What exactly is consciousness - There is no clear answer. Can it exist without Mind - since we can not define what do we exactly mean by 'consciousness' we can not attach it to anything neither mind as a whole nor the ways the parts of our body experience things, like Oxytocin - The love hormone also breeds jealousy or various neurotransmitters who make us experience everything like fear, danger, pain etc. Intellect & power of reasoning is essential for us to understand the world around us in Scientific way but that's not the end all & be all otherwise we would not be using tautological methods like Maths to create proofs for Scientific observations but we do because we know the aspects of nature that can be proven using these methods but we also know that we have to work with a lot of assumptions to move our understanding further. The real question is - Are most humans willing to change their beliefs in the presence of contrary facts & that's where the real difference lies - A seeker would always be willing to new ideas & opinions while most people would not like to be challenged since they are essentially busy with scavenging resources for their survival. To answer your 2nd question we again have to go back to the question i asked - What exactly is consciousness ? Till we don't have an exact answer for it we can only keep seeking further in all the ways that helps us in calming down & tackle these challenges head on using all our tools like Science, tautology, philosophy etc. The songs simple message is to be humble & don't attach yourself to the worldly pleasures, be a seeker & enjoy the pleasures of being a seeker.

This video reveals, is in my opinion the ultimate in Hindu spiritual thought. Make sure the subtitles are on. One of India's greatest Gurus, Shankaracharya, just at the age of ten or so, was asked "who are you?" and this apparently was his reply, these verses. As the person chants it, we need to imagine that it is indwelling God within us that is chanting it. Shiva Oham means "I am Shiva." For a Shiva devotee, Shiva is not just a deity in idol form to worship, but the mind and energy of the whole universe, simply given a name, Shiva. Means auspicious, pure. Interestingly Shiva is often used by Hindus to refer to destruction, the deity associated with destruction, part of the triad of origin (Brahma) preservatiion (Vishnu), and destruction (Shiva). The chant emphasizes that the core, the essence, of what is alive, is God, the One energy of the universe. Often Shiva is the mind, and Shakthi the energy. Mind and energy combined. Energy guided by consciousness, which is what many scientists/physicists feel is the essential nature of the universe. God is not a father figure in the heavens, S/He pervades every molecule, every strand of DNA. So the chant says, "I" (Shiva) is the One who transcends the body, the senses, the mind, the ego, everything and yet is part of it. Chidaananda Roopaha Shivoham: (Chit, consciousness, Aananda, Bliss, Roopa is form): I, God, (Shiva) am the form of eternal consciousness, the source of bliss and am bliss. There are many names for the infinite One, and Shiva is the preferred name for Shiva worshipers. In the Vedas, they used words such as Isha (eesha) and Brahman. Nirvaana means without form, the ultimate emptiness, also used in Buddhism as the ultimate goal; It is really Shatakam and not Shatkam.
