@@JudgementKazzy87 The lyrics of both songs (David Bowie and Nirvana) are different, in the first one Bowie speaks about how its dealing with his alter ego (Zigie Stardust, a role that he played in 70's) and the way how the alter ego and Bowie becomes one after he realizes the alter ego always have been with him; by the other hand, in Nirvana's version Kurt speaks that he accepts his "past me" but his "present me" can't coexist with him and now (sort of like their personalities are separating from each other), in the way that he sings it, he's resigned of how's his life and how he lost his path; we can see this subtrama in the way that in the first song starts with "I" and ends with "We" and in the second one, starts with "We" and ends with "I".
@johnmalory263 жыл бұрын
Apparently Bowie liked Kurt's version. "I was simply blown away when I found that Kurt Cobain liked my work, and have always wanted to talk to him about his reasons for covering 'The Man Who Sold the World'" and that "it was a good straight forward rendition and sounded somehow very honest. It would have been nice to have worked with him, but just talking with him would have been real cool." Bowie called Nirvana's cover "heartfelt". "If the mark of a good cover is that people do not even realize it's a cover, Nirvana certainly did a good job"

Bowie (as far as i know) wrote this song with the influence of his brother, who was a cultured and intelligent young man that had dealt with serious mental health issues. Bowie had a good relationship with him, he also introduced many aspects of art and philosophy to Bowie, definitely influencing Bowie’s art. Bowie told that his brother would sometimes go on long trips and dissappear for long times. One day he went on another one of these trips, and eventually committed suicide by lying on the railway. RIP to all those beatiful souls we lost who were fighting their own demons.

The way this was played live with little to no mistakes is amazing, at the beginning it's relatively slow but you can see and feel them just jamming with the exact same tempo as each other yet slowly speeding up at throughout the song and it just gives it this sense of imperfect perfection, if the song was perfect it wouldn't be as real, but this cover is as balanced as you can get and all the while they're just chilling and having fun.
There are quite a few mistakes, if you're a guitar player you'll notice them. But they don't really impact the performance.

And also thats what kurt himself thought too. What makes this performance so special compared to other Nirvana live performances which are also good, nirvana focused on performing songs that were not well known to people compared to smells like teen spirit, lithium etc. they thus created this raw, acoustic sound which deliver Kurt’s pain so profoundly. We passed upon the stair We spoke of was and when Although I wasn't there He said I was his friend Which came as a surprise I spoke into his eyes I thought you died alone A long long time ago Oh no, not me We never lost control You're face to face With the man who sold the world I laughed and shook his hand And made my way back home I searched for form and land [Alt: I searched for foreign land] For years and years I roamed I gazed a gazeless stare At all the millions here [Alt 1: We walked a million years] [Alt 2: With multimillionaires] [Alt 3: We walked a million hills] I must have died alone [Alt: I must have died along] A long, long time ago Who knows? Not me I never lost control You're face to face With the man who sold the world Who knows? Not me We never lost control You're face to face With the man who sold the world

There's a magical moment that happens between Kurt's guitar solo and the cello at 2:57.

That was a true artist. You can't tell the difference if he sings unplugged or it's a song from CD!
@christian760AS6 жыл бұрын
You actually can. It sounds better in live than in a CD because a true artist improves with the time.

True. Also take a look at White Stripes (Jack White). They sound soooo much better live than in studio version. I love this point.

+Arti Noname the performances that weren't recorded were terrible. Either way the demos and "lost material" are the best.
