I was fortunate enough to visit Nissan's heritage museum in Zama a few years ago and there was one of these there in amongst a gaggle of other Silvias and Violets. The styling of this era of Nissans was just sublime.

In my younger days, I found this contemporary Japanese styling quite alien, but now I feel I understand and appreciate it more. Some vehicles are very artistic and characterful.

Yes, me too - Japanese cars never really appealed to me when I was much younger - I always found their designs awkward when compared with European (and especially Italian) designs. But now that most modern cars are either bland as porridge, or plain fugley, I’ve started to appreciate 70s Japanese car designs much more.......this one is a thing of beauty!

I owned one! I was stunned when I saw this video come up. I bought one of these, a 1977 Silver Datsun in 1994 for $500. In Canada these were branded as the 200SX, but identical in most respects other than door based side mirrors and ugly 5 mph crash bumpers. Mine was my second car and my first real car. It had the L20B 2.0 L 4 cylinder and a 5 speed manual transmission. Despite being weird, it was quite reliable and rugged and proved its worth getting on back roads and logging roads. Fantastic video, brought back a lot of memories. Sad that a real road test was not possible.

I think this was the first Datsun badged as a 200sx in the USA. Horribly ugly with DOT spec bumpers but lovely in its original form. I haven’t seen one since I was a child. Thanks for sharing it Matt.

Wow, that is a beautiful car! The exterior is great but the interior is superb! I wish car interiors still came colour coded like this. I had a Citroën BX with brown everything, but anything newer than that is basically all black (or gray), save for the seat covering materials. And what a lovely shade of green the interior is, proper 70s stuff! Absolutely fantastic, thanks for sharing this with us!

No one would mistake this car for anything else in the road. Completely unique styling. For mid to late 70s it actually handled very well. It was a slow car that was fun to drive fast. Wasn’t as good as the Toyota Celica but was an OK alternative. Fuel efficient alternative to most other cars of the era.

My first car was a 1975 Toyota Celica and this is clearly Nissan’s answer to that. We had quite a few different Datsuns in Australia in the mid 70s but the Silvia wasn’t one of them. I’d say this is based on the platform of the car known as the 180B here in Australia but that had an independent rear end so it must be older than that. Fascinating car. Great video.

He mentioned the B210 which we knew as the 120Y and the overall shape is certainly reminiscent of that. The first 'Silvia' we got was the S12, but it was badged Gazelle and was seen as an underpowered hairdresser's car at the time. One of the headlines, in either Wheels or Motor (cannot remember which) was 'Lame Gazelle". Ouch.

@@SirOsisofLiver It is so very rare to see these Datsun models survive because they were somewhat disposable. I remember Consumer Reports complaining about the 5 speed gearbox, that 1st was below reverse, which I believe it wasn't standard. Most Japanese cars were made so flimsy, rusted so easily, that they were simply junked.

That looks like it was designed as a very pretty, but larger, car initially, then the design has been nipped down in width, wheels shrunk to suit the parts bin components, etc., etc. To me that leaves it as an interesting design that’s maybe 85% as good as the designer(s) originally intended. Still cool though. 😎

These were plentiful in North America when I was of a certain (ink still wet on my first driving licence) age. I have driven one. The best I can say about the dynamics is that they were not memorable. But coming from an era where innovation had lapsed behind regulation, they were relatively quick, sporty and dead reliable. The second (1980?-84) generation was quicker, but more conventional-looking.

7:56 EXH Temp is indeed the exhaust temperature warning lamp. A compulsory item for all cat fitted cars in Japan. By the way, the cat became compulsory in 1975 over there so this car being a 1976 would be subject to having a cat. 10:14 That's the service specification label, this one saying replace engine oil every 5,000km (3000 miles) and gear oil every 40,000km (25,000miles), brake fluid every year only with Nissan NR3 spec fluid which is basically a DOT3.

Japanese cars of the 1970s most certainly have a very distinctive charm. The thing is, they made so many different models for generally short periods of time, it's easy to forget many of them. The uniqueness of this silvia then somehow gets lost until the moment you see one again. I'd say its styling is a cross between that very odd-looking (but also highly interesting) cherry coupé and the iconic Z-models.
