Why are people debating the decision? This is judged under jmma rules. Who came closest to finishing the fight? Hansen. He more or less nullified the majority of Gomi's attack, while in the process almost submitting him. Fight is judged as a whole, not a breakdown of rounds.

I honestly do not see any significant strikes landed by Hansen. I never watched this fight and assumed he beat Gomi fair and square. It's one of the best wins on his resume. But I do not think Hansen won this fight.

It was because of the way Shooto fights were scored--near submissions, at the time, were the equivalent of knockdowns, basically. A "catch" resulted in a 10-8 round.

not really. he just had the advantage there. there are no standups in japanese mma so gomi was forced to either grapple with him or eat leg kicks. it was an incredbly smart gameplan from hansen.

So you're saying Hansen spent 2x5 minutes on his back trying to kick Gomi. I would suggest either eye surgery or getting some education because you obviously have a great misunderstanding about the concept of time. If you have no idea how he won maybe this sport is not for you. Perhaps you should be glad you're not the referee. I think perhaps American Wrestling is more you.
