Nissan Patrol Engines TD42 vs ZD30 - [ Why Do You Have One ? ]

TD42 vs ZD30. Both engines have been around in Nissan Patrol s for many years.
The TD42 was first introduced into a GQ Nissan Patrol in the late 1980’s and it was phased out in 2007 when the Common Rail Diesel ZD30 took over.
The first ZD30 engine went into a GU Y61 Nissan Patrol in April 2000.
The ZD30 had a major design change in 2006 -07 when the Common Rail Diesel ( CRD ) became the motor for the GU Patrol, right up until 2016.
The production of the CRD ZD30 has now finished. End of an era for both engines.
Nissan sure have made very solid a reliable 4WD s over the years. The running gear in the entire Nissan Patrol range is pretty much bullet proof.
So, if you are looking at getting a Nissan Patrol, you have a couple of engines to consider.

2013 y61 with ZD30, owned from new, no mods. 338000 km, oil and filter every 10 to 20000 km, 2 x fuel pressure relief valves, 1 x replacement intercooler with welded tanks and 1 x clutch at 290000 odd km. Best car ever and can see no reason why it won’t double the km already on the clock.

Informative video Tim, and good to see that most of the comments are constructive and haven't devolved into a total slinging match (which is pointless). With regard to overheating issues on TD42's, they seem to respond well to having a high flow water pump fitted, and also when a fan is fitted to the underside of the top mount intercooler to draw air through.

I definitely wouldn't be averse to owning a ZD Patrol.....especially a late model with an auto as I reckon they'd be much easier to live with around town than my old TD. Having said that, I made my decision based on seeing 1st hand what crazy km's you can get from these engines, and that was my most important criteria. Mine has just clicked over 630,000, and the motor has never been out or rebuilt so I couldn't be happier. I would also suggest that the common denominator with both TD and ZD longevity is regular servicing and maintenance. 😊

I had a Zd30, great car but sadly the engine did blow up at 280k on the clock, I now own an 05 gu TD42 with 250,000k on it and absolutely love it yes it does overheat when going up steep hills when shes hot or towing my trailer, im running 35s with a 3" exhaust with all the goodies. The engine is pretty stock besides having a tune, and I just replaced the Clutch it took on the Cape with no major dramas. Other than that keep the videos coming mate

That’s not an easy question to answer mate. My Patrol is all setup. Coils all round. New engine would be the best option when you look at new 4wd designs these days. I’d stick with ol faithful. Cheers Tim

I bought my Y61 GU TD42 Patrol Ute new in June 2005. And I still have it. NO engine mods - and the only engine problem I have had was the altenator which just wore out. A new Altenator and not a problem since. Never had an overheating problem at all. It is now coming up to 300K on the clock and I have absolutely no intention of getting rid of it. It could use a little TLC, bodywise as it has always been parked in the weather and is now showing the effects of that. This is my 4x4 and my daily driver. Yes I would like something New and Shiny, but wouldn't we all? Cheers.

Just popped in to say bloody good video, I've got a 97 gu1 safari 4.2 turbo previous owner had it running high boost and got it hot like said in your video he was trying to race it , since ive owned it ive rebuilt the motor at 610,000km and reset pump etc to factory then bumped it up slightly, also fitted front mount intercooler and thermo fans, 3 inch exhaust and snorkel plus air box now at 679000kms going strong still no overheating issues but now I've said it you never know. I have the april 06 zd30 navara, no intercooler, no bonnet scoop. 157000km. Always serviced. Such a strong motor and I push it pretty hard, even towing a 2T camper trailer.

G'day; I have had my TD30 since 2004 new (manual). It has now 315k on it and runs as good as ever. No mods except a chip and a catch can. Never had a problem and only ever needed to change 1 clutch and 1 alternator. I am definitely holding on to it as I can't fault it. Never missed a service and I have looked after it very well. Done a lot of highway and dirt roads but never really rough 4wding.

A bit off topic Tim , I had two FJZ80 series and have got 500,000 kms out of both of them Economy aside they’re good cheap fun. No overheating issues , no intercoollers , no high EGT’s. Drive them , change filters at 5,000. Power to burn I rarely rev past 3,000rpm. Parts everywhere No issues with diesel complexities. Big ballsy motor in a modern wagon exterior. Love it

Hi Tim First mod I did was 3inch exhaust then intercooler have a hpd and then a 4inch stainless snorkel and a air box upgrade with a pod filter. So I have 4inch to 3inch air flow took out 95%of the lag and dropped gets heaps it’s a 2003 di I found independence motor sport in Morwell they pull the ecu out send it away to be remapped and unlocked. Then it’s able to be Dyno tuned the tune is for towing my van better just better toque not huge power. New oil every 5000klms has 235000klms on it look after a diesel they will look after you.

I have had 2001 ZD30 from new. Now on 260000km apart from a fuel pump issue at about 200k it’s never missed a beat. Regular servicing but no mods. I’m about to splash some cash an go for 3” exhaust, gauges and a catch can. Hopefully it will continue to run well.

Tim, I can’t believe you didn’t mention reduction gears I’ owned a 2004 GU TD 4.2 Ute & then went to a 09 CRD GU wagon (still in the family and will come back to me one day, I love this vehicle) But when I first bought it I hated it & was thinking what have I done. In the bush they just don’t have the low down torque to take on obstacles slow and in control. But what a difference a set of transfer case gears made, turned it into an absolute weapon in the bush. I would nearly say the best modification you can do to GU CRD (along with lockers) I’m building a 1999 TD 42 GQ coil cab up atm and reduction gears are going on again. With the right mods the CRD can be a great as a 4.2 Cheers

Got 545k on my td42, front mount, 18psi, never had any issue with overheating. It doesn't matter what you do to it, the TD42 doesn't like more than 25psi. Run a top mount with anything over 20psi & you WILL run into overheating issues. I've seen far too many stuffed crd 3.0's to ever consider one for myself. One dodgy injector with the crd & it's rebuild time. Same issue with a TD & it just won't run real well until you replace the injectors. The TD has solid timing gears to so no timing belt/chain to service. Can't beat the TD for reliability through simplicity. Like you said, the TD will get you home & being a remote solo traveller, that is the most important thing to me.

Also i looked at some TD42s on Wikipedia and it turns out that they do a semi fuel injection version, which means only the fuel pump is controled while maintaining the mechanical action of the fuel injectors

I’ve got a TD running 27psi with a top mount and never have overheating issues even running 37in tyres. Before I had a ZD30crd with a turbo and cooler upgrade on 35’s it was a great reliable engine as long as you always have a spare belt tensioner. The TD makes its power easier than a ZD30 that has to rev harder.

Little bit of my story on this topic. In 2015 I made the decision to purchase a Patrol. I had my heart set on a 05-06 td42ti in the S4 shape. I searched and searched with nothing under 50k with under 200,000. I found a nice one in Adelaide and flew there from Sydney only to find that for 52k and 154000 it had rust, receipts for engine work (from broken shit) ect. I was disappointed non the less for the amount of money it was for a molested 4wd. For 2k more I could get a brand new off the show room 3ltr CRD with 15kms on the clock. I spent 4 weeks ringing different mechanics, engine rebuilders and tuners along with reading a lot of forms and all my feed back was this. The CRD is a good strong motor, unlike the Di you would be hard pressed or doing dumb shit to blow a CRD up. They are no different to any other modern CRD on the market in that respect. A good tune and some preventative mods will have them last. Needless to say I purchased one. 6 years later and only 80 000 not exactly big numbers to report back on but the only issue I have had are from me modding it haha, others then that the engine starts and purrs like the day I started it in the show room I would be more then confident it will take me anywhere in Aus and home 👌 up the ZD CRD 💪

Hiya bud I'm new to patrols and trying to learn as much as I can with them I'm in the UK and noticed that early Y61 over here had a TD6 2.8 and then the ZD30, I'm seeing mostly TD42 and ZD30 videos on here from Australia did you guys not have the TD6 2.8 or is that more a European option and if so is it a good engine or one to avoid? Gday mate We did get the 2.8 Patrol over here in Australia, they just weren’t very popular. The 2.8 was a petrol. A mate of mine once had one, but converted it to straight gas. It went well. The Zd30 and TD42 are the main to engines in the GU Patrol over here. I’d probably steer clear of the 2.8 and look at one of the other two engine sizes. The 2.8 IV seen was advertised as a TD6 a 2.8 diesel but it had an issue with the injection pump which a couple of people have said to me that getting hold spares for that engine can be a nightmare it's a year 2000 so an early ish Y61 I think, I was half thinking it might be a candidate for a Merc OM606 swap

I run a redarc 2 in one gauge. The only reason i say this is because it is a game changer because it allowed you to set a max boost and max egt alarm where it chimes and glows bright red. Not having to look is very pleasant.

I have a 2002 GU TD42T, bought it factory spec zero mods. Urban driving temps were normal. But driving up a long hill on the highway egt would go 500+ and engine temps would go 95+. Later found out that the previous owner had turned up the fuel screw to “get more power” this is the issue with TD42s and owners not knowing what they are doing. Adding more fuel and boost will give more power but there is stil one part missing and that’s timing. With more fuel and boost you need the correct timing to match. I’ve done a fair bit of work on my TD42 and I’m making close to 200hp at the wheels on 25psi and I struggle to get egts more then 400. Only time I’ve seen above 400egt is towing the boat up a hill on the highway.

Im running 35psi in my td42 with a big daddy topmount intercooler. Never had a overheating issue and i druve it hard. I have a had a td with overheating issues and it turned out to be the face that the waterpump bolts upto had some minor capitation pitting. Fixed it and never overheated again.

It would be interesting to know what CC that is, as the petrol maybe on the joucy side, and it being a V8 then yea its going to be thirsty. I thought the Zd was still in production, and when i searched for patrols in the passed i am sure i saw a diesel option but that being said, i did see lately the V engine apear frequently. I didn't conect the 2 and 2. I don't know why they couldn't put a direct injection common rail in it, the DCI system is cleaner

Do you think the emitions failiours, come from people run rediculars high boosts, to run more boost means more fuel, and more fuel means more smoke. The td42 is a machanical motor as we all know, and loads of people like the td42 as a result, but that also means the machanics of the td42 make it easy for people to play with, vus the td42 popularity may speak for td42s in general.

I owned both, the ZD30 was far better on road than the TD42 but when it came to off road I found the 4.2 was better the one thing that gave me the shits with the ZD was the throttle when doing slow rock crawling. I actually sold my ZD because it cracked the head. Great video and I do think the ZD gets a bad wrap.

agree on the ZD throttle response. Since fitting an aftermarket throttle controller to my 2012 ZD 5 speed, i find it much easier to control when offroad in the rough stuff.

You can still get grey imports zd30s here in the UAE, but they are all sold on to other countries. No one really uses diesel here, even for working vehicles. You can also still buy the y61 with the 4.8l petrol. Even older ones with 300k+ on them fetch a good price. Just fantastic in the sand and you still see a lot of the Y61 pickups being used by businesses. The local lads love tuning the 4.8 to insane amounts of horsepower!I love my 2001 Y61, but I can’t imagine using at as a long term ‘tourer’ or ‘overlander’ outside of the GCC. You’d need to tow a tanker along with you. My daydream is to get a nice 90s Y60 with the red velour interior and some decals of the local sheikhs on the rear window and then have the 4.8 conversion done. That would be a real Gulf classic. Perhaps one day I’ll get to Oz and have the chance to drive a diesel Patrol.

Just look after your zd put a catch can on it change oil every 5-8000 I have my egr blocked and my glow plugs on a switch and help prevent cracking the head and I’ve have one problem with overheating and it was the thermostat 19 year old nav going strong

2005 ZD di 450,000 just over kms on the clock been unstoppable and never had a spanner to it. It takes me anywhere i point it in my books a winch is optional. Actually had to replace the alternator 😅 at 430,000kms

@@chinthakawickramarachchi9542 Hey dude. If you got a DI patrol and need extra power first thing to do is going with a Hi Flow air filter. Paper airfilter can suffocate. Just about to roll over 600,000 on my td. It's still stock as a rock penrite 20w60 every 5k, never done anything more than replace injectors, good compression, no blow by & needless to say, it's never even thought about getting hot. It makes a snail look fast but I wouldn't hesitate to take it to the Simpson tommorow.

My Zd30 Di 2004 model is running great 309.867kms on clock running strong done off road work with it on raod of course i tow a austrack camper that weighs 1400kgs and never had a drama I jave the nads kit as people call done egr blocked off Catch can Dawes valve Uograded intercooler all alloy welded tanks Just replaces the radiator with 3 core alloy one from fenix great radiator my temp gauge never goes over 1/4 temp Have egt gauge and boost aswell after market high flow turbo 3" stainless exhaust just looming at remap now for little bit more towing grunt other than that its running great service amd oil every 5000kms to 10.000 kms with out fail dont mind my zd30 to be honest

I’m in such a rut wanting to buy a 4.2 but right now they are around 30-35k average. Some up to 50+k. Although have been in second thoughts on the zd30 as I owned one and in 2 years I went through 2 radiators and 1 turbo. 2000 model. You said we can’t go backwards in having a zd30 and dropping a 4.2lt. So I couldn’t have a 2005 zd30 and drop a 2005 factory 4.2 or reconditioned into it? Thanks legend.

Talk it up all you like but I've owned both, upgraded both and so I know. Simple facts: ZD30 needs $5k for engine work to perform but even so is gutless off idle which kills low range off road. Cliff like drop in power over 3.5k revs means frantic gear shuffling on the highway. Max 1500 rpm usable rev range is hopeless. So auto is needed. And Yes they do grenade... TDI42 needs $15k for a real turbo, intercooler and fuel pump after which it will deliver 225kw to the rear wheels equalling a Malloo ute. Usable rev range is over4000rpm with smooth power all the way. Zero heating problems with good maintenance. Market says it all. Dozens of ZD30 avail for under $15k while TDI42 is $40k plus IF you can get one.

That’s totally up to you mate. Mine has 365000ks on the clock, and it’s still going strong. But I’ve had it since new and I’ve serviced it very well since buying the Patrol from new. I don’t know the service history of the Patrol you are looking at, and how it’s been treated. Like any second hand car, have them checked by a good mechanic. Cheers Tim

With the decline of sulphur in diesel fuel these days, do you use a substitute lubricant in the tank for your common rail diesel? I've been using the Fuel Doctor for a few months now and do feel the vehicle engine operates smoother. Just read that lubrication in the upper cylinder is quite important for the common rail, which is why today's fuel is considered poor quality for these engines. Cheers Brendan (Patrol'n)

The exact reason I don’t run a catch can on my CRD Patrol. Our engineer finds a lot of modern diesels wear out the intake valves due to the lack of lubrication when catch cans are fitted. Turning off the Egr is the go 👍🏼

Got a mate who's GQ td42 overheated and engine blew up. Spent $20000 on an engine rebuild and adding a heap more power to it. Was'nt done right and overheated and blew up again. Spent another $20000 fixing it and getting it right and the power has been wound back a bit. Seems to be going good for him now.

In saying that I had a 80 series 1hdt that needed a rebuild by the time it got 320xxx Which are suppose to be superior I have two mates with Td gq patrols one died at 290x due to the radiator cap release was too high (wrong cap) and pressure burst out everywhere else Another mates 570xxx 3rd head still ticking well

If she blew a head gasket that’s a fail unfortunately. I’ve owned both "stock" the 3 litre is best by a mile over 4.2 in stock form. But the 4.2 petrol ( square bore) or 4.5 leaves em both for dead for reliability and that’s all that counts in the bush. My 89 gq has 1 million 200 thousand k,s original motor radiator and I still own it won’t get that out of the diesel without a new $4000 pump. Has done all the major tracks including being stuck half way access the Jardine river never stopped.

i worked for a country nissan dealer we sold 75 new zd30 patrols of these 13 had to have new motors 32 had to have new injection pumps and 16 had to have new cylinder heads and 11 needed new intercoolers all under warranty some of them had all 3 motor, pump and intercooler all of them from early models and most failed before 100,000 k later models appear to be better , i was responsible for all warranty paperwork and nissan never hesitated in covering all warranty jobs on them except those that were clearly abused

I bought a ZD30 2002 a few months ago, was running well then just wouldn't start. Looks like it's the fuel pump and that is buried in the engine. Thing I'm not liking about fixing the pump is something else had to come off before you can get to the thing you need to work on. I've got 1 bolt on the pump bracket left to get off. Wish me luck for tomorrow please!

But I can't get the pump out because the engine mount is in the way. Can't tilt the pump up so it misses the mount because the disk on the front won't go through the hole. Can't get that disk off either. Anybody have any suggestions apart from taking the engine out?

3 clutches at just over 300K km did you always replace them with OEM clutches and flywheels? 100 K km clutch life seems very low especially when they are so expensive to replace. Our 2015 GU needs a new clutch at 105 K km we are going with OEM and DMF hope it lasts longer this time, otherwise the last of the y61s are a really nice car.

Gday mate. I’m currently on my 3rd clutch now with over 400000ks on the clock. I have replaced the clutch with what came out as standard. I think it’s a single mass clutch and fly wheel I’m getting around the 150000k mark out of my clutches. So, I’m probably getting close again for a replacement. Cheers Tim.

We went Exedy OEM clutch and DMF after much hesitation as there is so much talk out there with DMFs failing early but I like the idea of more elasticity in the gears that the DMF provides and don't want the vibration issues of the SMF hoping for higher kms this time. 2 years ago i made the mistake of putting 81lts of unleaded 61 in my 2003 30lt patrol while towing a 23' caravan and drove it 160k before i took it into a mechanic in Airley Beach thinking i had dirty fuel ! he drained it out put a new filter on and charged me $170 ! it hasn't missed a beat since , 260000 on the clock full service on time every time ..

Re racing: An australian performance company made 350rwhp out of a ZD30 with factory intrrnals and races it offroad. The ZD is objectively the stronger motor and the modern technology in them allows for better fuel economy. Its cneaper cheaper to upgrade them as less needs to be done to a healthy motor to make big power.

Had a 2010 3ltr pk 4 cylinder ranger had 260,000klm it blew the injector tip apart so I don't think the zd30ddti r that bad if u service them regularly.
