I was there. In front, stage left. I see my head. After the last song they carried Kurt surfing overhead from the stage, halfway to the back of the club. Then he walked over to the bar, sat on the floor fiddled with his shoelaces and talked to us for about 15 minutes,,,,stuff like saving the planet, and our music and our bands. After, as Kurt walked away a few feet I said his name, and gave a peace sign....you know he walked right back up to me, looked me straight in the eyes and said....yea, exactly....peace!!! That was magic!....then came Nevermind a few months later.....but that night I just knew they were great. Thanks again for all the music Nirvana....PEACE

Scruffy P Hmmm... anything more satisfying? Well let's see now. How about having that beautiful pile of luck 1 has in getting chance to see this little known show of the pre-dawn Nevermind era & go even 1 step further for this Nirvana fan here (yours truly). That is wait until your fav track is to play. That track here, at least among all of what's found within this setlist, would be Aneurysm. Then just scream out in joy as luck would have it, the video just happens to falter out ONLY right after Aneurysm is to have started playing. And then Voila! Right when the track is coming to its end does the video just miraculously start to work fine again! I mean WOW! Talk about satisfaction at its finest!

I fucking love this video. It's right before they got really huge and you can really feel their energy, like "holy shit guys we're actually doing it!!" When they start Polly at 43:35 there's that guy in the crowd who screams "POLLY WANNA CRACKER!" and then starts singing along with Kurt and Kurt starts laughing, like he's so amazed that someone actually knows his lyrics. I love this era of the band because it's before fame made them jaded and cynical.

I was literally just commenting that it's insane that less than 1 year after this show they were on stage at the VMA'S calling out Axl Rose and Kurt was probably the biggest rock star on the planet. This guy at this little club in New Haven was a rock God a few months after this. Trippy. That happened FAST.

September 26th, 1991. Nevermind was only 2 days old, and it hadn't exploded yet. This is unreal....I don't think anybody in the crowd had any idea Nirvana was about to be one of the biggest bands in the world in only a few months. They are still playing like a grunge band from soggy Aberdeen Washington, in a dive bar somewhere hidden in an alleyway. Really unique time, makes this footage very meaningful. It's the end days of life as these 3 guys knew it

Watching this, realizing it is just before Nevermind explosion, you can see the band hitting on all cylinders. Kurt is really into his performance as well. He even realizes the band is onto something and the crowd energy is electric. This is a rare glimpse pre-fame at Nirvana at their peak.

The next night on the 27th they would play City Gardens in Trenton NJ which WAS a legendary punk venue. My parents would drive me there for shows and they had no idea what type of place it was lol. Missed Nirvana that night because I didn’t know who they were. Two nights later Kurt and Dave watched themselves on MTV for the first time from a Pittsburgh hotel room when 120 minutes played Smell Like Teen Spirit for the first time.

funny, people out here in washington act like they own this band. esp. seattlites. they were from aberdeen, the armpit of the pacific NW and seattle "scoffed" at them when they first attempted seattle. this show was on the other side of the nation in fucking new haven CT (pizza mecca of the usa), b4 nevermind dropped. kris novaselich, even tho he says like he doesnt remember it now, was quoted as saying this was among if not his fav. all time show. we were there en masse. kurt put 25 of us on the g list, prompting the rightfully pissed promoter to "ban" them from any further shows there. not that it mattered. they were playing huge venues next month instead of seedy old ex-stripper bars. good times. kurt wasnt on dope at this show. all we could get for him was cough syrup.

this is one off the most important music videos i have ever watched. just before nevermind , tiny crowd, and the happiest Kurt ever was. he wanted to be like the melvins, black flag etc. and would have been happy to slowly build up a reputation over 20 years, instead we all know what happend and nevermind shattered him as he felt like a sellout. unfortunately what he didn't realize was he was such an artful composers and beautiful at phrasing his songs that he was never going to be a long term underground band, the music spoke to us all in our teens at the time across the world !

A little behind the scenes info. During the day of this show, Nirvana rolled up to FMC Associates in Watertown, CT at 12:00 pm. They had a dead Ampeg SVT bass head, brought to US to fix. We had to overnight parts etc to fix it. Meantime the band was hanging out in our shop till we could locate from the music Stores we did repairs for a bass Amp for them to rent for the Moon show. We located a new Ampeg SVT from Brian Guitars on Amity rd in New Haven however he wouldn't rent to them! (afraid never see it again). So we rented in our shops name and paid Brian's telling the band we would add it to there bill. Curt was so positive about things then. He was telling us they where going to be really big. He gave us an original copy of SLTS with the original cover. Dave was just mellow, mostly practicing on a pillow in our lounge. Don't remember much about Chris that day. My Partner Rich followed the bus down to New Haven to get the amp head from Brian's. Then went to the Moon. U had to stay to close the shop do I never went. Next day we finished the repair on Chris's Amo head and the once again came back to FMC to get it. The bill with all the charges was around $300 . Kurt happily Wrote us a check from their tour support account. We said goodbye and the band was off. I guess Brian's was right about renting to them. That check bounced, a further testament that tour lost money! Great to finally see the show I missed!

I actually think this is JUST a little bit too small to be ideal for Nirvana. This is the right-size club for like a shitty but lovable punk band, where the playing isn't very good but you're there for just the chaotic energy. Nirvana on the other hand, possessed some of that energy, but could actually play, and had great songs, haha...just using the drums as an example, the combination of Dave being too cramped along with his drums not being mic'd properly means he can't really NAIL some of those awesome gorilla drum fills he does, and it takes away from their overall power a little bit. I'd say maybe double the size of this venue, still GA only (obviously) would be perfect for them.

There is nothing like seeing a band equipped to play a huge venue in an environment intimate enough for a local band...I got to see Radiohead, for example, on a special tour they did to roadtest then-new material--it was nowhere near THIS small, but it was standing room only, and I got right in front of the stage...something special.

12truk great image in the context of music industry is a distinctive image that helps sell the band by making them stand out. They also set fashion trends that are alive to this day. That's a great image for rock, not a well tailored suit.
@hazelhumor
@hazelhumor 9 жыл бұрын
+Fer Abra I get what you mean. Anyway the whole point in Nirvana is that paradoxically, their image is just that they actually gave a shit to their image. They would just wear poor broken clothes because they didn't spend any money in buying "rockstar" clothes.
@ferabra8939
@ferabra8939 9 жыл бұрын
12truk Exactly. Not giving a shit about their clothes and buying them in the thrift shop made them stand out. They made Michael Jackson seem outdated in his "rockstar" clothes overnight, and defined what a rockstar looked like in the 90s. Great image.
@hazelhumor
@hazelhumor 9 жыл бұрын
+Fer Abra Yep, exactly. But what I meant is that they didn't do that intentionally. They were just being themselves. Then the media tried to bring a fashion out of it and that's actually one of the things that Kurt, Krist and Dave hated the most. They weren't up there because of fashion, they were just making music and having fun.

A lot of fans consider this one of their better shows from 1991 and you can see why. The band sounds good and the setlist is pretty great. But the reality was, just like the shows my band does, it was in a small club probably on a week night and they were just another cool Rock band. Just another night. But little did they know. Little did anybody know that by 1992 - the world was there's for the taking.

Sajan B not at this rate the earliest will be 5 years. There aren’t any music subcultures sprouting up right now and it’s slowed down even further due to the covid-19 outbreak so I’d say in 2026 or so should be the beginning of a new big band like nirvana in 89’. That’s just based off of how things were set up in the case of nirvana. Death of the hippie era was when Hendrix died and it was 19 years until Nirvana started. Right now we are at 26 years and counting since the end of Nirvana. So I’d say just a couple more than 2 years based off of music scenes right now.

davefusa We were collecting their bootlegs before Nevermind came out. The Subpop catalog from 1989 listed the Bleach album with the comment, "they have they're own van and they are going to make us filthy rich." I'm sure they had NO fucking clue just how true that statement was.

I was back in my dorm a couple mikes away studying for an Econ quiz during this show. Ugh. I had actually seen them earlier in the summer in Hollywood and figured I’d be a good student it being my freshman year and all. After watching this I got a pit in my stomach over having made such a poor choice. At least I got a chance to see them earlier that year-had I not done that I couldn’t live with myself. There are so damn good in this video. I caught them at the Palladium in Hollywood where the lineup was Hole, Nirvana and Dinosaur Jr. - an epic show.

I was backstage at this concert. I was President of the US at the time and had just landed on Air Force 1, nearby. The toilet on the plane was blocked, so myself and 4 secret service guys commandeered the toilets in this venue. I bumped into Kurt backstage and we talked about music and I showed him some of my songs. I didn't directly give him permission to use them, but I guess I never exactly said he couldn't, so I was okay with what happened next. Anyways, they got the toilets fixed, and I went back to just being the plain old President. But I'm proud to have been involved in the events depicted in this video.

Grohl is an outstanding drummer a good guitar player/singer/songwriter but he is a dick as far as I am concerned. I saw him in Milwaukee in 95 after the release of the first foo fighters album and what he did during the concert made me want to punch him in the face and I might have been able to since I was a friend of the head of security. As was typical in those days a young woman was on top of the shoulders of her male friend and someone came up behind her and lifted her top. Mr. Dave decided by himself to stop the performance and then he physically and verbally gave this guy and all of us a lesson basically ear fucking everyone with his insane feminist world view. I will never forget that Riverside theater performance. Pat Smear was awesome in that concert full of joy, great performance!

9:57 Kurt starts listening to how his guitar is tuned, as Dave starts playing over him, so Kurt gives him a stare like, "stop for a sec" then resumes tuning. 10:10 The high E string needs to come down just a bit, so he does that. Alright sounds a little better. 10:17 Plays the two E strings to compare(not too bad at this point), and suddenly just jacks the 1st and 2nd strings way up until it's way off. Like yeahh, don't use these two in this next song anyway, that's much more grunge now lol
