The lyrics, "Come doused in mud, soaked in bleach" were taken from a campaign in Seattle that encouraged heroin users to soak their needles in bleach after injecting to reduce the risk of spreading HIV. The phrase for the campaign was actually "If doused in mud, soak in bleach."

Kurt was a genius on using oxymorons and homonyms, all of his songs are full of those tipes of rhetorical devices, on nevermind, al most every song have those.

I think you alluded to it near the end Vin, but Kurt does not get enough credit as a vocalist. His vocals touch my soul. They can be raw, aggressive, dirty, but also vulnerable and melodic. He had a fantastic sense of melody and tone and was more concerned with conveying specific emotions. He is often compared to John Lennon in that facet.

Exactly hard to believe they havent heard this song or any other nirvana song, i mean the band was everywhere in the 90's every radio station, around the world. Respect to Kurt, one thing people needs to be clear: Kurt never took his lyrics too seriously those were written in the last moment before going to the studio, for him the music and melody was the most important thing.

Nirvana is my favorite band of all time, I love all three of their albums and all of their songs. The thing with Kurt and the idea of the grunge scene was that they were seemingly simple songs that anyone could play cuz that was the point. And a lot of the times the meaning behind lyrics was known only to Kurt unless he outright said it or you started like really grasping at straws to find a hidden meaning. This is extremely evident in the song “on a plain” he mostly wrote the music first then just wrote whatever lyrics sounded good to him and used them unless he wanted there to be an exact meaning to the song.

I was in 7th grade social studies when a kid who I would have generally considered a tough guy walked into class just bawling. The teacher asked him what’s wrong and he said “Kurt Cobain killed himself.” I remember thinking...who’s that? I was just getting into Metallica and Megadeth at the time. When he told me who he was, I didn’t really have a response. It was kind of a whatever moment. Within the next couple of years, however, I really got into Nirvana and there was always this profound emotional response to a number of their songs, knowing what had happened. I can’t even imagine what people who were huge fans before he took his life must feel. There was a time I enjoyed Linkin Park and I was definitely a fan of Soundgarden and Audioslave back in the day, but Bennington and Cornell had achieved so much and were in their 40’s and 50’s, respectively. Nirvana was at peak popularity and Cobain was 27 years old. To lose a hero in that particular way when they are still so young and successful must have been very difficult to come to terms with.

I’ve always thought it was about people being who they are, no matter what people believe them to be and how they judge you.

The song is about Kurt's relationship with heroin. 'Come as you are' because heroin doesn't care how f*cked up you are or how you come, it's got you however you are. 'take your time, hurry up, choice is yours don't be late' because either way it knows you will end up coming to it. 'I swear that I don't have a gun' meaning it's not forcing you to use but you can't help it and if you do you are staring down a loaded gun.
