00). Looking her up, I realized that this piece knocks the ball out of the park perhaps in large part b/c it's a monochrome. Also those magical forms that are the hubs for the "tiles" that fill the canvas. The Elizabeth Murray piece was also wonderful. And that ol' art maven Louise Nevelson - man oh man did she find a concept to soar to the highest heights with... Never ever loses its simple brilliance. Thank you for the tour James, and thank you Kate!

Amazing piece by Tara Donovan, what a great organic effect achieved with simple buttons and glue! Thanks for the tour, James.

That Krasner was unexpected, to me, at least. I wish I could be there, but Jk’s the next best thing. Thanks, Kate, too.

Thank you soooo much for doing these reports. We are big fans from a tiny rural town on the west coast. You keep us up on what’s happening on the east coast. (And thank you Kate)

As I recall most of Kasmins shows were in the two front rooms facing 10th Avenue although sometimes he would use a large back room behind the room with the large wide front window but I do not remember ever even seeing a stairwell much less the cellar. When there were two corner Kasmin galleries opposite each other on 10th Avenue and 27th Street and one more in the middle of the same block I was always wondering when that stretch of 27th Street would be renamed Kasmin Alley.

It's so interesting that this art is easily placed in the time it was made (dated, so you will, but I love it), but that it would be hard to recreate that specific style if you'd tried to do that now. At least, I think it would be hard. Just like retro fashion...it never really gets at the original style.

Charmin must have been friends with Israel Regardie or deep in his work and writings . The color scheme and geometric forms are almost right on with his magick paintings and theories.
