I always thought about this song being a story from the pov of Bowie. He has finally reached the height of his fame. After his performance, he walks backstage. He passes a figure in the shadows, one that he recognizes. It was that of a man whom he had heard rumors about in his circles in the depths of the music industry. The figure was a man who had reached the height of power and wealth. He made trillions off of the suffering and death of millions of people. He was the man who sold the world. Then, Bowie speaks with him. The song is about his brief, backstage, brush with a man so unbelievably powerful that no one even knows who he is.

Probably doesn’t mean anything to anybody but I was so into Nirvana that I signed up to play a talent show my freshman year of high school. We were allowed two songs. I was 15 and had only been playing acoustic for a year and a half. Two songs I chose was Man Who Sold The World and All Apologies. I had never used a distortion pedal. Ever. There was another band that was going to play after me. That guitarist was so cool to let me use his pedal. When they called my name to come up I was so nervous I about threw up on my way to the stage. I was shaking. Plugged my acoustic guitar in and said nothing. I hit the pedal and started the opening riff… then faded awkwardly as I hit the pedal again to go back to clean. I sang the opening line “We passed upon the stairs…” got all the way through the chorus and started to segway into the second verse. The guitarist that let me use his pedal came running to the stage, freaked me out, turned the microphone on and ran back to his seat. My heart sank. I continued anyway. When I was done I still got applause. I sheepishly said something like “that sucked” or “maybe you’ll hear this one” I can’t remember. I started into All Apologies, no distortion this time, just acoustic. It went really well. I was much more comfortable with that one as I played it all the time at home. I shouldn’t have picked the first song I did but oh well. There were seniors I hated in the front row. I focused on the one that was a big jerk to me as I sang “What else can I say? Everyone is gay.” He got super uncomfortable. LOL! As I ended that song I did it the way they did on the unplugged show. Just kept fading until I stopped my guitar and softly finished “All in all is all we are.” I got a much better applause on that one. I’ll never forget that experience. My kids were super excited to see that I was in the yearbook. Someone took my picture as I was playing. 😊

Man, I'm 70 years old but I miss Kurt. I can only imagine what kind of music he'd be playing today. I'm sure it wouldn't be pop-rock or dance music. This is a David Bowie song. You should listen to him doing it, too. Like Jim Morrison, Kurt is probably jamming with the rest of the greats up in heaven.
@wurstfinger32893 жыл бұрын
only that you didnt mention any "great musician"^^ its nice music, i listen to it sometimes to and enjoy it. but i mean i like it, if my children paint pictures for me and i hang them up. it doenst have to be ... hieronymus bosch, monet, van gogh or picasso all the time. in this picture, kurt cobain, jim morrisson and david bowie are the children and for example hiromi uehara, art tatum, miles davis, franz liszt, paganini, beethoven, bach and friends are the picassos of course.
@johnallen27713 жыл бұрын
@@wurstfinger3289 Well "great musicians" is a subjective term and people like all kinds of different music. Some people don't like Bach. Doesn't mean he wasn't great. If somebody is really good at what they do I don't care what kind of music it is, I pay attention. Kurt was good at what he did. Musicians don't want to be categorized or stuck in a box of some kind, they want to be free to explore and experiment with new things. That's why I hate it when you're at a concert and some yahoo keeps yelling out for the band to do some old song. It's much more interesting to see where a band is going and what they're creating that's new. The only thing I find it hard to listen to is "dissonance" when the notes are not in harmony in any way. That's just noise. I like everything from "Iko Iko" by the Dixie Cups to "29 Palms" by Robert Plant.
@wurstfinger32893 жыл бұрын
@@johnallen2771 "Well "great musicians" is a subjective term" no. "Some people don't like Bach. " i dont really like most of him. doesnt matter. i know what he did for the developement of music and which level of skill he had. i mean calling kurt cobain or clapton skilled guitarrists is ... well i say "not proven". " Kurt was good at what he did." yes. "It's much more interesting to see where a band is going and what they're creating that's new." depends if there was a positive developement, go for it. but in cultural industrialized productions, this is a rarity. "The only thing I find it hard to listen to is "dissonance" when the notes are not in harmony in any way. " thats somehting YOU dont like. go for your 3chordsongs your whole life. great musician of course reach for more. its not my problem if majorities stay in your nutshell the rest of their lifes^^ wont happen to me. "That's just noise." its just something you will never get because of your habits.
@johnallen27713 жыл бұрын
@@wurstfinger3289 Like I said, I'm 70 years old and music is my main interest. During my life I have heard so many different kinds of music from all over the world. There was a time during the '50s when some jazz musicians were experimenting with dissonance. The sound was quite chaotic/confused and not really pleasing to the human ear except as a curiosity and it didn't last long. But you can listen to the most intricate jazz and it harmonizes in some fashion no matter how obtusely. So I know the difference between harmony and dissonance. Even in ancient Africa the natives made drums that harmonized. And what is "cultural industrialized productions"?
@wurstfinger32893 жыл бұрын
@@johnallen2771 cultural industry in very short means enlightment as instrument of massdesception. culture in capitalistic societies has to follow the same dictation of capital, as the industrial production. most important is not the cultural aspect but the value-realization. its not about art, its about selling. so the product doesnt have to be cultural valuable, it has to be easy to consume, easy to understand. it has to have nothing challenging, nothing that could make the individual grow with it. it has to be that easy, that after a day of 8-10 hours work, you can just relax and do nothing, while this music is played. actually, you dont even really need to listen. you can do anything else parallel to it. so its not challenging products, its degenerative products. its a term not only usefull for music but also for movies, architecture, ... culture. you can see it everywhere, if you take a closer look. the theroy calls out 2 phases: before that, in the liberal days, art was used for progressive, emancipative, critical action with some impact. it was mostly about resistance. its been about free art and stuff. now, in the late capitalism, the art is not free anymore, because "freedom" doenst necessarily express itself in getting money. "free art" in the very most cases means poor artist. very poor artist. nowadays, art lost a lot of its substance. "under my umbrella ella ella e e e" (rihanna) or eric claptons always the same and not very various guitar"licks" as an example. he s not scofield, joscho stephan or david fiuzcinsky. the impact, that this has on society: the autonomous individual will be replaced by a hetereonomous one. thats what we can see all over the world. the "world of culture" becomes seperated in one very small part of real authentic arts and a big one, produced in an industrial way: mass production of easy things, no complex messages and so on. means: the art doesnt communicate or interact with the individual anymore, because the individual is degraded to a consumer. the topics will be only ... easy stuff, superficialities. cultural industry is massculture, as a weapon of assimilation. its as adorno and horckheimer said: "culture today is infecting everything with sameness".

there was nothing quite like the creative froth of the late 80's and early 90's as the Reagan era came to a close and alternative rock came to the mainstream sadly, we may not have another one of these eras. the digital music economy is a beast where the single dominates and is much a throwback to the corporate owned music economy of the previous decades . This revolution in the digital economy promised much but seems to have been a false promise, and it truly has been the last big revolution in music since Nirvana and the emergence and recognition of hip hop after his death which was a long time coming. the true next revolution may be in free sharing of music created and shared outside of it that allows for true genuine growth and experimentation
