Nioh | Kensei Build | Katana and Spear

Happy Halloween everybody, and happy birthday to Mrs. Kerfuffle. The time has finally come for me to unveil my latest, and last Nioh build which I call "The Kensei". Everything in this video was done on the highest difficulty setting "Way of the Nioh". I've loved every minute of this game, start to finish, and I still want to go through and finish all the levels again. Hopefully we go a little longer before another major patch, but we'll see what happens. Thanks to everyone for the 100 subscribers and I hope to entertain even more of you going forward.

Aside from what I listed off in the video, I also unlock earthfolding for use in the abyss, and anything that gives a decrease on other passives like ki useage, Amrita earned, luck, etc. Quick change, Tiger Sprint, suppa, and catwalking are also really useful, and necessary for speed-running. I also maxed out the damage and capacity of my guns, increase both ninjutsu and onmyo capacities from 30 to 40. With only 30 skill points in each there isn’t enough to get everything I’ve listed, you have to make up the difference with locks of hair. Everything I unlock I take to level 3 since the cost to have a level 3 is less then at level one, but of course it’s at the cost of skill points.

Skully Jones I recommend heart, skill, and strength. Reason is because all three effect the katana Attack multiplier. Heart especially since it gives an extra bonus to katanas and in my opinion Ki is far more valuable then anything else and there is no such thing as too much Ki.

Anything that enhances Attack directly doesn’t stack. (Leeching, carnage, power pill) The reason I pop a carnage talisman prior to leaching is because it gives a defense debuff, the leeching talisman replaces carnage’s damage but keeps the debuff. The more negative effects you have active at one time the stronger the Kigetsu set effect gets.

The ending music comes from the ending of the animated short “Dragons” from Overwatch. What was that sword move you used to defeat Hanzo that launched him into the air at the 2:45 mark? I’ve never seen that move in any other video nor been able to figure out how it works.

Baka Dumb1 it was the start to the “Izuna Drop”, the iconic Hyabusa/Ninja Gaiden move. It replaces the backstab when you have it set in your skill customization for Katanas. Hanzo is a milktoast so he died from the initial hit, so unfortunately you didn’t get to see the spinning piledriver that follows. That skill as well as the Flame Dragon ninjutsu can only be found at random by beating Jin Hyabusa. Ironically enough, at 1:51 the Devine item that bounces off to the left by itself was the drop that gave me Izuna Drop. I got Flame Dragon a few attempts later.

Hey ! Great build. I know I'm pretty late on this video, but something is bothering me a lot here. At 1:32 you can clearly see muneshige's hit connecting, and yet it doesn't do any damage to you. Why is that ? I might have missed something here

Zαиzι there is a weapon perk called “nullify damage after dash attack” that can negate a single hit within a short window. Can only roll on ethereal weapons and gear.

You need to make sure you’re as close to the opponent as possible because the Iai quickdraw animation actually puts you technically behind them and that’s the part of the hitbox it’s detecting which is where the critical damage comes from.

First off, awesome video. I don't like living on the edge with no life, so I have a build that is basically very similar minus the no health. I would like to know how I can get more damage out of my build. I'm hitting with quickdraw around 120-150k. Is there an option that actually has health so i'm not one shot constantly?

Casey Anderson Yes but your options are limited. I myself did not like playing with low life either, and I’m pretty sure I even say that in one of my other videos. However, when you get into Way of the Nioh difficulty it kinda becomes pointless because anything bigger then the little zombie guys or a ronin grunt can pretty much kill you in one to two hits anyway. Leeching talisman gives you the biggest boost to attack of all the Onmyo/Ninjutsu and its always going to be draining your health. If you’re looking to keep your HP high I’d recommend an Amaterasu build or anything that makes you super tanky. You’ll basically be giving up high attack DPS for overall resilience. There is another grace set that also gives high HP but its name escapes me. It is possible to make a build with so much health and defense that you can withstand one of the Sanada Maru arrow barrages and not die. So it’s a pretty even trade off with this game, either you kill in one hit or die in one hit, or you live through several hits but have to deal several of your own. There is always the Living Weapon build, but those are a dime a dozen and require a lot of amrita stone farming. Your best bet for damage to Iai Quickdraw outside of Futsunushi and added skill damage on your weapon is getting added damage effects like paralysis or Poison since there are helmets that have passive damage boosts to enemies effected by that ailment. Carnage is okay, power pill is almost pointless.

Hello King Kerfuffle, please tell me in which location is best to farm the set Grace of futsunushi ?

Grace of Futsunushi only appears in two ways. If an ethereal weapon drops after defeating a player revenant it will be Futsunushi. It cannot appear normally on a random ethereal drop. It can also appear in the abyss on defiled items. The ones that drop from revenants will not have a (+) rating on their level, they always start at 0. Ones from the abyss with have a + rating in relation to how far into the abyss it was acquired. A good farming spot for either finding random Futsunushi gear or defiling specific items you want to turn Futsunushi is by starting on floor 34 and fight until you defeat the Ogress on floor 37, then leave. There are about 5 sets that appear in regular occurrence using this method, one of which is Futsunushi.

ThundeRZ Lundorff it is true that it doesn’t stack with leeching, however that isn’t why I used it. I used it for the debuff to defense because the Kigetsu set bonus gives you a damage increase for every negative status ailment you have at a given time.

ThundeRZ Lundorff make sure you pop leeching AFTER carnage. If you pop leeching first, carnage will overwrite it because the game only tracks the last attack buff you used. Leeching is far stronger so it should always be the last Damage increase onmyo you use.

Or is my best option to forge like 10 swords with lai quickdraw, (EXPENSIVE) on them, defile them, fight through floors 21-25, and hope to RNiohGesus one becomes a futsunushi? Sounds like an expensive farce.

90s Network Productions You have two options. #1 Exactly what you just stated, however I recommend floor 34 and fight to 37 (ogress). #2 go to a level with a lot of revenants, like ohashi bridge, and cycle through any that have a katana. All revenant weapons that aren’t part of a designated set will drop as Futsunushi. You will probably have better luck with #1.

TigerSouls I am currently using Onimaru Kunitsuna. Many people say that weapons with permanent elemental stats are a waste, however I disagree. All weapons can have up to seven stat slots available. When forging a Devine weapon you can only forge up to five slots max. A set bonus or grace takes up another slot, which would leave the last slot blank, so in my opinion something is better than nothing. I chose Onimaru Kunitsuna specifically because I have accessories that give me extra fire damage and I have a hand cannon that gives me 24% to fire damage too, which in many cases gives me around an extra 10k per hit.

Mauro Martins the armor that I used to refashion it was “The Last Great General”. You have to have both the chest and waist of that set in order to get the white jinbaori.

Ilja Prohorov so in my skill trees I have unlocked everything for spear, and everything but night rain, tiger sprint, sword of meditation, and the light armor backflip on the katana. That and if there was a passive skill in any other tree that wasn’t specific to just that weapon then I unlocked those as well. I also have Melee Mastery maxed at lvl 100. Any extra skill points I had then got dumped into The ranged weapon mastery.

Everything that was done in this video was post patch 1.20 and my other video where I go above one million damage was 1.21. So unless patch 1.22 happened and I didn't hear about it then no, nothing has been nerfed.

Minh Trần this ones for a little later because it uses Grace sets, and I don’t think ethereal gear starts dropping until you are in way of the wise difficulty. You can check out my Itto-ryu build (my first video). The haze parry doesn’t do what you see in that video anymore, but the armor sets are still decent. Once you start getting into the Osaka regions then you can move over to the Kigetsu set.

Iv done about 50 runs of defiling for futsunushi and i only need one more piece for the iai bonus, but i cant seem to get a cannon to futsu. (all on floors 34-37) Do you have any tips/recommendations? I was thinking to get a sword with futsu but its a lot of forging to get ones with iai star and then the grace. Also, can you re-defile an ethereal with a grace already on it and get a new grace?

MrSimpy10 sadly there’s no recommendation since it’s all RNG still. I myself went and farmed the smithing text for the “lightning cannon” from the stage “The Last Samurai”, forged 5 or so cannons, defiled all of them and ran those floors and got one to turn Futsu. Also, once a piece of gear is ethereal it’s grace cannot be changed again. This actually helps to some degree because then you can defile it to level it up quickly without soul matching.

HIEP CHU each time you go up in difficulty the higher the level will go. If you want to get to level 300-310 you have to play on the highest difficulty, Way of the Nioh.

Mileena Empress of Outworld it’s a weapon perk called Nullify Damage. Allows you to absorb a single hit for a very short window after hitting an opponent. The whole reason for hitting Honda with the low attack was to trigger it in anticipation of the hit I knew was coming from Muneshige.

Breiner Garcia the armor that I used to refashion what I’m actually wearing is made up of two sets. The do (chest) and hizayaroi (waist) are from the Last Great General’s set which drops from Sanada in “Fare for the Afterlife” After you beat him there, it will drop randomly elsewhere as well. The kote “wrist” and Suneate “legs” are from the Demon King set dropped by Nobunaga in “The Demon King Revealed”.

Yeah the patches got annoying which is why I made this build how it is, they’d have to mess with some major mechanics to break this one. Honestly best farm despite what others might say is Marobashi. It’s predictable, tons of loot, and Amrita for days. Throw in a sake for a boost and you’ll climb quick.

gradeAbra I got it through random reforging. I’ve seen it once before when tempering as well. Only appears on the Kote.

gradeAbra since it is an ethereal stat (orange text) it can only appear on ethereal gear. It’s pretty rare regardless. Comes in handy against ninjas like Okatsu.

This build plays with me well. I mainly play blood borne, so I just play low stance spear. And I never thought of using full dmg stats, since Y’know, glass cannons in SoulsBorne are a deathwish.

After playing, and Platinum-ing, Sekiro I wish there was a more aggressive parry mechanic in Nioh 1 or 2. I adored being able to go toe-to-toe with anything and anyone as long as you, the player, were good enough. My Kensei build in Nioh was the closest I could get to being godlike but still vulnerable all at the same time.

King Kerfuffle oh, ok. That makes a lotta sense actually. I’ve been spending ages tryin to perfect a build in Nioh for a similar thing, and I’ve found that kusarigama dodge attacks are very well rounded, so if you try and dodge through attacks and punish like that, it works pretty well also. I don’t like kusarigama tho, so it’s not that fun for me, and spear dodge attacks are slower than a snail with leprosy trying to learn how to swim.

Is strength only used to heavy Armor and axe? Isn’t 200 strength a bit over since I heard 99 strength could keep you under 70 percent even if u wear the heaviest armour.

Hey! New player here! :) I'm kinda lost on how should I level up my stats early game, do you have any suggestions? I'm enjoying A LOT the katana/spear combo so I split my level ups between Body and Ki, but I'm afraid that neglecting other stats might not be a good idea (though I still don't understand what the hell Magic does lol)

Raein welcome! So the game states that there is a buff to using certain weapons in relation to that stat, which is true, but it’s almost negligible by itself. It really depends on what kind of weapons you are using, but each weapon will have 3 stats listed and how each translates to damage towards that weapon. For example, my sword has B+ from heart, C+ from Skill, and D+ from strength. My spear has B+ from Body, C strength, and C skill. Because both weapons get a bonus from strength and skill it’s good synergy to level those stats up. Another problem is that the Body stat really only gives a raw boost to health. I think you’re better off putting points into Heart which helps with Ki and is more valuable then health in my opinion. Magic is great when used in the right scenario. My build uses part of the Kigetsu set which gives me Attack buffs for every negative debuff I have active at one time. Example time again. Carnage grants an attack buff but then lowers defense. Leeching grants a stronger attack buff but drains my health. Attack buffs from magic/ninjutsu don’t stack, but debuffs do. So I’ll use carnage and then leeching which gives me two debuffs and the stronger leeching Attack buff. If I do it in reverse order I’ll end up with the weaker carnage Attack buff. Because debuffs stack I can pile on a bunch of negative garbage which makes my attacks even stronger due to the benefits of the Kigetsu set. So when picking your magic/ninjutsu, pick the ones that sync with your build objective.

HIEP CHU much like my answer regarding your weapon level question, the character level max is also tied to the difficulty level you have played. Level 750 is the max level you can reach when playing on the highest difficulty, Way of the Nioh. Essentially you have to get to New Game ++++.

Sean Holeman only options are either farming revnants since all revenant weapons that aren’t already part of a set will turn futsunushi, or defile floor 34 of the abyss and leave on floor 37. There’s a one in five chance it’ll drop as Futsunushi.

Gamer Xtreme that’s entirely up to you and how you want to play. I would always have a CTA stat that matches whatever your highest stat is (heart, skill, etc.). If you’re in A agility (blue) then take Agility, If you are in B agility (green) then take Familiarity, and then anything heavier take Equipment Weight (yellow or red). The rest is up to you.

Gamer Xtreme at the bottom of each weapon will be three stars that act as damage multipliers. Each one has a rating for how that stat will give a damage bonus to your weapons. Focus on putting points into stats that reflect this, especially stats that are cumulative across both weapons. For instance my sword and spear both get a buff from Skill and Strength, so I maxed out both of those stats.

Gamer Xtreme there is a stat called Tenacity you can get on your armor or accessory that will keep you from dying from recurring damage like poison or the life drain from the Leeching talisman. However if you get hit by anything you’ll still die. You’ll be amazed at how good you can get when anything and everything can kill you instantly.

I've watched your video 100 times and I still don't get it - I have ~600lvl, 4500 dmg in stat-cs, 4050 dmg on my sword 300+40 (CTA heart A+, 20% CCD, A Fam bonus), keigutsu's 4 pieces, Futsu's 6 pieces, hino-enma and some others bonuses like agility bonuses on my range weapon... and i deal 82k vs your 180k (without negative effects) and ~200k vs your 999k (with negative effects). I don't believe everything will change when i get yours ~5000 dmg... Spirits - Kato and mouse (don't remember its name) I'm very very sad cuz i don't understand what i did wrong... sry for bad eng

Klaudo lol, you may be using the wrong armor. Sanada has two sets that are nearly identical, and unless you have the chest and waist the same it won’t show the white overcoat (Jinbaori).

marcie jackson` make sure that you have the stat “Tenacity” on either a piece of armor or an accessory. It keeps you from dying from any “damage over time” effect like fire, poison, and even leeching. You’ll be left with 1 health, but you’ll be alive.

This build doesn't work, with abyss floor 500 gear and literally same setup + Attack boost (Critical) this does barely 700k with all buffs/debuffs and weakness. Gonna stick with my Tonfa build.

My hair is made of cats, your argument is invalid. Not sure what to tell you. I put this build out in version 1.20 and did the boost to one million damage in a single hit video in 1.21. Haven’t played in a minute but I’m pretty sure a patch hasn’t come out nerfing it. That and I still have yet to take my gear over +50 because I haven’t found the need to do so, but then again I almost don’t want to for fear of making the game too easy.
