Just after Christmas break and like the third day of school return, a friend made me a tape of the Nevermind album, which he had gotten for Christmas of 91. Then the following weekend, this aired. I never missed an episode of SNL in those days. I was 16, almost 17. Great time to be a teenager.

I copied this live onto VHS. There was no Genius Lyrics back in 1992, so I played that tape endlessly, over and over, to learn the lyrics. How there can be this much meaning in a small number of screamed words amidst controlled chaos . . . it's still a bit magical to me. "Never met a wise man," but I heard him sing on TV once. I only wish wisdom was enough to compete against that much suffering.

I was 17, saw them twice. It was pretty fun being a teenager in Seattle back then, but as a kid you just couldn't quite grasp that you were living in the epicenter of the most massive musical paradigm shift since the Beatles.

Grunge isn't real, Nirvana always was a punk and metal influenced rock band. Kurt said he wanted to write songs that sounded like black flag and balck sabbath fucked up the beatles.

That’s because they were a punk band. They didn’t even come from the same scene as the big Grunge bands. They came up playing shows with punk bands. Grunge wasn’t even real. Just a label created to market rock music from Seattle.

Teen spirit woke me to rock back then in high school when rap was everything to me. Absolutely remember this show and my jaw dropping. Only knew their radio hits til this aired on MTV. Became a fan and saw punk for first time. My Beatles on Ed Sullivan moment.
