Hi Niomi, I'm from Mauritius and a big fan of yours..the recipe looks amazing and i'm going to make it real soon :)

Haha I'm from Mauritius & this looks NOTHING like our dishes. We never ever put peppers, courgettes or butternut squash in any masala of any kind. It looks nice, but its just not Mauritian.

Mel SYL might just be the UK version of yours then o.O

im from Mauritius and i know this is not a Mauritian dish...but it is a dish inspired by the masala used in Mauritius. :) Niomi has just re-appropriated the masala in her own way!

She never said that this was original Mauritius but it was inspired by it. And when its about food please do not make such comments ever again, rather share your own recipe if you are about to comment. Same food is made even in its own country on 100 different ways. You make variety on it by your own liking. That's point of cooking and enjoying in making home made dish

As someone who takes pride in my own cultural heritage and my own culture's food, I didn't take offense to Mel SYL's comment at all. Mel wasn't hating on Niomi, but was merely sharing what ingredients aren't common in Mauritian cooking. Niomi never calls the recipe authentic, but the title does say "Mauritian Masala," as opposed to "Mauritian Inspired Masala," which could be misleading to some. There's no reason to say "please do not make such comments ever again." Some of us who aren't from Mauritius may want to know more about the authentic cuisine and how this recipe differs from it, myself included.

What could I use instead of the courgette? I'm trying to find a substitute for it since it's so hard to find courgettes where I live :(

I know Niomi loves spicy food but this was WAY too spicy for our family - it was inedible :/ Ended up adding 400mls of coconut milk to it and then topped each plate with either more coconut milk or natural yogurt. It was very yummy and had great flavour but it was too much for us! Will definitely make again but will just halve the spices :)

well, dont add chilli then?
