There is a traditional way of becoming a shogi professional which is to go through the apprenticeship league. For people who don't make it through the traditional path, if they are able to get 10 wins in official games vs professional players with a win rate of at least 65% they are eligible take the pro entrance exam which is essentially a best of 5 match vs the 5 most recent players to become professionals.
