Fishing for marlins off the coast of Italy is just one of the many odd jobs he has taken on over the course of his journey, and it won't be the last one either. The author, too, played volleyball in high school and then moved on to other passions - if they hadn't done that, if they hadn't decided they wanted to create manga, we wouldn't have gotten this beautiful series in the first place. There's a give and take in everything. Nishinoya decided that there were other things he wanted to do with his life, and there are few things more worthy than devoting your life to learning and experiencing new places, cultures, people and customs. Is he a very good volleyball player? Sure. But that's far from all he is, and even further from all he wants to be.
