@@davidporter671 - Kurt was way more principled than most musicians creatively. Musically, a "cynical son of a bitch" as Krist put it. Dave was/is a whore that tries to please everyone, with a commercial heart like most. I can see where you'd want to lump Kurt in with the rest of them but I guess you haven't really looked into Kurt's mindset very much outside of his lyrics. He had legit hate for "those guys." Even though he wasn't my favorite Seattle musician, I think out of them all he was the least likely to take a shitty route musically. But yeah, it's all speculation at this point.

This is really cool sounding, but it also shows how much of role Butch Vig's production on Nevermind contributed to its success. Although the songwriting and performances would still be there, I don't think it would have gone as mainstream as it did if it sounded like Bleach.
@Steaminlidz
@Steaminlidz 2 жыл бұрын
A lot of the sweetening of ‘Nevermind’ is Andy Wallace’s mix. If you can find a version of Butch Vig’s mix of ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ it doesn’t hit as hard as the Andy Wallace mixed version that everyone heard on MTV and the radio in 1991. That’s what sold all those copies of ‘Nevermind’.
@GeorgeLocke
@GeorgeLocke 2 жыл бұрын
I feel like the production team really butchered the material. Nevermind is way over produced. I don't think this rendition here is better, but the album is so textured and rich it has very little punk feeling to it at all.
@Steaminlidz
@Steaminlidz 2 жыл бұрын
@@GeorgeLocke In context at the time, it bridged the gap between much more commercial and slickly produced rock and more indie/alternative styles. It might sound dated now, but there’s no way that ‘Nevermind’ would have got played on the radio the way that it did without that mix. (And again, it was Andy Wallace’s polish, not Butch Vig. If you listen to other pre-Nevermind Vig productions like ‘Gish’ by Smashing Pumpkins or Killdozer - they don’t sound as shiny as ‘Nevermind’).
@topher4677
@topher4677 2 жыл бұрын
@@Steaminlidz Cool info, I didn't know that. I saw clips of Butch Vig talking about the recording of the album and mistakenly thought he mixed it too. I do think Butch Vig contributed in a big way if the recording sessions went as he described them, where he had to practically drag Kurt kicking and screaming into doubling vocals and tricking him into laying down extra rhythm guitar tracks.
@Steaminlidz
@Steaminlidz 2 жыл бұрын
@@topher4677 Yeah, it was already a big change from recording with Jack Endino on an 8-Track machine ($600 budget vs. $65k). Big studio, big Neve board, a variety of different mics and guitar amps.. all that. But, there’s a lot of effects on the mix. You can hear a chorus effect on the bass (the ‘Symphony’ setting on the Yamaha SPX90) which is an Andy Wallace trademark. Plus all the reverbs and gates on the drums. It’s a very “mixed” sounding record. But, it’s a major label record that they wanted played on the radio. (And they did the same when they got Scott Litt to sweeten the mixes on the singles for ‘In Utero’ as well, so they can’t have been that disappointed by it…)

Great job nailing the SLTS riff. It seems so simple, but many people leave out the little details that Kurt might have done on purpose or due to sloppiness, but make all the difference and give the riff it's character and soul. Not even Beato got it right.

It's really interesting to hear how Kurt's playing changed between the albums. Lots more space between the chords, more defined strumming patterns, but with a looser feel. What would be good is if you record the bass and drums in a similar style, and mimic the more frantic, aggressive style that Kurt had on Bleach to hear everything in context.

What’s cool about what you’re doing here, aside from tone comparison, is that Kurt didn’t want the huge layered sound that Butch got during the sessions. Kurt preferred a more raw, single take (Bleach sounding) punk rock tone & composition. In order to get him to layer the guitars Butch would make excuses to get Kurt to do multiple takes, for example he’d say a string was a bit out of tune or something to that effect. He tricked Kurt into getting that sound!😆😆 That along with the pop over & undertones in the Nevermind material turned it into the monster that it became. Thanks for posting man, good stuff. Rock on bro!!!!!

One thing is that there is an A in the breed riff at the end wheras you’re playing it open, which didn’t come in until later. Kurt plays this note in the recorded version as well as in the 1991 concerts but later on ditched it and just played it open, so if you’re playing recorded versions or at least early versions in a bleach tone then you should include the a. I would also say that there are a few 1989 versions of these songs. Good video.

i like the sounds and you play the songs well! I think what Butch Vig objected to was Cobain relying on the Boss DS-1 for his tone rather than an amplifier. At least the Fender is a tube amp. I am not saying that solid state amps are bad or don't have their place (especially today's stuff), but tube amps definitely have their own sound, even more so back then!!!! Vig wanted Cobain to get his distortion from tube amp gain rather than a pedal, so he brought out the Bassman. Plus, he sometimes double-tracked guitars to thicken it up. Thanks!!!

Territorial pissings sounds exactly like how the Devonshire mix sounded on the nevermind deluxe version, honestly I think nevermind with the bleach tone is more like what the band wanted nevermind to be originally but we’re stuck with the pitch perfect pop mixes

More than the riffs and the guitar tone I believe it's Butch Vig's production that gives nevermind it's distinctive sound (wich I dislike) over the other albums. Steve Albini nailed it in In Utero, sounds like a professional, clear record without losing the grunginess and rawness that is missing in Nevermind

hello please play in bloom with chorus pedal and distortion pedal turn on together because it gives a 1980s metal chorus and distortion

iirc Kurt really didn't like nevermind, so it feels weird having the style changed more towards the original.

Switching from the DS1 to DS2 allows to play slower songs that are more about chords than riffs (if that makes sens). Personnaly I love the DS1, but it is more about overdrive than distortion.

Meh.... The difference sounds to me like as if it's just being played through a cheap Crate amp with a little extra crunch and no reverb, VS a Fender amp with slightly cleaner settings and some reverb. As for the absence of a small clone, I had always used a 2x12" Peavey stereo/chorus amp and stock foot switch to imitate it fairly well (from 1998-2003, then I blew out the 600w speakers, went into a long depression and spiritual downward spiral and quit writing and playing because I couldn't ever get laid, LoL)....but I digress.

lithium can be played in standard but the first chord is a D then f# then B then G then A# then c then A and back to C. tune it down half a step you Can play it the way he was playing it sounding like the album (which is half step down)

Nice sound. But there is a lote of diference beetwen univox phase 4 or a phase 3. Phase 3 has more output sound range. Imagin played with it. As always pleased to whatch your videos. I only whatch all videos of three Nirvana tone channels, and you are one of them. You, Jq and Aaron Rash are in deserverd podium. Keep doing those videos

I think it's more the production than the actual guitar tone. Nevermind is super clean and slick. Bleach is, obviously, really raw and dirty. I'd be more interested in Nevermind with Bleach production.

I always thought that Bleach was such an ear-bleedingly ugly sounding album. Definitely the runt of the studio album litter. I always thought that it was the tone but I think this video proves that it was some of the early song-writing. Almost everything goes smoother the second time around.

When you do the low E or F chords it sounds almost like it is down tuned or something. Really thick sounding despite the tone being very bright on most chords.

Doesn't really sound that different if I'm being honest. A little more saturated maybe. However don't forget Bleach had a 2nd guitarist. Bleach is still my 2nd favourite Nirvana Album.

You’re playing the chorus to come as you are slightly off. Need to strum the first, second and third strings open and it gives a strange tone. Most people play that wrong.

Maybe Kurt wanna mix a little of bleach sound in to the steve albini vision of the sound from the record and then they mixed up in a sort of way because i don't found any big difference on the sound. Just a little more of reverb and gain Extra fact some songs were played before Nevermind and kurt have in mind the sound of they like In Bloom
