My mom just bought a new car today (Volkswagen Taigo) and now her 20year old Nissan Almera N16 is mine!!! I think a very great first car to learn to drive on!

In Malaysia this was called a sentra XE slightly higher spec 1.6 . The car was responsive not to mention reliability was through the roof despite meeting a major accident at 180k km. We sold it at 250k km and was running well. Such a lovely car. Never had something this reliable as my other cars were BMW and Protons. Only drawback was poor rear legroom , also despite a rear torsion setup this cars handling was stellar.

This was the almost the last roll of the dice for Nissan in this segment, the Pulsar followed but didn’t last, in the UK at least. I worked for Nissan in the late ‘90s and saw this as a clay model and then drove early examples with competitors. Sadly, we knew early on it was worthy but dull but perceived. Driving against the, then new, Focus Mk1, Golf MK4 or even the Honda Civic we knew we were sunk😢 I once imported some accessories for a K11 Micra from Japan.. only when the technician was fitting the kit did we discover how very different the floor plan was!

Yes, the owner said they had a UK built one on a lift beside it and that there was a huge amount of differences between the two. I honestly never knew but I also had a friend contact me to confirm the car featured is a Japanese built model. In Ireland the Focus and Golf came with a wheezy 1.4l engine but they had much nicer interiors than the Almera. We also got the Tiida after the Almera.......not a bad car as such just an ugly design

Most saloon variants of Japanese cars were built in Japan. The Civic and the Corolla saloons were similar. Ireland was an unusual market in being western and having a penchant for saloons. The UK did not buy them at all and therefore that's likely why the factories there didn't produce them.

A lot of Corolla saloons sold here were built in Turkey and South Africa too

Had the Hatchback a few years ago. Was the face lift model. I have recently saved a 1998 Mk1 Punto. One owner from new and 47k miles on it.

@@JohnsGarageIreland same family since new. A few things I had to get sorted. Replace front and rear bumper. Replace rear light. Full service. New head gasket and water pump and timing belt. Paint is tired so done a T cut and looks allot better. I put a video up on my channel if you wanted to see.

The N16 was launched with a Sentra Name here in the Philippines, the face is similar to the JDM N16 1st gen launched in 2000, it was launched here in the Philippines in 2003 and the Gen 2 facelift, similar to the face which was released in Malaysia, was sold until 2014. I have the N16 alongside my 1st car the 1996 Nissan Sentra/SUNNY B13, the N16 I have is the base model which has power windows, manual tranny mated with the QG13DE has 550,000km in the odometer.

€28 a year between taxing a 1.4 and 1.5. What killed these I think was the resale value - and the dealers constantly pre-regging them, selling them to rental companies, and Nissans rental offers like buy an Almera get another one for free next year. They were just seen as a nothing car. From reading Inside The machine by David Twohig, and his time at Nissan - it seems they didn’t cut corners in terms of the cost of parts/materials and some of the engineering on the Almera - but they definitely dropped the ball overall, ironically the Qashqai, which was built to a much stricter budget, was far more successful.

The impact of the engine size on buyers perception here in Ireland was still big but you're right, Nissan were running buy one get one free next year offers to shift them. I'd argue the Qashqai had its own quality problems but regardless it was the car the market wanted and sold without issue. I still remember driving the first of them in 2007 and felt it tight inside.

Of course a friend who works in Nissan contacted me to say this after seeing the video but in my defence I only learned of it while talking to the owner on the day. I can confirm it's a Japanese built car!

You'd have to swap the entire front end. Glass headlights are miles better anyway

Had the original as my first car, a hatchback. I didn't appreciate it at the time. It handled & ride really well, even 1.4 engine was sweet. Think it got a whack up rear tho, never got rid of damp smell from boot...
